I had to man some tables for a friend who had a stroke. He always has 2 tables by the front door and didn't want to lose his spot for future shows. Things were slow with more trading among dealers than selling. What tickled me was the mask. About 1/3 of the people wore mask, but half of those were not worn properly. I saw noses out, beards that held the bottom out 3 inches from the chin, and even some worn on the chin. There was no social distancing although the entry and exit had a rope between them. It was a total farce. It will be interesting to see the results in a couple of weeks.

Too bad things were slow. Sounds like there was good people watching.

I'm hoping we can get a show going here before too long.

The warning below is on a box of the typical light bluish paper ear loop masks so popular today; since it does not provide protection, maybe these things shouldn't be required at a gun show. It would make it easier to identify someone who might get light fingers at a gun show........

I have not been to a gun show in twelve plus years. As for the mask wearing thing, its a mandate in NC. Dependent on your location mask wearing fluctuates among the population.

Huh? That must be a legal disclaimer. Masks may not be perfect, but they reduce the risks of transmission.

I KNOW the covid19 virus is so small it will go through the masks structure. If the structure was so tight it would stop the virus it would seriously impede airflow.

The virus travels in aerosolized moisture drops and the mask does very well stopping those.

Let's not "make the perfect the enemy of the good." :scrutiny:

I have been reading a LOT of articles about masks. Bottom line - they really don't help at all and may make more people sick. The N 95 only filters air coming in - what is exhaled is dumped out unfiltered - they are for an environment already known to be contaminated - like a hospital ward. A person wearing an N 95 who IS infected (and may not know it) will spread the virus everywhere. That's OK in a hospital ward full of sick people - they're ALREADY infected. Standard paper and cloth masks only work for maybe 20 minutes and must then be discarded. Nobody is doing that. Cheap consumer masks are almost never worn or fitted properly and are useless against a virus. Wearing a surgical mask in public works no better than wearing a bandanna tied around your face. Wearing masks is not going to save the general public. Your body is trying to get rid of toxic gas when you exhale and a mask just makes you breathe some of it back in. The most important point is that people should stop buying and wearing N 95 masks and leave them for the professional medical people who really need them to care for people who are already infected. Wearing a mask is nothing but a "feel good" measure that is being shoved upon us by the same people who want gun control because it makes them "feel better". Read up on the masks required for technicians who work with viruses. You'll be amazed. I also find it somewhat ironic that back when the Antifa thing was getting out of hand a great number of cities made it illegal to wear a mask in public (sounds reasonable, right?) And now many of those same cities have passed laws requiring you to wear a mask. Now we're really getting stupid IMO. Today I was thinking about how bizarre it is that in my town I can now walk into a gas station, a bank, a grocery store or any public place wearing a mask and open carrying a gun and nobody questions this. Think about that for a minute. I am now allowed to carry a gun openly OR concealed without a license but I am REQUIRED to wear a mask. The whole world has gone mad.

That may be true, but, you have to have something for people to look to to help with the problem. Same with early quack medicines that were basically sugar water or some odd alcohol based solution. You have to give people hope to prevent what is happening. If you don't have hope, then the would world goes into chaos, worse then what we have seen so far.

Its kinda like seat belts. Sure, they may save your life in a crash, but if its bad enough, your still being shaken like a rag doll in your seat as the car crumples all around you. Same with the face masks. They may work, might not, but you have a feeling of being on top of the problem to a degree.

Just my two cents.

I don't understand why wearing a facial covering is such a difficult concept for many people...

A facial covering (surgical mask, bandana, etc) helps limit YOUR direct projection of virus containing droplets into the air, and serves to protect OTHER people if you are infected and asymptomatic or pre-symptomatic. A properly fitted N95 or greater mask or respirator is required to truly protect the wearer.

I imagine a typical loud-mouthed and maskless "COVID Mary" could infect a bunch of people at a gun show.

The typical surgical mask is just a sneeze guard. It helps to prevent you discharging droplets on others. It does not prevent you from ingesting their aerosolized virus. In other words, marginally better than nothing.

The type of N95 mask with an exhaust valve is just the opposite -- it projects your virus toward others, while preventing you from ingesting their virus. This certainly sounds antisocial.

Best thing would be an N95 mask without an exhaust valve, worn so as to make a seal on the face, and covering the mouth and nose. And wear some kind of eye protection.

Just as beards and gas masks don't mix, neither do beards and N95 masks.

The main thing that the mask is supposed to do is reduce your tendency to touch your face - and reassure your fellows that you are a responsible person.
Except it tends to create more itchy spots encouraging folks to touch their face MORE often..................

Welcome to Arizona.... o_O

Very, very poor analogy, IMHO. The primary purpose of the seat belt is to keep the occupant from being ejected and within the safest area of the automobile surrounded by crumple zones designed to absorb impact energy and protected by airbags. And they do a damn fine job of it, too, when properly worn.

I have been reading a LOT of articles about masks.

This is where pointed remarks about quantity vs quality come in.

There is plenty of valid science indicating masks work. Here’s a list of 70 studies: https://threader.app/thread/1279144399897866248

Masks lower Rt. Lowering the Rt below 1 for a sustained period reduces the number of people who get sick and eventually the virus dies off if you keep it up long enough.

And remember: for every person who dies, about 19 are hospitalized (which means a huge expense), and 18 of those will end up with permanent heart damage, 10 with permanent lung damage, 3 will have strokes, 2 will end up with neurological damage that leads to cognitive issues. Those are huge life altering impacts. We’ve already had those impacts for millions of people.

There is plenty of valid science indicating masks don't work. If you want to wear a mask, then by all means wear one. If you want me to wear a mask you can pound salt.

I would like to see the science that says wearing of a facial covering does not at least reduce the potential transmission factor from the wearer to nearby persons. Squealing about "ma oxygen" or "if they make you wear masks today, they're coming for your guns tomorrow" is not science.
