I was actually thinking about this whole thing and maybe someone else can help.

The .50 is to small, it's just not big enough to hold the components needed to get the job done. Although a few years ago, a company made a steerable .50 round and it was proven to work!

I would think that a 20mm (Anzio makes a bolt action 20mm) would be the smallest that you could put some kind of laser tracking system on board. Then make the round two or three sections to hold everything.

By making the round into separate sections, you could make the main body ride the rifling and spin freely from the other sections. The other sections don't spin and have less forces impacting them. That would mean less interference/problems from the whole round spinning.

Then use a drone, the drone would fly out in front of the sniper team searching for targets. Once found, the drone would laze the target, send info back to the team that would activate the round. Then when ready, the shooter would fire and the drone would guide the round to the laser pointer on target.

I don't think this idea is that far out with current technology, what does everyone else think?
 
Not buying those ballistics at all, but I think the very near future is going to be smart sniper rifles rather than dumb rifles shooting 4900 ft/s. Think of a scope that runs Strelok by itself and shows you where to aim.
 
The article really sounds like a press release then a valid news piece.... Notice how it says if the person was shooting from a hilltop or third to fourth floor building.... At 5 to 7 Kilometers away at human size targets? I don't think so...

Jesus first off I can’t see 7KM, second if I am angry at somebody that far away I will just pen a nasty email to them. :)

I mean honestly, let’s assume you can build a rifle and cartridge that is man portable that is capable of the mechanical precision to reliably strike a given target at phone call distance. You would still need some super whizbang optics/targeting to do the heavy lifting for the vast majority of shooters. I mean that’s what like at least 2x the longest sniper shot ever made and let’s be honest although there is a TON of skill in those guys a fair bit of luck is at play too.

If you are 4 miles down the road........I probably won’t even still be angry by the time you get here :).......besides the hellfire from the drone or the CAS has probably taken the wind out of you by then. ;)
 
Ok, one major problem, here. To be able to see 7km (7655yds, 4.3miles) you need to be 4m (13') off the ground.

Correct. Artillery is already a thing. Maybe a drone mounted weapon for precision shooting? The idea that you can pick out a target at 4.3 miles seems to be more far-fetched than a weapons system that can hit a target at that distance.
 
The barrel life on that thing is going to be measured by how many fingers and toes ya got.

I have no doubt that using a proper duplex load and a light weight copper bullet they can get that velocity. However velocity doesn't equal accuracy.

1 MOA = 1.04" @ 100 yards
100 yards = 91.44 meters
7000 / 91.22 = 76.55
1 MOA at 7KM = 76.55 x 1.04 = 79.62"

According to Wikipedia, accuracy of the Lobaev SVL is claimed to be .2 to .3 MOA; therefore, assuming zero wind, uniform gravity, the ability to distinguish a target at 7 Km, perfect adjustment for earth's rotation and target movement during whatever the heck the time of flight would be for the .408 Chey Tac over this distance, perfect projectile stability as it goes subsonic, etc., best case for this rifle's _mechanical_ accuracy at this distance would be: .2 x 79.62" = 15.92"

In other words, with human size moving targets, you will miss...
 
I too call bs. However, the bullet from a .408 Cheytac will at that speed, travel that far, making it dangerous to that distance, though not necessarily accurate or effective.

Given that the US is about to test a 6.8 at 3,200fps, at 80,000psi and the 125mm smooth bore tank rounds deliver 5,200fps. The stated 4,950fps isn’t outside the realm of possibilities.

The military can afford to replace barrels every 200rds...
But like the SU57, it’s probably more propaganda, disinformation and wishful thinking than reality.
