AR Builds -- What Parts Did You Choose and Why??

What is the objective of your build? From tacticool to accurate. Gotta know that up front. Big problem people have is that they don't have that picture in their head before they start. They end up with a cross dressing Mr. Potato Head.

Welcome to thr forum, Armednfree.
It does help to completely read a post before replying to it.
The OP did state that the thread had nothing to do with what he wants or needs. He was just looking for ideas. Also the OP started the thread back in 2013.
So just let us know what you like on your AR builds and why. Someone may find it helpful in their next build or upgrade.

Per the title... I need ideas. Please post your parts lists and explain why you chose them. Also list the approximate prices if you can remember.

This thread has nothing to do with what I want or need. Again, I just want ideas.

And in the spirit of the thread, a few updates from this week. First is a new Warne scope mount for my daughter’s Aero build holding a Bushnell Prime 1-4x scope. Love the glass for the price and the mount excellent with one caveat; that sucker is tight! You must slide the mount from the end of the 1913 rail which in my case entailed the use of a soft hammer.

Next up is the new Shockwave II pistol brace. I was very excited with the idea of an inexpensive, lightweight brace that accommodated a carbine extension and this one does not disappoint. Though not as comfortable as an SBA3 with a negligible recoil caliber it is more than useable.

That looks nice Skylerbone. I'll bet she's happy.

I made some changes to my rig too...https://photos.app.goo.gl/3aa9AiqwcHHz8pXs5

First, I added a B.A.D. lever. I've been using this for the last 1500 rounds or so and now I can't imagine being without it. Just being able to lock the bolt back with my trigger finger made it worth it, but one less movement for my off hand during reloads runs a close second.

I also added an extended mag release button. I have short, stubby fingers and it makes for more positive mag releases without altering your shooting grip.

I opted to get rid of the LPVO in favor of a red dot. I went with a Sig Romeo4T, but I had to send it in to Sig. It'll be back Tuesday, so I've had a Romeo5 and now a Romeo4M while I await my main optic.

The mounting rig I chose could be the subject of its own discussion. I first tried out a Geissele 1.93 height mount and REALLY liked it. It affords a more heads up shooting posture and is more comfortable. It's faster and allows you to move more easily with the weapon in its firing position. The way I came up with this rig is I did some math. A co-witness mount is about 1.4" off the rail. I added a .5" riser to get the height I wanted. I used a Yankee Hill scope riser. It's very sturdy. I had two reasons for going this route.

First, you can't co-witness open sights with a 1.93 mount height. The rig will allow the placement of the rear sight on the riser behind the optic and I can add a front sight using another riser. The second reason is because this will allow the use of a magnifier without the huge expense of getting the optic and the magnifier on the same plane.

The last change I made was the muzzle device. I first went with an A2 flash hider. I decided that I wanted something that did something for me. Yeah, nuts right? Anyway, I went with a Kaw Valley magnum linear comp to throw the blast down range. It did that, but bystanders told me that they didn't notice any difference in the sound level from the A2 and the Kaw Valley threw a HUGE fireball.

I then tried a Strike Industries J-Comp. This was pretty nice. It had some flash suppressing ability and held the gun flat, but it was concussive. Very concussive. I got tired of being "that guy."

I went back to the A2. I was watching a youtube video and this guy was talking about how the A2 does have some compensating qualities and suggested installing one upside down to see what would happen. I did just that and he was right. I started playing around with timing the A2. Loading one round at a time and taking note of the behavior of the gun as I rotated the A2.

Well, what can I say? I have mine timed with the very last port on the left side at about the 4 o'clock position and I'll be darned. I actually felt like I struck gold. I won't say that it shoots flat, but the recoil is more manageable and you can still shoot fast with good recoil management.

I also ordered a Ballistic Advantage 11.5 Hanson barrel with the .625 journal, I'll post after it's installed and I can comment.

The pistol, as you see it, comes in at just over 6 lbs.

not a AR15 but a Remington R 25 in 708 . first thing that went was the barrel replaced with a wilson combat 16'', trigger is JP its adjustable . bolt is JP enhanced . replaced the bolt because every primer i had tired had gotten a hole in the primers then that little slug would get stuck in the bolt . adjustable gas block ,and toped with a burris verosity 3-15 X 50 FFP

I'm in the process of putting together an AR at the moment. Just waiting for a back ordered gas block. I chose all the parts that I did because I just liked them.

I went with Wilson Combat for the upper/lower, 16" 1-8 556 barrel, flash hider, gas block & gas tube.

Geissele for the H1buffer spring(I added the extra weight to make it an H2), trigger guard, mag release & bolt catch.

Radian for the charging handle, GI safety selector & forward assist.

Sharps rifle company for the BCG, Daniel Defense 13.5" M-Lok handguard & Vltor buffer tube with a Noveske end plate & take down pins. I also used a DPMS dust cover & a Joe Bob's castle nut.

I'm using a Hogue grip & a Rogers super stock that I had in the safe.

I had the barrel Cerakoted by Kilo Delta Tactical. They're close to me & have done great work for me in the past & also get it done faster than they quote. If you're in the Tampa Bay area I highly suggest them.

*Edit I forgot to mention the LaRue 2 stage trigger. It's not the best but it's the best for the money IMO.

It begins again! This time ‘round I’ve chosen a 10.5” pistol build, beginning with a SOLGW 5.56 1:7 twist nitride barrel. Lower is also from Sons of Liberty, their “Lone Star” and once available will feature the matching upper receiver. Parts on hand include: JP adjustable gas block, Aero Precision nitride gas tube, Luth-AR bolt catch installed with a KNS retainer pin, Strike Industries Enhanced ambi-safety, and Phase 5 magazine release button.

I’m planning to order an SBA-3 brace, but have yet to decide on the remaining parts. I’ll take my time, ordering what I like when availability picks up.

My latest is on going. I’m still waiting for a couple parts. Been building ARs since well, the very beginning of the “build culture” phenomenon as I call it. 2005, right after the Billary Clinton AW Ban expired in .04, I built the first I had ever owned, and I have continued ever since. Never owned a manufacturer’s AR in fact.

I build top shelf ARs at a fraction of the price some sell for. I’ve been using AMT 80% Billet Lowers for the last couple years.

After machining & Aluma-Black to protect machined areas.

I prefer using Forged Uppers from Brass/Aluminum Forging Enterprises(Square Forge Mark) I remember in the first couple years, everyone wanted a “Keyhole” upper(Cerro Forge), LOL. This is T-marked etched & has “M4” etched above the tenon threads.

Over the years I’ve seen a decline in the quality of materials in many LPKs. So I’ve decided to piece my own kit together from now on. Every part is machined or turned from solid tool steel or Billet 7075 Aluminum. And the LPK parts are Nitrided down to the take down/pivot pin detents. The endplate & castle nut are 7075-T6 Billet Aluminum and hard Anodized. (Just as the upper & lower). Even the springs are Chrome-Silicon instead of the cheaper SS used in many LPKs now.

The BCG is my favorite. And has been my go to since 2014, around it’s release. It was designed & is made by Azimuth, although you won’t find it under their name. They wholesale to many, many manufacturers, who promptly Stamp their on brand name/logo on, claim as their own and sell for a higher price..depending on their GREED and how much they think their NAME is worth. It’s the Enhanced Nitride BCG and can be found with many names tattooed on it for between $115-$200 and even higher. With an extensive search knowledge, one can find them WITHOUT any manufactures name.

The BCG has specific contact points & eliminates “Bolt Tilt”.

This Gas Block is another of my “Go To” parts. For several years and several builds, I’ve use these. Adjustable, clamp on design. Made of steel & Nitride QPQ treated. Also a matching Nitride SS gas tube.

The charging handle is another trick. Yes, many cheap CHINESIUM copies are made, usually from 6061 Aluminum. This is NOT one of those. It uses the same forged 7075, but doesn’t have a name stamped on it..OR the $80 price tag. Because it’s made here in the USA at the SAME Foundry Forge as the $80 one. Most people either don’t know, or will refuse to believe that point. Which is fine.

The recoil spring is something new for me. Had a coupon for it figured what the hey. It’s basically the same price as my current setup the past many years...heavy spring/Spikes T2 buffer. This is from Armaspec and has the same H2 weight. But it’s a “silent” design as the spring is smaller diameter & doesn’t rub on the inside of the buffer tube causing the annoying “SPROYNG!” sound we all know. I am impressed with build quality. A stock carbine spring in comparison on top.
3102-B4-B0-B77-C-413-E-A96-F-3-E9578-F601-FC.jpg

Upper/Lower assembled together. Great fit with ZERO slop. The high quality is evident. Pins slide with ease, high quality springs& surfaces of ultra hard Nitride. Even the safety/selector “SNAPS” into position with authority. This is the difference little parts can make. The stock...another of my “Go To’s”. It’s an Ergo F93. These were actually the predecessor to the Magpul UBR adjustable stock. It’s not the lightest, but is tough as they come, presents absolutely NO slop in any position....and it just looks MEAN!

I received the barrel the other day. I’ve been a fan of Ballistic Advantage for many years and was planning on using their 16” Modern series. A standard Socom profile(Givernment), mid gas system, 5.56 chamber & 1:7 twist. I’ve wanted to try one of their Premiums with Wylde Chamber & 1:8 twist. I’ve actually had an idea of a barrel in my head for maybe two years. A 16” Middleweight contour using midlength gas system, 223 Wylde chamber & 1:8twist. Whether 4150CV or 416R I’m not partial to, although being Nitride QPQ treated is a prerequisite of mine in all barrel since 2014. BA has a barrel close to this except it’s bare 416R SS. 416R will undoubtably make for the most accurate barrels one can use. However, it’s not king of longevity. Enter the Ballistic Advantage Premium Black series. All of the aforementioned, but with a Nitride QPQ treatment. BA calls the contour “Tactical Government“, but it’s a middleweight. At 32oz, it’s still not obnoxiously heavy, but provides extra weight in key areas to battle the effects of heat & resonance. I was sold.

I was planning to shim the barrel install to eliminate any play. Yet when the extension was first installed into the upper, was met with resistance. I stopped and immediately measured. now before anyone points it out..YES, I know a caliper is a rather poor way to measure a round bore diameter. Unfortunately I do not currently possess the correct T-bore gauge, and this will at least give something to go by. The max I could measure was .9975. Set to .998”, the caliper jaws would not fit in the upper.
71-CAC297-4-EC5-4-C74-92-AF-3-CD5-EC4-E0897.jpg

Using the same .9975”, the caliper would not slide all the way down the extension without force. This tells me the fit is within .0005”. And I am just fine with that! I couldn’t even insert a piece of .001” shim stock anyway! Very pleasant surprise.

Once again you're playing I know something you don't and I won't tell you.

I looked into the matter and what I saw didn’t impress. Azimuth uses a fair amount of wordsmithing, bragging about critical tolerances within .005 then claiming .0001 They also claim to have sold hundreds of thousands of BCGs then boast 12,000,000 parts shipped. Divide by 17 pieces and that’s fewer than three quarter million in their “storied” history. How they can claim to be an OEM for 75 manufacturers must be more wizardry of numbers. As for finding an “unlabeled” one...no compelling reason IMO.

The pictured gas block appears to be WMD’s Nitromet, nothing to write home about but they’ve earned a solid reputation. Charging handle; could be one of several offerings that didn’t spec correctly and would otherwise be labeled a “blem” but aren’t in order to protect the reputation of a prominent manufacturer. That or it really is a made in China knock-off.

All of these parts may or may not be good choices for a build, I’m happy to pay a few dollars more or in some cases a few dollars less for what I know works for me, I imagine that process is similar for others.

Nothing you said is fact. It’s your opinion. As what I say is my own. LOL There is so much behind this you simply can’t know in a few minutes of biased research.

Regardless, I’m simply posting what I do. I’m not trying to convince anybody of anything. Certainly not people here to argue for the sake of it! I’ll be posting more when it’s finished. Regards.

Then again, you’re simply sharing with the pride of knowing the whereabouts of these marvelous parts and no intention of sharing that information, which is the point of this thread. I don’t think my quick research is based on opinion but rather fact. Let’s look at a few pictures to see if we can decipher what’s what:

Your gas block, nitride finish is what you indicate.

WMD gas block, same relief cuts, shape, and finish.

Your mystery charging handle, claimed to be made by the same “Foundry Forge” as the “$80 one”, presumed to be the Radian Raptor, which it roughly resembles, though my last Raptor was $62 from Classic Firearms.
72EF04DF-E4DE-4EE2-A882-29A135427AAC.jpeg

Aaand the Gray Badger ambi-knock-off with no details on aluminum alloy aside from “aircraft grade” (which can be 6061) that is a dead ringer for yours.
3DCAA217-51E3-434A-9150-20B03CCFDB5A.png

A few key areas to note: first the pebble finish that contrasts a real Radian CH, the “steel wings” as pointed out over and over on the GB website, the roll pins (Radian uses a special coil spring), and the latch which is shaped differently than the Raptor’s but exactly like yours.

That would mean that Radian would need to change materials to 6061 (because if the knock-off were 7075 they would proudly note it), change pins, not polish before anodizing, make another material swap to steel for the handles, and finally program for a different shape latch. It is reasonable to assume those things aren’t happening for the sake of supplying another company with $27 competitive parts.

One of my Radian handles displaying the differences. I took a magnet to it and the latch handles aren’t magnetic. Feel free to snap a pic of yours with a magnet attached.

I have no axe to grind with any of your parts, but telling people you use parts that are essentially the same as time proven parts is IMO misleading. Refusing to share these secret sources makes any post a waste of everyone’s time. I’m not likely to switch from ToolCraft BCGs after owning 8 good ones but if there’s compelling evidence combined with cost savings, I might be persuaded.

A final parting shot of the Raptor that better highlights the finish and coil springs.

I’m not typically in the habit of helping those who insulted me....., but here you are. https://triarcsystems.com/product/triarc-enhanced-bcg-black-nitride/
And if you rather...they also buy them & coat them in Nickel Teflon(NP3) or even Titanium Nitride(TiN) https://triarcsystems.com/product/triarc-enhanced-bcg-np3/

http://www.reactivegunworks.com/triarc-enhanced-bcg-tin

Or, if you trust Radian so much....here ya go! Yeeeup! Radian ALSO buys these from Azimuth, stamps on their own logo & resells them...just as about a DOZEN other manufacturers! Or perhaps you believe Radian makes them. Sure..go with that. LOL!

Changed my mind. I apologize. I’m not here to argue.

BTW Skylerbone, I am a fan of the Aero M-lok handguard you are using. If my current 1st choice doesn’t come through, I may go with one of those.

How do you like it? How would you rate the barrel nut, from a personal point of view.

Those don't even come close to the prices you mention. How about a link to the unmarked BCG for $115 or lower?

Love the things! Only a minor bit of tinkering to clock things out but beautiful quality for the price. It’s as if someone at Aero was thinking “if other manufacturers can dehorn pistols, we can dehorn our parts too”.

I apologize if I sound gruff at times (or most of the time) it’s because I want things to be fair. I’ve replied enough times to this particular thread and read enough other replies to know that certain people, me included, like what we like. I also know that when I see other builds there are very often parts which pique my interest that I am otherwise clueless about.

One of those parts however is not the Radian Raptor. I know Radian patented it and produces it, OEMs it to others like Daniel Defense & Spikes Tactical, and that if these were simply built for them no one would use theirs as an OEM if the OEM were someone able to sell direct.

This in no wise detracts from the quality of your CH or any other parts you’ve chosen, but I firmly believe you are mistaken on the Radian being brethren to what you have. Yours may work every bit as well but should not be advertised as of inferred to be truly the same. Raptor style, sure, there are tons of those from Geissele to POF and Seekins. Works for you, data point noted.

Thank you for sharing your sources on parts. Despite my tone, it really is helpful to everyone who happens by your post, and some will gawk at your build thinking that is exactly what they want. By the way, I’m also a fan of BA’s barrels, having used 5 to date. That Premium Series looks terrific and I hope we get a range report soon.

I don’t typically like posting links. Unfortunately there are some who believe their sole purpose is to “Be RIGHT”! And they argue whatever they believe is WRONG! By posting a link, It gives them ammunition to say I’m trying to “plug” things. As if I’m trying to get money for pushing things. So I don’t typically like posting things in threads. I do things privately. Many members in forums Private Message me for things like that.

Absolutly... Of course everyone is free to believe as they wish. But heres the story behind it. The Rapture CH is Forged 7075-T6 Aluminum. Just like most all US made charging handles. Parts like this are made in a Foundry Forge. Just like Uppers, Lowers...Bolt Carriers. Now, Radian as a company, does high end CNC machining & finishing. They do NOT have a Foundry Forge. The main portion of any charging handle is a single forged piece. One Foundry is licensed to make & sell them to manufacturers. Radian has patents on THEIR specific finished part. But it’s the Foundry Forge that holds the keys. Exacting sizes, weight, etc. Understand though, a basic “Shape” can’t be patented. You can’t patent a Triangle...or a Rhombus, LOL. Patents must be specific. To be honest though, the Rapture design isn’t my favorite either. But this one was in stock, and not over my budget like the Radian is! I’m waiting for a Breek Warhammer. Who knows when they’ll be back in stock though.

I figured I'd share this. I put this toy together pretty inexpensively and it runs like a clock. The one on the left is my new 9mm build...https://photos.app.goo.gl/x5ijeBSjXwVxH45LA

The muzzle device is just some flash can that I got from MASDefense.com for $24 because the handguard I was using was too long for the barrel and the flashcan was cheaper than buying a new handguard.

The barrel is a 5.5" Ballistic Advantage. I don't know what to say. I've really become a fan of these barrels. I won't say they're the best for the price because I haven't tried everything, but they are a bang for the buck. At 25 yards, it'll shoot one ragged hole. I got it at Optics Planet for $110 or so.

The handguard is a cheapy from AR15handguard.com I think it was like $35 and I had it laying around so I used it. The flashcan makes it look right and it'll work well enough when I suppress it.

The upper and the dust cover parts are Aero Precision. They were blems that I got directly from Aero. I wanted a dust cover on this, but didn't need the forward assist since my bolt doesn't support it anyway. I wanna say that I got the upper for $60 and the charging handle from Aero as well. Another blem for like $15. Aero makes pretty good stuff. I've never had any complaints and I don't think twice about buying blems. My stuff doesn't stay pretty for long anyway.

The bolt carrier group is a Faxon. Another up and coming company that makes really good stuff at a competitive price. I got it from Optics Planet for $159, I think it was. I did a lot of research on 9mm BCGs and most have a compatibility issue of some sort. My research lead me to the Faxon. I am not disappointed. It is Glock and Colt pattern compatible and has an external extractor.

The optic is a Sig Romeo 4M. The one the FBI ok'd before they went to the 4T. I was looking for a temporary replacement for my 4T while it went back to Sig. I thought it would be months, but only took a couple of weeks. I picked the 4M up on sale at Primary Arms for $199. I stumbled across it while looking for some flavor of Romeo 5. It kind of turned me off to find "assembled in China" on the bottom, but it is a very nice sight and if you're in the market and looking at a $150+ Romeo 5, you might want to give the 4M a look. I'll tell you this though. The mount that comes with the 4M SUCKS!!! If you get one, figure on having to replace it. In my dealings with Sig over the 4T, I wound up with a whole new set of accessories when I got my replacement in, so I put my extra 4T mount on the 4M. The 4T mount is solid. It's lock up and repeatable zero is just like it is on my Geissele mount.

The brace is an SBA3. Enough said.

The fire control group is from Tom's Tactical. I read about them on some website, so I figured I'd give them a try. I got the nickel boron premium trigger. It's a NICE milspec trigger for $40. I know have two. I'm running one in my 9mm and another in my AR22. When I got my first one and pulled it out of the packaging, I thought it was covered with oil. It wasn't. It was just that slick. The hammer and trigger are stamped with an "S." Schmidt? Whatever, it's a nice milspec trigger, but I think I'm gonna take the plunge and drop some flavor of Geissele in the 9mm. Yes, I like it that much.

The lower is the most interesting part of this build. It seems that I fell into just the right combination of parts. I'm using a multi cal Spike's lower with Mean Endomag adapters in P-Mag bodies. This whole thing went together in about an hour and I've put about 700 rounds of 115 and 124gr ball and hollow points through it and I haven't had a single issue of any kind. It's a really neat little toy.

Comparing it to the way my 11.3" 5.56 shoots is almost like comparing apples to oranges. I can't say that the 9mm has more recoil, but the impulse or sensation is different. Right now, I'm still faster with the 5.56 build, but the 9mm is more fun to shoot. Not to mention, cheaper. I'm gonna keep working at it and do a bit of "tuning." If I can get as fast with the 9mm as I am with the 5.56, the 5.56 might start collecting a bit of dust...buy, eh. You know how it is with new toys.

Very nice Tony! All great parts. Good choice in barrels! My favorite as well. At least one...maybe a few more here feel the same.

Faxon, an “up & coming” company? LOL. Might seem that way. But they actually became an AR player in 2012. I had seen then them here & there during those first couple years, but I became very familiar with them in 2014. I’m a fan of their barrels also. My second favorite, next to Ballistic Advantage.

Again, great ARs. Now that’s how to do it! Two at a time, LOL! I love it! That would be difficult for me because each one takes me a little longer. I machine my own 80% Lowers....and I got a paralyzed left arm/hand. Over Christmas was my last one.... And I’ve machined two lowers this spring. One for my current build and one for my sons new build

One for my current build and one for my sons new build

Thanks. I thought about doing 80% lowers, but I don't have anyone locally that does type III anodizing and I prefer that finish over aluminum. I've found it to be tough. The lower that I used in the build is about 15 years or so old. I got that back when Spike's was an up and coming company and you could get them for $50.

Yeah, I've only recently heard of Faxon, but when I last went through an AR phase, cold hammer forged and chrome line barrels were all the rage and everyone just had to have a Noveske.

Yup...you were one of the ones doing way back when with me. I remember the same (cold hammer forged still has many people fooled).

Ahh, Spikes Tactical. Before I started doing 80% lowers I ONLY used Spikes. I was actually among Spikes FIRST customers. And I remember people then telling me I should get a lower from a KNOWN & PROVEN company...just like, yup! None other than Noveske! LOL! Can you imagine that though? A time when people called Spikes Tactical “Unknown” & “Unproven”! It’s difficult even for me....and I lived it!

Oh BTW, the 80% lowers I use are AMT and they come Hard Anodized. The only part that is bare is where it’s machined for the trigger group. And I just use Aluma-Black from Birchwood Casey, which is an Oxider. It’s not perfect, but can’t see it anyway. Even that, can’t tell it’s even different until it’s looked at very closely. And more importantly, the performance is untouched

Finally got everything in & assembled!!

Very nice my friend! Can’t wait to see your accuracy results as it looks that was a big part of your goal. I’m curious, if you don’t mind...., what was your total investment cost? (Not including glass)

Bushmaster XM15-E2S with 1000's of rounds down the tube.
Here is what it has and why:

xaNfywO.jpg

1) First and most important -- Everything must be New Jersey compliant, with only one evil feature. It has a pistol grip, therefore no folding stock, bayonet lug, flash hider, threaded barrel etc.. No compensator as I never want to be in the position of explaining to a New Jersey Cop, Judge or Jury that a compensator is not a flash suppressor.

2) Grip: Hogue over molded. Is comfortable and secure;

3) Stock: Ace Skeleton. Fixed. Butt pad can be 1/2" or 1". Nice cheek weld;

4) Trigger: JP. Got the gun used with a terrible trigger. At the time the internet suggested the JP.

5) Sight: Bushnell red dot 1X. Inexpensive and wanted to try a red dot. Liked it so much I use it all the time.

6) BUIS: Yankee Hill Machine folding Iron Sights came with the used gun when I got it.
