Who likes finger grooves on their Pistols and Rifles pistol grips?

I've never liked them but it could be because I have very small hands and rather than have the grooves spacing apart single digits I have multiple digits between the grooves which can be uncomfortable. I feel my fingers get pinched by the grooves. I do not like them on my AR rifles for sure and have gone to BCM straight grips which are a lot more comfortable.

I wonder if many people with smaller hands do not like finger grooves while those with larger hands do?

I just bought a Smith and Wesson 629 Mountain Gun in .44 mag which will have some pretty stout recoil.

I want to order some new Hogue Tamer grips for it but am debating whether to get standard with finger grooves or non-finger grooves, which one would be better to reduce recoil?

Finger grooves may help retain greater control of the pistol, if they fit you well. I have larger hands, or at least wider, I don’t like them either. They seem like they should fit but are usually too widely spaced.

A nice G-10 sharp as diamonds or a soft rubber is what I prefer, sans finger impediments. I like back and front strap checking. The back strap texture seems to help the most for me.

Thankfully, I wear 9" gloves. This puts me in the middle of the chart. If a gun doesn't fit, it's only slightly too big or small.
I like grooved grips if they are rubber. I shot a S&W 44 mag with wood finger grooved grips. It tried tearing my fingers off.
All my double action revolvers have Pachmyer grips. Single actions need to be slick.

I do, when they're sized right.
They so rarely are. They seem to rarely fit even average hands, and it's not really something that can be made one-size-fits-all because that means it actually fits 5%.

It's like the raging debate among the Glock crowd. I liked the finger grooves on the Gen 4 pistols. But my Gen 5 without feels great, too. I have larger hands, and never had an issue with any finger grooved pistol.

The Gen 4 is the only Glock that made me go (I could own this). I quickly finished shooting the mag and handed it back to the owner, went home and put my nose in the corner...

For a DA/SA big bore they're not terrible but on a SA it's better for me if the grip can roll some. For a semi auto it's gimmicky to me, that said, my glocks have finger grooves and I deal with it. I have large hands - long fingers but they're not too meaty.

My sentiments as well, the only one I own with them is a Ruger P85 with the Hogue wrap around finger grips, it feels like it wants to squirt out of my hand without them.

For the most part I don't care for them.....unless its for a short gripped concealed carry, adds more control in the hand. Even then, one protrusion between fingers is enough.

Depends upon the grip and the gun as they interface with me.

Some, are the worst thing to happen to handguns since any French-particular caliber. Others, the best thing that week.

Can't think of a rifle I've ever appreciated them on. I used to switch my M16A2 and 203 grip and butt for earlier versions when I'd draw them. Never did like an A-2 grip or buttplate.

I don't feel mine *reduce recoil* so much as aid in control when they are just right. Others, NOT just right actually make things worse for me.

My perfect (currently) 629 grip would be a morphing of the pronounced finger-grooves and side profile of these -5 grips (top) and the backstrap cover of the -6 pistol.

If they're part of the gun, e.g. Glocks, no big deal. But if I can buy grips without finger grooves, I do.

I love them. Mine happen to fit well. If they don’t however fit perfectly, I’d probably hate them.

I'm a sucker for Ahrend's finger-groove combat grips in coco bolo for K and L frames, for sure. Have a Hogue rubber pistol grip with grooves on an AR that I kinda like, but the only rubber finger-groove grips I like are the original Pachmayr's for revolvers (never, never, ever rubber grips on a 1911!).

I have Smaller hands also. I bought the Pacmyr rubber grips w/fg for my SBH I love the added control, wont shoot with out them. BUT THEY ARE BUTT UGLY. So I put the pretty ones back on when I get home from the range.

I like rubber grips with finger grooves, I.e. Hogue or Pacmyre. I add them to most of my pistols. I wear a 2xl glove. The extra girth the after market grips add gives me a more solid hold and the finger groves put more grip in contact with my fingers giving me better control.

A lot of my friends with average size hands don't like the big grips on my pistols and have a hard time shooting them well.

Never cared for finger grooves on any gun that I have. Probably because the finger grooves didn't match up with my small hands very well. The one exception I have to the no finger grooves rule is the pair of Pachmayr Gripper stocks I have on my S&W Model 686. Spacing on the grooves is pretty decent although I did file and sand them down a bit for a more comfortable fit.

Did that happen to be the grips on your first DA revolver?
I've found the first systems I learned on seem to be natural to be.
That's why I like rubber grips on DA. Everything else seems weird on them.

I have 2XL hands (glove size) and I like some grips with finger grooves and others I do not.
Example:
Glock 17/34 Gen 3 finger grooves - like em.
Glock 19 Gen 3 finger grooves - hate em, too restrictive. Too small. Sold gun.
S&W 327 NG factory “Uncle Mikes” (pretty sure they’re Uncle Mikes) - I love em.

I bring up the 327 NG because they have finger grooves. The grip looks very similar to the Hogue Tamer grip in regards to the size and spacing of the finger grooves. If you have smaller hands you may not like way the grooves are placed.

One thing I have noticed about the “Tamer” grips (I don’t think Hogue actually calls them that now) is that they offer a model that covers the back of the frame (very first N frame grip) and then a little lower on the page they offer the open back “Tamer” grip. This is on the “Round Butt” page for N frame revolvers. I am assuming yours is a round butt frame.

I didn’t see the grip with the closed back in a smooth (finger groove-less) configuration. That closed back would go a long way in helping with recoil.

Thanks, correct. I actually sent an email to Hogue yesterday asking about the smooth grip you are talking about.
