Just an idea I am toying around with for my Single Seven. Would a .32 cal round ball over light charge of Trail Boss in a 32sw or swlong case be an alright plinker( and maybe squirrel or bunny load). I have a couple people that I would like to get shooting, but are scared of the recoil and noise.

Should work just fine, load a 100% fill with Trail Boss, no compression, just to the base of the bullet or a hair under. It will definitely be light.

I use WST, AA#2 or N-310, but TB will work just fine. I have a small Taurus .32 Mag I use with light WC loads for new shooters to start off easy.

The small gun is not intimidating, the recoil is very light, the trigger is easy, accuracy is good, almost always a win win.

I have four 327 Federal Magnum revolvers. I have been buying S&W shorts to shoot through them and just bought a set of 32acp dies to load these short cases. I've never used round ball to load pistol cases, i will be buying some regular 32 lead caat bullets for loading my 32 Shorts.

I have shot some stupid low power 32s in my .327 just to use them up and get rid of them. There’s a point where even with a 2” barrel you begin wondering about squibs. Personally, I don’t go weaker than 32swl for my .327, and if I get an itch to shoot bunny farts again it will be through the 30-1 since it has a shorter chamber and allows a lot less blow-by. Something ain’t right when you watch your bullet fly to the target.

I load 327 cases with AA#2 or Trail Boss for lowest-power plinkers (with coated or plated lead bullets). I’m very pleased with the results. I’d love to try Vihtavuori’s Tin Star powder for this, but it’s hard to come by here and there’s zero load data for this cartridge.

I currently use MB Cowboy #18 and am quite happy with them for the price. I also use TrailBoss. I am curious about the accuracy of the round balls compared to a regular bullet. The MB cost is $31 for 500 w/o shipping and it looks as buying round balls is not much better. Just saying. I do not cast for this caliber yet and only have a 30 cal round ball mold.

Trail Boss is probably fine for this application, but you'll likely get better accuracy and certainly more economical shooting out of conventional fast powders. Trail Boss shines in situations where you need to fill up a big case without generating big power. A .32 S&W case, whether long or short, is not a voluminous case.

I’ve tried the .31” RB in the .327.
Doesn’t do what you’re wanting.
Accuracy is poor, nonexistent with any powder charge under it. The RB powered by just the primer won’t penetrate a corregated plastic board at 10ft. Point of impact is far below point of aim.

What does work well is a a 78gr RN OVER 1.6-2.5gr of Bullseye in either a .32acp ot .32S&W case (1.6gr); or 2.0 in .32acp; 2.2 in a .32S&WL, or 2.5gr in a .32H&R or .327 Federal.

The load I shoot most in my .32’s is the Lee 93gr RN (6-cavity mold) powder coated and sized to .314” Over 2.2gr of Bullseye in .32SWL it’s very accurate and mild recoiling. Also very inexpensive.

The next time around I am getting the Hi Tec coated version from MB, cant see how I can loose when I do. I also had good luck with some 100 grainSWC from Hunters Supply brand. TB might be a good choice for round ball as it will keep the lead from dropping back into the casing. I had heard that RB gallery loads were not accurate in the past. That's why I asked my question.

Slow fuse; more like 575-625fps. Against a bright white target, you can see the bullets impact the target. (1.6gr Bullseye). (From 5” S&W HandEjector, 2nd Model).

2.5gr 93’s are 825-875fps. Very Accurate. My favorite load. Also, ditto the 90gr Lee TLSWC. Wish they’d make another run of 6-cavity molds.

A Single Seven is not a small gun, so if 32 SWL is too much, then you should be teaching with a 22.

I use Brazos coated or Rim Rock plain lead 78 grain round ball bullets in .32swl or .32 H&R Mag cases with Red Dot or AutoComp for a very accurate round out of my Single Seven. Have used it for training starting shooters and never had a complaint that it is too much, too loud or too anything. Inexpensive to load, too.

I would use a 32 mag or just the 327 case to avoid the blow by mentioned earlier. I have loaded the Hunter brand 76gr lead bullets in 32 mag cases with a very light charge of Bullseye and they have almost no recoil or blast. I have loaded and still have some left 32 long loads with RB for shooting out of 32 long revolvers but they weren't overly accurate. If you are trying to teach at least shoot a load that will group. Round balls are an uphill battle for any distance at all normally. Across the room gallery loads are what they are best at.
