What to stock up on?

A sigh of relief for business with too much stock and not enough sales...

Yeah the firearm industry was getting fat with stock...not anymore.

It's always hard to get while the gittin' is good...but if you do, when the gettin' is bad, boy, are you thankful for it.

2019 was reloading supplies as I began reloading in Jan of that year. I may be wrong, but I don't think I bought a single box of factory ammo last year.

*EDIT*

Yup...last time I ordered from SGA was Sept of 2018.

I just recently took inventory of my components, and I have plenty to last for a long time. I’ve got a couple of calibers I have not loaded yet, so I can also stay busy working up new loads - something I enjoy.

Have not been to the gun stores since this virus thing started, but one local gun store was real fat with stock last time I was there. I was worried they might be extending themselves too much, but I’m sure they are going to do well now. I’m glad, they are one of my favorite stores.

Funny how times change and how quickly supplies can dry. No TP to be had anywhere around here. No idea about primers or powder, as I have plenty for my needs.

One thing though, always seem to run out of bullets.

I stepped into a LGS yesterday. I didn't look at any guns. But they had quite the line formed at the register. Not sure if it was for ammo or guns. They are the only ones in my area that carry Western Powders. I was hoping they would have AA1680, they didn't.

I'm sitting pretty good on components. Still have a significant amount of 'store bought' ammo that I had purchased before I started to reload.

I also tend to shoot the most during the "Houston Winter" (?), and quite a bit less during summer, which isn't too far away here.

But,

I've been looking for a case of 22lr lately after I found out my stash was a few bricks lower than I thought. (My, how the lead fly's when you are having fun!!! :) )

Nothing fancy, mainly just plinkin' around with that ole stinky Aguila SE HV (Doesn't cost a lot but still seems to work pretty darn good in every 22 I own)

Been kinda hard to find lately, but Brownell's happened to have what I wanted in stock tonight.

Best to be vigilant. Keep your eyes open. Know what you want and how much you are willing to pay for it. Be prepared to act when opportunity knocks,,,

With that being said, I'm hoping this latest squeeze will be short-lived. Not holding my breath though,,,:(

Wow rmr is wiped out on 9mm. Good for their business I hope. Guess I have to wait to try out the 124's
Yup, was gonna order some myself and ran into the problem. Looks like is gonna be about a month before they get caught up!

seems like a lot of places are out of stock / back ordering 9mm and 223 bullets. Especially the reasonable priced ones. Glad I stocked up on a few K of rifle primers, need to get some more small pistol primers yet!

There were five dollars a tray at Bass Pro for Remington I took it in the shorts and bought a thousand. All the rest of the cheaper ones were gone

Yikes, I’d say that’s taking one in the pants. Most I’ve ever paid (granted I’ve only be reloading for a bit over a year) was $35/k at a local shop for cci. The rest I’ve been able to get in the $25/k range.

if you do it a little here and there over a period of time, it doesn't hurt finances very much, I keep a good inventory and just maintain it after that, so I don't get caught in these panic driven shortages. I've been coasting through them for decades.
In the 90s I wasn't even aware their was a shortage. The next two I coasted through with no problems, and I'll keep shooting through this one also, if it happens.
If this shortage becomes a real problem I will just won't shoot as much, stretch my supplies out like I've done in the past, and carry on.

I don't reload or shoot as much as many here, and I'm kind of new at is so my experience is not very much. My approach is to have a supply of factory ammo that I find adequate for me. I got most of it before I started to think about reloading. I'm learning the reloading, and can do a couple different cartridges, which I'm pretty happy about, just as a noob learning the ropes. My attitude toward shortages and supplies, is to consider what I could conceivably use or go through, and then make sure I have a good bit more than that. I don't use that much so, this really isn't a big deal for cost really, it is not a substantial amount of components, and I'll just end up reloading all the factory brass, but for whatever you're goals are, the end game is basically the same, figure out what you think you might use, and stock a reasonable surplus over this amount - that is my approach anyway. You might use those supplies/components - or at some point trade some of it, for something else you don't have that someone you know does.

Here is their 'currently in stock' list
Good to see they have quite a bit in stock.

Actually, we have been stocking up big time for over 2 years from $15-$20/500 22LR shipped thread and didn't need to buy any more during the recent "shortage" - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/22lr-for-less-than-15-20-500-shipped.853059/

I shot over 14,000 22LR rounds the past 2 years and just shot around 3000 rounds of 20 different brands for the "real world" 10/22 Collector ammo comparison thread capturing every 10/5 shot group - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...lector-3-break-in.859106/page-2#post-11351163

I started another "real world" thread with Thompson Center T/CR-22 and doing 25+ different brand ammo comparison and do not plan to slow down the shooting - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...mmo-comparison-break-in.864241/#post-11405528

When I didn't want to pay for Wolf Match, I found a nice sale on Aguila Pistol Match Competition ($19.94/500) and bought everything the store had and glad the performance is on par with CCI SV for my initial T/CR-22 testing.

After having gone through several "shortages", I have urged everyone to stock up when the prices were low and desired items in stock on a monthly basis and even to utilize tax refund check/budgeted gun related fund to buy large stocks during big sales/Black Friday sales. Thankfully, none of my relatives, friends and most neighbors needed to buy anything during the shortage due to being well stocked. Of course, if anyone has a need, I will gladly "Pay It Forward" whatever they are short of ammunition/reloading component wise.

Good luck.

Primers and popular powders are always things you want a two year supply of. They do have a very long shelf life.
It is the reason I have a couple jugs of hp 38 and jugs of Unique, HS6/h335/aa2230/imr3031/H4895. Those cover everything I have.
Brass and bullets have always been fairly easy to come by.

I've been reloading for 34 years. I'm just wondering how many more times I'm going to witness this panic buy situation in my life. It seems to happen every 5-8 yrs.,to some degree. I'm glad I stocked up and am sitting back just watching the craziness, and I'm not involved in it!

If you can, it may be best to order from RMR now with the understanding your order won't arrive for a ~month~ or so.

I (like many others, I'm sure) have good reason to believe an ever-so-slight price increase on certain items might be coming soon.

I've been reloading for 5-6-7 years or so. Started after the last 'crunch' was winding down. As a result, I have not been through anything similar to what others have experienced previously, so I can't really say what was or was not available in my area.

I've been buying in bulk for quite a while now. As a result, my inventory isn't always balanced, and what I might be a bit low on always changes. I don't have much of a choice but to try and keep on top of my inventory / purchase accordingly.

In the past few weeks I have purchased the following:

- 2000 124gr TCFP RMR bullet
I was running low for .357 Sig. I had maybe 200 left, and these are for a new load I'm now shooting regularly.

- 4lbs of Power Pistol
I thought I had a 4lb keg, but I was wrong and ran out completely of the 1 pounder I originally bought.

- 1000 CCI 500 primer
I had fewer primers than I had bullets, and this pretty much evens things out.

-
1000 pieces of Starline .357 Sig brass
I originally bought 500 pieces, but I lose between 10% and 25% every time I shoot, depending on the venue. I've probably lost nearly 200 of them by now.

My point is, I was going to buy all this anyway. I started carrying guns chambered in .357 SIG, so I shoot that cartridge more now, and I practice using my reloads.

I don't buy out of fear of scarcity. If I really have to, I'll just shoot less.

Three-year supply of the stuff you actually use.

Which can be a single box of ammo if you stop shooting.

I'll admit it, I stopped shooting altogether after Newtown...I'm pretty sure I didn't shoot once in 2013.
