Long Range Rifle/Scope/PRS question(s)

I wet patched the rifle this AM before work (7:00AM) (Was here from 11:30 to 1:20 last night, power company had to shut us down to tighten some lugs on the main transformer. We are fed from three directions with automatic switching, but our weak link is the one transformer.)

I got next to no black on the first wet patch and no blue. I did another wet patch or two and a couple of dry ones, then bore mopped the chamber. I will look at it with the bore scope this evening. Go from there. I did peak in there with the naked eye.
 
I shot the five 6 Creed rounds at 300 yards today.

Group is about 1.373 tall by .823 wide including the one on the cardboard. I wonder if it was the 3100 FPS shot? Hmmm. Maybe just the wind, I shot three in a lull, then had to wait for another to finish, I am not sure which shot was the one up and right. I need to zero it at 100, that group was shot dialed to 1.0 Mil. It should have been more centered (vertically) on the target. The center dot on the Bushnell Forge is almost exactly the size of the black dot on the target when dialed to 27X

Avg=3074
ES=35
SD=14.3

All charges weighed on GemPro 250. Exactly (As far as the scale is capable) 43.5 Grs each.

That barrel vice, which is very nice by the way, makes reminds my of my recent experience with my 223 Remage build and swapping barrels.

A local guy had an ad in the classifieds for a 24" 1:8 Stainless Shilen barrel, chambered for 223AI, threaded for a Remington 700 action with a conventional shoulder, $90. It looked in excellent shape and because I already have a 223AI, dies, and brass, I thought I would screw it on my action and see what happens.

Headspace was perfect so I shot 3, five shot groups at 100. This was the final and best group of the bunch using 8208 and a 70 RDF

More load dev will probably tighten it up a little more.
 
I took a few quick pics with the Teslong this AM before rushing off to work. A little bit of copper at the beginning of the lands. Mostly clean though. Gonna try some Eliminator or KG-1 carbon remover on it. It had around 100/150 rounds on it since the last cleaning.

Are you weight sorting primers?
 
We never did it in Benchrest. Hall of fame benchrest shooter Allen Hall (Hall actions) told me one time if your primer goes bang, you don't have a problem. Of course that was 100/200 yards. I do believe primers need to be seated consistently. I do uniform primer pockets.

My gunsmith, who has some Utah benchrest records under his belt, said the same thing. If you are having consistency issues at 100 yards, it isn't your primer.
 
I did side by side testing of weight sorted vs. highly varying primers several years ago Aka, grouping the highests and lowests, not just the “near averages that aren’t average”. I’m not the best at shooting small groups, but I couldn’t detect a statistical difference in MV or group size. I do spend more for CCI BR2’s and 4’s, which are weight sorted, but honestly, I also couldn’t see the difference between BR2’s and WLR’s 2 years ago when I put them head to head in my 6 creed because I was running out of BR2’s and they weren’t to be found.
 
Years ago when you couldn't get Fed SR Match primers many used standard WSR primers in registered Benchrest matches (The old nickle plated ones) and many reported no difference in group sizes.
 
i get the same SDs with wolf and fed gm match. however, i cannot get those SD with tula win or cci (regular, not benchrest)

on the downside, out of every thousand rounds, i'll get 1 or 2 wolf that fail to go bang. but for what i paid for them... i can live with that
 
My objective is to cull out the extremes and perhaps I trim a tiny bit off my agg it will be worth the few minutes it takes to keep them as close to .03 gr. One or two less 8’s would be a huge difference.

I shoot a 6 mm Norma BR
These are 600 yard targets which aren’t that bad but I’m transitioning to 1000 yard BR where everything matters if you wanna stay relatively small.
Most of the top guys measure everything that is measurable and weigh everything that’s weighable etc.

so Monkey see Monkey do......

Have you guys tried any Fiocchi small rifle magnum primers? That group I shot above in the 223AI was my first try with them and they look promising.
 
Not promoting one over another just putting this out there, I suggest sampling primers side by side at the distance your discipline shoots to get you a good look as to any improvements in performance is available . I believe one primer will rise above the others.

(i haven't seen an accuracy difference in primers. i only test for consistency in terms of velocity)

I can see the benefits of testing at longer range, kind of like a ladder test, but I would be more concerned with atmospheric conditions at that point.
