well, that rule went out the window yesterday.

this thing must have had a magnet attached as i didn't even look at the rifles and other handguns in the prescott valley (arizona) gun store. i went right to the "22rf" case and saw this mkII target. i knew i was in danger of breaking the rule when i asked the gentleman behind the counter if i could see this gun. after a glance at the barrel breech (looking for a firing pin ding) i caved and broke the rule. 300 out-the-door, who could resist.

my excuse: i sold my mkIII to my brother. i am giving my mkI to my grandson. so, before yesterday i had no mk rugers to call my own. and finally, i have not purchased a firearm in over two years.

i'm going to shoot it today after the weather warms up (it is 20 degrees outside right now).

anyway, i thought i'd brag about my new acquisition.

I saw a really nice mk1 with a tapered barrel for cheap a couple weeks ago but I was able to remain strong. I have a mk3 comp. Target, I like it a lot. Had a mk3 22/45 I liked a lot too, regret selling it.
 
I bought one about three years ago for that, to go alongside the Mk-II Standard I've had since 1987.

Saw one the other day (near the Beretta Jetfire I posted about yesterday) just like it marked $250. It's amazing what's been happening to gun prices lately. They're solid guns.
 
weeeell, I took it to the range and shot it this afternoon. i'm very familiar with the mk series grip/trigger, so hitting well is not too difficult (even with the pot of coffee I had this morning).

that automatch group is ten shots, 3 inches high and 2.5 inches wide. not bad if I was shooting offhand, but not great off a rest.

while I was shooting the groups I noticed the barrel was moving on the frame (a lot). so, when I got home I took the gun apart and found out a prior owner had ground down the front of the frame:

i'm a bit disappointed, but I plan on trying to shore up the ground down frame and make the barrel/frame joint tight again. I thought about calling ruger and seeing if they had any mkII frames, but this series has not been made in a while. i'm thinking of building up the frame with jbweld until the joint is tight enough. any other ideas are welcome.

at least everything else worked right.

Sorry to hear about your frame/barrel issue. Maybe a gunsmith could weld up that spot on the frame then file it down til there's no more movement between those two parts.
 
Yeah, sorry to hear it. I have one identical to Bannockburn's except the barrel is also stainless.

I love that thing. When you get fixed up you'll have plenty of fun.
I have a pile of clips so that my range time is spent actually shooting, but that means a lot of $ in clips. To me its worth it. I'd rather load in the recliner while watching the tube.

I think they're out. I think I got the last stainless one, and that was a couple years ago. I recall a guy a few years back talking about making mkii lowers for the build it yourself crowd, but that went nowhere. :( pity too, I would have been in for one.
 
:) Did you get that at Prescott Valley Guns, near Navajo Blvd.? I've gotten some good deals there. Your mention of the "22rf case" makes me suspect that was the store. There are plenty of gun shops here in Prescott, but I usually drive over to PV first when I want to do some firearm shopping. That's where I got a '57 Chiefs for 300 and a 6" 19-3 for 450, among others.

That .22 case always catches my attention for a few minutes, but I've managed to resist so far. The closest I came to buying one was when they had an Erma Luger .22 for a while.

Can't go wrong with a Ruger Target! Good score!

Why would someone do that? I love Rugers, but have never owned one of the .22 pistols. Just curious what someone might think he would accomplish by grinding down the frame.

Might be easier to make a bushing for the upper to take up the slack, though it may look a bit funny afterwards. Just a thought. Good luck.

yup, that's the one. they get a lot of my business: my lcp II, glock 19 and 30, super Blackhawk, 3-screw single six. this purchase will turn out to be a good one also.

I think it is to make the gun easier to reassemble. the correct way to reassemble that gun is to pound the muzzle end of the barrel when installing it on the frame. this gun doesn't need a hammer to pound with, it needs a pair of vise grips to keep the barrel and frame together when completing the rest of the assembly.

actually, I did that this morning before I looked at all these great responses.

hopefully, you get the prize for best, easiest and cheapest solution. i'm taking it out today and shooting another target. we'll see

the "tools" picture is to show: what I used for the shim (two layers of pop can shim (.008" total thickness)), pin punch because the rear sight pivot pin came out during shooting yesterday, blue Loctite because the front sight hold-down screw came loose during shooting yesterday, inertia hammer to smack the, now tight, barrel onto the frame and a small screw driver set to tighten the little set screw in the rear sight that also came loose during shooting.

so, how did I do so far? think this stands a chance of working? I plan to cut a new shim if this works. that shim in the gun is one I found lying around my gun cleaning station.

p.s. what is that little set screw, on the rear sight, for anyway?

I bought a few guns there, as well as the other store in PV that has the indoor gun range. It's called Insight Firearms now, but it was something different when I lived there last in 2012.

I went to Google maps to find the other gun store and couldn't believe all of the new construction in that area since I left. Traffic must be crazy now! Heck, it used to take me nearly 15 minutes to get from my house on Stetson Dr to Home Depot, and you were guaranteed to see at least a couple of instances of road rage on the way.

Don't miss it.

I think all of california is moving to phoenix and prescott/prescott valley. insight is all tactical. the old guy that had it before stocked a lot of great used firearms. I liked the old store much better.

I fired another group with the shim in place. group size is actually bigger. guess I may have to shoot this gun loose!

either way, i'm going to have to practice a bit before the groups start shrinking. at least the poi is consistent.
