On a related subject: What scope do you guys recommend? My eyes need help with my Marlin 80 DL, I have an old Weaver 4x, (Texas made), and I need something stronger and clearer. I am thinking about the Leupold rimfire scope, forget the model #. Any suggestions?

Years ago somewhere I read a bit of wisdom about scopes. Guy says “I just realized that my most expensive scopes are on the rifles I use the least”.

I was doing the same thing. I had $600 scopes on rifles I shot maybe a couple times a year, but had cheap (and I mean cheap) scopes on my slug gun I used for my main hunting, which was deer. And my .22, which I used a lot.

I think a lot of guys cheat themselves on.22’s when it comes to scopes. “it’s good enough for a .22”.

My 453 CZ has a 4-14x40 VX-3. Crystal clear. Absolute joy to shoot. I expect to shoot one hole groups at 50 yards.

....... My vote also. IMG_1659.JPG .. Although it's been mentioned already, the used .22 market seems to have a lot of good deals vs. buying new, and who shoots a 22 bolt gun enough to wear it out ? And while I have no experience with them, The Ruger American Rimfires are quite impressive from what I've seen. Lotsa good choices out there.
 
I'm a fan of the BSA Sweet .22 range of glass. They're a lot of scope for the modest price range. I like the fact the turrets are set up with BDC markings for 3 weights of .22 ammunition (although I've never used that option and doubt I ever will). Initially I was torn about mounting the full size vs. the compact version on this 10/22. In the end I went with the full size.

I'm seeing some pretty cool pieces in this thread (I especially like the old, wood-furnished ones.)

I only own three .22 caliber rifles that are not semi-automatics. I have a lever-operated, falling-block single-shot Steven 89, a version of the old Stevens "Favorite", that added a faux magazine tube. I also have a Henry H001, and a 1985-ish Marlin 25.

Oh, yeah, I do also have a Keystone Crickett around somewhere, bought a few years ago for my daughter, but the time for presentation never came up.

Dad has a sweet 17 on his 17hmr encore barrel. Funny thing is that 27 inch barrel chronos most loads 100-115 fps faster than the ammo box says. I've seen him shoot prairie dogs in the head at 400yds with it.
 
It's hard to beat an older Remington or Winchester bolt action. The Remington 581 is particularly accurate and lends itself to modifications for the future. The action is smooth and strong, actually stronger than it needs to be and the trigger can be easily modified to reduce pull weight by installing a lighter spring and adding a pin to separate the trigger return function from sear function. (I have a photo that shows just where to install it.) Regardless, the action was used for a more expensive version and/or modification. Mine has a custom barrel and stock, making it a real tack-driver. (There's a neat video on the net, showing a factory-fresh rifle.)

Regarding iron sights for beginning shooters, I implore you to make it a receiver-sighted version instead of a notched rear. Use a large aperture (doesn't darken the image) that makes it easy to shoot. Only the front sight and target need to be lined up, after looking through receiver sight. It's both more accurate and easier to use well.
 
I don't own a rifle in 22lr. Was actually planning on buying a Ruger American Rimfire next weekend.
I may have to look into some of these other options listed though

They have the American Rimfires in the ad I just got in the mail today for $269. Don't know if that's a decent price or not...

Is it illegal or against forum rules to snapshot an ad and post it here?

I've seen the standard RA rimfire 22lr for as low as $189
 
Few years ago I was all set to get a CZ-455 Full Stock model. Dealer I got my other CZ-455 from said they were having trouble getting them. I offered to put money down in advance on them ordering me one. He said they'd order it for me anyway. Then they found out that model had been discontinued and their wholesaler didn't have any either. Oh well........... And I had already downloaded a picture of it off of the CZ web site in anticipation of getting one. Awful sharp looking .22 IMHO.......

Wow. Thanks for all replies! The CZ is obviously a favorite, which shouldn't surprise me - I own more CZ pistols than any other single brand. They're great.

I didn't think of the Ruger American. I'll have to research that. I was seriously considering an RA in 6.5CM a while back, which I wound up not pursuing (scrapped the project entirely in fact). I know they've gotten good reviews.

I have to say, right now I'm leaning in the direction of less money - Savage or Ruger vs the more expensive CZ. I know, "you can always just save longer to get more to spend" and "buy once cry once" are excellent rules to live by and I often do, but I also have to contend with "can I justify that expense for this item when I also have blah blah blah I must spend money on" type questions. It is what it is, and I'm still considering.

Again - thanks for all input, I much appreciate it. Very grateful for this community!
