The M1 Garand: The Greatest Rifle of All Time

In the 1930's, and as a total package....looking at the entire thing in one setting.....ok.

There are a great deal of things we can go back and look at and say about the garand....that was really stupid.

The M1 is a good gun, for the most part, as long as you understand what it is and how it works, and you have clips and the proper ammo. There are things about it that can be pretty scary too.

Its pretty obvious, the video was meant to incite and annoy, and I suppose an attempt at humor. The sorry thing is, there are a lot of people who seem to think things like the M1 are current and a viable tool today.

Will they work, sure, to a point. Are there better things available? Absolutely. And that started with the very next rifle accepted for service use. As short lived as that was. What I find funny is, the one thats been in service longest, as the issue rifle, is the one most bitched about. I guess the government really does hate us. :D
 
The Mauser M98 pattern is still produced to this day, and is the top pick for high-end custom rifles...

An uninterrupted production run covering three different centuries, totaling in the tens of millions for the different variants, I'd say it's hard to beat...

De gustibus non est disputandum. Don Alejo held off a large force of hostile drug gangers with the sporting rifles legal in Mexico. The gang bangers had to use RPGs to stop him. Had he had an M1 the result would have been the same with "perhaps" a better kill ratio. Had Custer's men been armed with Garands he still would have had his eardrums pierced at the end of the day by the women. A certain unnamed idiot that shall remain my brother can make impossible shots with a "Glenfield" 30-30 and in a "social situation" would make a good accounting for himself with it although I pray to all the Saints that forever remains theory. The greatest battle implement does not now and never will exist. The true greatest weapon of war is the few cubic millimeters inside the combatant's skull. Good equipment will never outweigh bad judgment.

I have a '43 Springfield that was a Korean lender that had been brought back, when I'm not sure. In 2003 I bought it off a work friend for a good price. The barrel was so worn out at the muzzle from the use of steel cleaning rods it was completely smooth bore for the first inch. The best groups at 50 yards would just stay on a paper dinner plate, seriously. Also the bolt would not release when a clip was loaded, but would if you pulled back on the charging handle and let go.

Sent it to Fulton Armory and they installed a brand new mil-spec barrel, fixed the bolt release problem, and the rifle would group 3-4" at 100 yards with iron sights and 70's era Korean surplus. I was very happy with that.

I also have an M1917 Eddystone that was rebarreled during WWII with a Johnson Automatics two groove barrel. Really nice rifle, grabbed it for a hundred dollar bill at a 1992 gun auction. I believe once it was rebarreled it was stored as war reserve and never fired because that barrel looked every bit of brand new on the interior. I wish it could tell its story.

But as others have mentioned, each era brings a different "best ever". The M1 certainly filled the bill during its time.
 
You guys even watch the video? It’s hilarious. Lucky gunner makes some of the best content on YouTube and these occasional “throwback” 1980’s videos are gems. You guys need to rent a sense of humor. ;)


And yes, the M1 Garand IS the coolest rifle ever. *runs for the hills* :D
 
I ran into an offensive jerk in a book store about 25 years ago who was the real life model of this bit of video satire, so I definitely get the joke.

When opinions pro and con about the M1 Garand are totaled up, I side with Karl Karsada and Ian McCollum: they stated that the M1 Garand is obsolescent but not obsolete as a military weapon today. And for me, as a fun centerfire shooter, it has no peer.

Well give me some credit, I have been pretty laid back about the Curse of Stoner of late. I just can not sit without responding to some of the AR Worshipper's stuff and not bang on my key board. I only come out when poked!
