I just got a little single shot rifle that is chambered in 45 Auto Rim, but will also shoot the 45 acp with no alteration to the gun.

This gun is "quiet" when compared to most high powered rifles, and out to 75 yards, it's accuracy is as good as or better than anything else out there!

You're in good company -- C.E. 'Ed' Harris has been following this notion via the levergun route for decades. There was an American Rifleman piece on his converted Marlin Trapper in .45 ACP back in July 1983. More recently he's been publishing commentaries at Grant Cunningham's website:

An aside: I'm also an AutoRim fan, ever since I started acquiring shaved-cylinder Webley revolvers. Since these old revolvers require downloading from .45 ACP specs, I use AutoRim brass with them exclusively to prevent mix-ups with full-power loads for my Glock and 1911.

Recently I bought a Pietta .44 Remington Percussion revolver with a .45 ACP centerfire conversion cylinder. I put together a gizmo to counterbore the chambers of this cylinder to take AutoRim brass, so I could shoot it with the same light Trail Boss loads. Shoots far better groups than such a jury rig has any right to.

While there's not a damn thing wrong with that gun as it stands... It'd sure be a pretty little unit with a walnut buttstock and optics/rings turned down a little.

If I have to go to a proper range for serious test-firing for accuracy - after I get done with the *work* part of the trip, I always fire at least two clips through my favorite Garand. I do this to always leave on a relaxed and personally gratifying note after dealing with the *must-shoots*.
Your little package there would be an interesting alternative as a palate cleanser too. 6-12 rounds through that would be quite nice. Think I'd HAVE to pop for a suppressor too. You know.... JIC.

"Say, uh - Carpman.... What'd-ya use that thing for?"

"About 75 yards!"

Todd.

Man, but I dig your plan! Tinkering fun is sometimes the best fun. I'm fully shed of any of my auto-rim dependent guns but that dedicated load idea is the bee's knees should I ever find myself there again and THEN, to convert one of my percussions too? Hell yes.

You should blow this popsicle stand and start a whole other thread on this project of yours including the links and background.

Nice read Dave, thank you for posting the link.

It's been a long time since I have had this much fun with a rifle. I can shoot regular ball ammo that I can get from most any Wal-Mart or sporting goods store, or I can load "specific purpose" loads in the 45 Auto Rim case and have even more fun with that.
And, you can go full psycho-load and mock those *indestructible* Blackhawk fanatics too.:neener:

Counting myself and my wife, plus half a dozen other people at our local shooting range, after a quick load development, and I'm talking less than 30 rounds here, the average 3-shot groups at 50 yards is around 1/4" with several 1/8" groups and except for two called flyers, the largest 3-shot group from this gun has been just under 1/2" with the guns favorite loads.

The most accurate bullets tested in this gun are Hornady's 230 gr. XTP and Speer's 250 gr. Deep Curl.

With neighbors closer than 100 yards on three sides of my property, I wanted something accurate enough to shoot a deer in the head, and my longest shot will be around 75 yards, with the average shot being 32 yards from deer feeder to deer stand. So far, three dead deer from 3 different people, with all three deer being shot in the head.

This gun is less than 3 weeks old, and has already been shot exactly 320 times.

I don't want or need a suppressor, as none of my neighbors heard any of the three shots when the 3 deer were killed!

I figure the more rings, the more rock solid the scope will be mounted to the barrel, especially since the scope sits directly over the chamber, and the jarring the scope takes every time the action is slammed shut.

The 45 Super has a higher pressure limit of 28,000 psi, and if you use the correct brass that is head stamped 45 Super, then yes, it would be safe in this gun, once properly throated.

Cool little Handi Rifle. I take it it's a stub build? Looks great. Quiet is good but you must also be able to get 1000 fps with that receiver and barrel.

I have a 20" full stock 454 Casull that I built off a Classic Carbine. Not quiet, but fun and a heavy hitter.

I think it sounds fun. I would prefer a short bolt rifle to a single shot. Not sure of what specific purpose I'd have, but I took a .458 Winchester on a 1903 action in trade and it's neat. Loosens fillings, but I like it. In .45 ACP (easier in a bolt than the Auto Rim) it would be quick and rather painless.

Seen quite a few 45 acp and 45 Supers built around Savage actions, and from such a "small" cartridge, their performance was quite impressive

4 scope rings instead of the usual 2 scope rings? It must need the extra two rings because it "kicks like a mule"????

LOL! Cool gun! I like the short heavy barrel look!

This sucker kicks worse than a 700 Nitro Express with 1,200 gr. bullets running above maximum operating pressure levels!!!

The only reason it doesn't have 6 or more rings on it, is because there is not enough room for them!
