So the FN AR competition has a forward rail for the mounting of an after market iron sight (see pic). I have an old rifle that the barrel was cut down on and I had to cut off the front sight to do it, how thick would you need for something like this? Screenshot_20200325-200256.png

It would have to be custom-made. This is an old WWII era POS boom stick (but I love it and it works).

I see, sorry I misread. I thought it was an AR.
A gunsmith can put a proper sight on for you for not too much money. I think the chunk of rail may look weird and set the sight pretty high.

it would have to be set pretty high because there's a rail on the back for the scope to attach to. Fine I admit it's a Mosin-Nagant that had been sporterized LOL. The rail sits up too high to be able to use the back sight and a standard size front sight side have to get a rail for the front at the same height is the back. though it might be a waste of time cuz there's not a whole lot of room on the rail for my scope and an iron sight I have to choose one or the other unless I went with like a red dot or an ACOG or something. I just use it for hunting so a fixed magnification ACOG style sight would be cool.

Didn't Redfield make scope rings that you could see iron sights through? Would that be practical for your application?

Brownells has what you want as far as commercial slip on front sights or sight ramps that are soldered on using soft solder and usually secured by a screw. Depending on how much barrel is left, you might want to consider getting Mosin carbine front sights. @Joshua M. Smith might be a good one to contact on that. Barrel blast in a shortened Mosin can be an issue so you might consider having the muzzle threaded for a muzzle brake.

But, you will need to calculate sight height for it to shoot to POA. I am assuming that the rear sights are still on, but then if not, Brownell's sells commercial replacement types too.

This is a sight height calculator from Brownells where you simply plug in your numbers https://www.brownells.com/aspx/learn/learndetail.aspx?lid=13186

Putting some AR rail type on the front sight will change the POI as it affects barrel harmonics and maybe not in a good way.
