That is just knock down beautiful.. How difficult is the trigger pull in double action mode compared to being used in Single action mode???
 
That is so cool looking. That pistol was new when the French Impressionist's were still considered outsider's by the art establishment. Eugene Haussmann had finished the rebuilding of Paris, acclaimed at the time as the most beautiful city in the world. That period and place was the height of 19th century civilization.

A lot of history has flowed through the Seine since that pistol was built.

It has an excellent, well illustrated, and very complete guide to taking a Modele 1873 apart and putting it back together. It is an exceptionally interesting gun in that regard.

(I have given the Amazon listing for this book because that was the fastest way to find it. Frankly, I have begun buying books from places other than Amazon, like Ebay, because I would rather get things by regular US mail than by Amazon's own delivery service. This is purely a matter of convenience for me. Follow your own preference in that regard.)
 
Good enough for Rick in 'The Mummy.'

All the old design double actions I have shot or handled had tough trigger pulls. I suspect that they were seldom shot DA unless the range was short and the situation desperate.

Oooh, thanks I may look into that. The company I bought my reloading kit from , H&L Publishing, has downloadable books over various pistols ... including the Mle 1873. I haven't purchased it yet, so I can't speak to its quality, but it does seem to have a full table of contents, at least! http://www.hlebooks.com/ebook/kn1873en.htm

Uh, I only have 6 loaded rounds so far, but the pouch-on-the-holster looks like it'll hold at least 18 rounds. There are three loops inside the ammo pouch, but they're really large -- they'll each hold two rounds, but if you pull one out, the other falls into the bottom of the pouch. The pouch is a modern repro, very well made -- for example, they put leather patches over the inside-ends of the brass rivets -- so my guess is the loops are "period correct" for some purpose. Here's a picture, with my thumb sort of obscuring stuff on the left.

Anyone got a guess as to why the loops are so large?

Yeah that is always a problem with reproductions.. Sometimes finding out where they copied is important.. And from what I have seen there are several variation on that Holster..

Here is a clam shell with 3 pockets.. but they are much bigger.. Looks like each pocket would hold several rounds loose??

Thanks for the French version of a trip through the Way Back Machine! Both the revolver and the leather accoutrements are outstanding!

My understanding is that the holsters were continued unchanged for the Mle 1892, and probably to the end of "anyone in the French military carrying these pistols". So there could be 60 or 70 years of variations. I've never heard of moon clips for these revolvers ... they're gate-loaders, so I don't see how that would work.
