Anybody else notice prices going up on pistol ammo?

They no longer have to compete with Wal-Mart on pricing...
Ding-ding! We have a winner.

In all markets and for pretty much all goods, Wal-Mart's aggressive pricing, made possible by the massive volume in which they deal, has the effect of depressing prices across the board.

The good news is that this may help some of the smaller retailers stay viable.

Sam at sgammo.com warned his customers of this at least a month or two ago. I don't know how many history or economics students we have here, but ammo is probably cheaper right now than it ever has been or ever will be again...on an inflation-adjusted basis. So make hay while the sun shines.

Where are you looking? A quick check shows SGAmmo (a good seller) has the steel case stuff starting at $124/1000, aluminum at $158, and good quality brass at $164.

Yes, they have the best prices that I have found.

Ive been paying attention to 5.7x28 ammo since im sold on getting a Ruger57 when one locally pops up. I bought a box of FN 40gr rounds to start stocking up from my LGS. I know everyone has hopes it will bring the ammo price down but lately it looks like the availability of any ammo is becoming hard. Checked PSA, Buds, Bass Pro this weekend they were out of all versions online.I had checked Targetsports a few days ago and then rechecked today, all they had listed in stock was the slightly more pricey FN.

Well, that was then, and this is now. SGA and a lot of others are pretty much cleaned out of the more popular, competitively priced 9-mm. The prices aren't necessarily a lot higher, but the ammo is gone. Judging from the notes on some of the sites that indicate that they expect replenishment stock within a few days, so there is probably still some more in the warehouses at this point in time. Crazy, and it's probably, hopefully, pretty short-lived because it's a knee-jerk reaction to the coronavirus scare, but it's likely the glut of supply has been flushed through, so the days of quality brass ammo in the $160/thousand range may be gone for a while.

How many rounds do you need for the pandemic??

Even in the most extreme tinfoil hat scenario I can dream up, which is roving gangs of people doing home-invasions for supplies due to the supply chain imploding, 500 to 1000 rounds of 9mm and the same for .223 is more than enough.

A couple thousand of .22 is plenty for years of small-game hunting. 100 rounds of various hunting ammo for rifles and you are set for a very long time. I still have cases of 12ga leftover from Y2k, lol.

Some folks who blow through 500 rounds in a single range session may be screwed, however. They may have to just stop shooting so much.

Stopped by the only LGS in the area and they were wiped out of 9mm, but plenty of bullets, powder, and primers. Bought another 250 of the RMR MPR hollowpoints and 1000 small pistol primers. They were also out of all of the cheap .223, but had a few boxes of the Winchester 55grain, so bought a couple of those since I had neglected my .223 stock for the past year. Should be good to go now.

I was surprised that all of the .40 S&W was gone as well. Plenty of .22 LR. Two people at the counter buying guns. One married couple were first-time gun owners. No idea what they bought. The other guy was buying a Hellcat. Plenty of guns on the shelves.

if things play out well, the increased demand will cause an increase in supply, then in a few months demand will drop off - and the over supply that will result will cause a new level of low prices for a while, and those that buy cheap and stock deep can take advantage.

Reality, what a concept. Most of this idiotic panic buying is a distribution problem, not a supply problem. Ya think TP and ammo makers have left their factories?
Manufacturer's survival depends on adequate supply. Most retailers have regular, JIT(Just In Time) deliveries..those have been gooned up...be patient..

Count yourself lucky you can afford ammo even at an increased price. Let's have a realty check here. Jobs are being lost all over the place. Not to say that we can't discuss places with good prices, but I'm not feeling the issue.

There's lots of first time gun buyers out there, exercising their second amendment rights. Hopefully these first time gun buyers will begin to fully appreciate why we have the second amendment in the first place. As for ammo prices going up, it's inevitable as demand is probably outpacing supply. I don't mind retailers making more on their ammo, it's price gouging that upsets me.

Kinda doubt that. MANY people are buying a LOT of HGs with only a clean record and a credit card. I'm sure they know it's legal to get a gun, 'just in case', but I really doubt many appreciate what the 2nd or any of the 'amendments' really mean to them. Lots of first gun buyers right now who really know little about guns or how to use them. No training, no real knowledge=problems, IMHO. Just stand at a LGS counter and listen to some of the ? asked..pretty scary. About 3 weeks ago I did just that at Cabela's. The young lady, by herself, was essentially telling the salesguy, 'tell me what to buy'..she knew nothing about 'guns'.

Went by my LGS sold out of most common calibers. 357,9mm,40 they had to tell folks you can buy this firearm but we have no ammo for it. Glad I ordered a tonne when it was cheap and plentiful.

I agree, most of these new gun buyers are simply scared of our current situation and want to feel better about protecting themselves should the SHTF. Let's see how they feel about the 2nd Amendment when these people want to sell their guns because they have no reason to keep them. Let's see how they like the feds or their state gov officials telling them they can't sell their gun without a background check. Let's see how all this plays out. Hopefully, for those living in places like CA or NJ where gun rights are being stripped away, hopefully these new gun owners wake up.

I think this crisis will change opinions on gun ownership for decades to come...in a positive way but not for any positive reasons. If enough people are out of work for long enough, enough people will understand the need for powerful home and self defense.
