Took my granddaughter shooting the other day. She is 30yrs old but about 5' tall, quite petite. I had a number of handguns that day she was shooting from .22lr to my .44 mag. I was a bit reluctant to let her shoot the .44, but she has shot some, mostly 9mm pistols with her ex-husband. I had two loads of .44 with me, one a powder puff level load and the other pretty much max load. I let her shoot a cylinder of the low powered loads and she had no problems. Held the revolver solidly and she handled the recoil quite well. I loaded up the gun with the heavy loads and warned her to concentrate on her hold and keep her elbows straight. She fired the 6 rounds and did really well. She wasn't intimidated at all by the recoil or report of the shot. Her accuracy was quite good considering she hasn't done a lot of shooting. Maybe she can give the girly-men a bit of instruction. Proud grandpa!

It's great getting your granddaughter shooting. I'm not surprised that she handled the 44 mags. Two of the young women my wife and I have taught qualified as petite. (They made me feel like King Kong with Fay Wray.) One fell in love with a GP100 357 with heavy loads. The other one preferred strong 44 specials. This was a long time ago, about the time I gave up predicting what small adult females will do. :D

Have to ask what kind of 44mag? Big heavy guns like the Blackhawk roll in the hand and a Redhawks weight helps tame recoil as well.
Not so much with a 629 Smith.

You never forget your first........44 Magnum!

Well, she did better than I did. I was 13, it was a muddy field, and the loads were HOT. I lost my footing and fell on my tookas. Got mud on everything- except the gun. :D

Nice job Grandpa, glad she liked it. If she can handle a .44 Mag., she can probably handle anything life throws at her. Its as much an exercise in mental fortitude as physical dexterity.

Thank you George for showing the internet ninjas that women are capable of shooting a lot more gun than a .38 snub nose, which, by the way, is probably the single worst gun you could ever start someone off with. Your description of your granddaughter reminded me of a "little woman" I used to know quite well. At most, she was 5' tall and weighed maybe 90 pounds. There was not a gun on the planet that she could not shoot. And shoot very well she did.

I can understand why you would be proud of her. I would be too...

My daughter is a recoil junkie, she didn't even start to smile till she shot a .357. She lite up with my 1911 .45 and has made me promise that she gets the .44 when I die.

OH, is that what you call what a .44 Blackhawk does,"roll in the hand" ?

Great Story. Back in the late 70's I was dating a very petite girl about 5' and maybe 100 lbs. Wanted me to take her shooting which I was glad to do. You know the drill. Great chance for the man to show off in front of his lady. I let her shoot some .38's in my .357 Magnum she did surprisingly well. After I shot a few cylinders of full bore magnums mainly to stoke my ego, she asked if she could shoot some of the magnums. I figured one shot would cure that. The little darling shot the full cylinder and when we checked the targets, she had shot a much better group than I had. Now that she had snatched my ego out of my body and stomped it and ground it out like a cigarette butt, I had to see some more. After out shooting me the 2nd time, I had to ask where she learned to shoot like that. Her grandpa was a retired gunny and she had been shooting handguns since she was about 10 years old. She even had her own 1911!! We never went shooting again as she soon dumped me. Always wondered if it was because I couldn't shoot up to her standards.

Good for her....and good for you for passing it on. Women are the fastest growing segment of the shooting/hunting sports. Much of this has to with males accepting them and them being properly introduced. My DIL(who is 105#s soaking wet) and both my grandaughters(ages 10 and 12) shoot my .44s and .460. Proper technique and the correct platform help a lot with recoil.

When asked what he shoots in the police competition, he replies "light specials."

Ruger Super Redhawk, 8 inch barrel, 300 grain full house bear loads. I "manned up" and fired two cylinder's worth. No more. I'll stick to .44 Spl, .45 Colt, and .357 Magnum

"Now that she had snatched my ego out of my body and stomped it and ground it out like a cigarette butt,..."

That is the best blasted thing I've seen all day.
