How do these primers look?

Not my gun but someone sent this to me asking. CCI SPP, mixed 40cal brass, 165gr bullet and Hodgdon 700-x powder. Seated at 1.120 and 5gr of powder. To me it appears there is a little primer issue going on there.

Thanks guys. I figured I would ask because these are his first reloads and he decided to setup a Lee progressive and get going without help. He wont go over 5gr because he just wants plinking/blasting ammo.

Your looking at Berry's plated data. He is using FMJ which max is 5.5.

I still think he ought to cut his loads and then see how the primers turn out. It could be an over sized primer hole, and it could be more powder in the case than that particular pistol can handle.

And it could be the reloader is using scoops and not verifying the weight with a scale.

You know what I didn’t think of him using scoops. He wanted to use the one that came with the lee dies and I told him no. He says these are all hand weighed in a digital scale. When I get a free moment I’ll see what’s wrong.

It is an oversized firing pin hole, not a bad thing, just is what it is. Very common with some guns like the Beretta 92 FS. Just search firing pin hole Beretta 92 you will find a lot of pictures.

I asked him to back down to 4.8/4.9gr and up his OAL from 1.120 to 1.130 for 165gr FN. I looked at the primers in person and one has a very sharp cut on it that appears to be from the firing pin.

What you are seeing is "primer drag/swipe". Very common in striker fired pistols, S&W M&Ps/Shields included. Generally gets worse as pressure goes up.

The OPs photo is from presssure & some swipe. (Edited)

Kahr> "Primer wipe" is a teardrop-shaped firing pin impression, accompanied by a drag mark (scratch or gouge) following the "point" of the teardrop and leading away from the primer, sometimes into the brass. This is because the firing pin does not fully retract after the round has fired and the slide is traveling back during ejection, causing the case to drag across the firing pin as it is thrown clear. It is not in any way harmful, except sometimes to the case if the primer pocket edge is gouged. Kahr will tell you it is a normal condition for their pistols, even saying so in the owner's manual.

Swipe is when pressure makes the primer flow into the firing pin hole. The raised metal of the primer is shaved flat by movement of the bolt face. Swipe.jpg 1.jpg Wipe.jpg

Its not been swiped or wiped, imo.

Look at the primers in the trigger guard of the shield....they are exactly as in the OP. maxresdefault.jpg

This guy does a pretty good job of explaining. Go to the 10:15 point to see the cases from the S&W.
