Disposing of reloading waste

We have had the same garbage guy for 5 or 6 years. He gets a pretty good tip from us, and many of the neighbors, every year just before Christmas. He also likes home made chocolate chip cookies.
Yep. There were regulations on size and weight of household trash and there were "favored" customers that we sorta ignored the regulations. Like the old guy that on hot days in the summer put 2 cans of ice cold beer on top of the rubbish when he heard us coming.

We shouldn't be advising anyone on how to dispose since each town/city/village has its own rules.

Are there any areas where throwing primers in the trash is against the rules?
Probably, if you told anyone what’s in them. It’s cool to freak out about lead these days. They probably would freak if you told them you dumped scrap lead or old bullets in the trash.

Tie it up in a plastic WalMart bag, and put it in your neighborhood gas station trash can, next to the pumps and the window squeegee.

The brass hounds go from pit to pit scavenging all the brassvthey can find. They even pick up the 22lr, 22mag and 17hmr brass. Last summer our local recycle guy was paying ninty cents a pound for yellow brass.
A five gallon bucket of brass will weigh about fifty poundsn about ten pounds a gallon for rifle & pistol cases and they can be nickel plated.
A friend is big in to Cowboy Action Shooting and does a lot of rifle, pistol and shotgun reloading. When he takes in his scrap case he takes in a bucket of spent primers. Same price as scrap yelliw brass.
You can buy five gallon buckets of brass from the recycler, if he pays $50 for a five gallon bucket of brass you can buy it from him for $75.
One of these days I will buy a bucket or two from him and sort it all out, clwan it up and see if I can make a couple of bucks on it.
If not I will add it to my collection of brass that I have picked up and cleaned up.
The best day of picking brass at the pit for me was twenty-two pounds in a day.

I have a full three gallon bucket of range brass up in my gun room that I have to sort, deprime and wet tumble.

All of my spent primers go in a bucket, the bad cases get pinched with channel locks and go in to another bucket.

A bucket of primers will be heavier then a bucket of rifle & pistol cases because they pack in tighter then the cases. With the cases there is a lot of air space.

I will not take my brass scrap in until I get around $200 worth and I will use that money to put a gun on lay away.

I have no idea. I was just advising to check with one's appropriate (or inappropriate) authorities first. Just offhand, there is metal and carbon residue. certain state and local authorities may have special procedures. Wherever in Iowa you are is sure to be different in New York City or Los Angeles.

The trash truck driver in our area rarely gets out of the truck. I have seen him texting/reading his phone, drive up to a barrel, pull a lever, wait 30 seconds for the system to cycle, then drive to the next house. How he could possibly tell what was in the barrels is waaaay beyond me...

I just can't get over how paranoid some people are when it comes to pieces of ammunition.
The idea of the dog poop and cat litter is perfect, but I have another. Left over beef stew is a great mixer for old brass and used primers. Mine go out in mayo bottles and empty plastic creamer jugs. No trash hauler is gonna open the container and dig through old spoiled food to inspect your trash. My trash hauler will even take old tv sets and computer monitors as long as they fit in the 96 gallon trash container..
Maybe they would take a human body if it smelled bad enough. :)

That would probably work just fine.
Like I tell me boys, dont do anything that you dont want to get caught doing. I'm telling you what brother, there are cameras everywhere.
Seriously.

The trash hauler here at our placd does have a camera that cathes what is being dumped from your can. But i doubt they are looking for a few garbge pieces of ammo.
We have three can for trash, one for regular household garbage, one for recyclables and one for yard waste.
I do know some of the towns & cities are real up on putting recyclabes in the regular trash.

For you guys who recycle the spent primers, how much per pound do you get? I have a waste basket with several pounds of spent primers, I'm wondering when it's worth taking to the recycle yard.

My recycler pays the same as for yellow brass, since that's what they are. Primers are made from cartridge brass. He requests that I do keep them separate, since they're small and they have special containers for very small recyclables so they don't get spread all over their yard when being handled. Nobody wants to be picking up BB size pieces when they don't have to.......

Hope this helps.

We save our soda & beer cans for our grandson to recycle for extra cash.
The last time I was there they were paying ninty cents a pound for yellow brass.
Twenty-five cents a pound for aluminum cans.
I alway pick up bits & pieces of aluminum, copper, brass or any other types of recyleable metal for him to turn in.
He has close to $200 so far from his metal recycle adventure so far.

Scrap metal prices act much like the stock market. Prices vary up and down almost daily. I have seen yellow brass prices for scrap from $1.00 to $1.50 per lb...

Yeah back when China was bulding their olympic village white brass was in the $2.75 range and #1 copper was about a dollar more. Call your local yard they will email or fax you their prices. Mine always gripes about live primers so I put my crushed ones along with my .22 brass pulls into an old cast iron pot with a loose cover and cook them off over my turkey cooker/lead melter burner.

So... On the day you place unmentionables in the trash put some cold brews on top. Problem solved. :D

Learn something new every day. I had no idea that they were made of brass...does that hold true for the silver-toned CCI primers or just for the yellow ones like Winchester? And would every recycling place know this or do I need a reference to prove it when I try to sell them?

They should know this already and CCI primers are just plated brass.

No shotgun primers mixed in though as they are mostly steel. The cups and anvils are anyway. But they can be sold as steel scrap for around 10 cents a pound these days so save them and steel ammo cases to recycle too.

If you look at the inside of the primers you will find yellow brass. Didn't know that about shotgun primers.

A magnet is your friend when it comes to recycling. I recycle brass, aluminum and steel cases, along with primers. Rifle and Pistol primers are yellow brass, even when nickel plated, but as Frogo207 said, shotgun primers are mostly steel, except for the actual primer cup, which is brass. Again, use a magnet and it will help you separate the ferrous from non-ferrous metals.

Hope this helps.

Prrimers are either brass or nickel plated brass.
So all spent primers & all brass cases go into a
bucket that goes to a recycler.
Why give it away when you can get money for it???

The few steel cases I get, just get thrown in a garbage bag.
(not separate frrom other house hold trash)
