I got an email last night from Henry. There's a recall on Single Shot Rifles and Shotguns. Apparently it is possible under certain conditions for the rifle to fire without the trigger being pulled if the hammer is partially cocked and released. They have identified the problem and will be replacing various components of the Fire Control System. As a courtesy they will also do an improvement to the Trigger pull that everyone complains about.
If you have a Henry Single Shot rifle go to the website for info. I contacted them last night and am waiting for a shipping box and label to arrive. It will be done on first come first served basis.

I love my single shot Henry 44 Mag. I use it in Southern MI for deer. The trigger pull on mine is okay too. Never measured it but it's fine for a hunting rifle.
I commend Henry for not messing around and fixing this problem.
I hope it's a quick turn around and I have it back before deer season.

Thanks for letting folks know. It's the first I've heard of it. I have a single shot in .308 and it would great to have a little improvement on that trigger, besides the recall work.

@Bandit67, I appreciate the heads up. I have Single Shots in .44 and .357 and really like them both; from the serial numbers, they are both inside the first 200 in each cartridge. I'm looking forward to the trigger upgrade. I bought replacement springs but hadn't gotten around to installing them yet. Now I won't have to. Sounds like the recall work should fix the safety issue and improve the trigger feel.

On a side note, I'll also be interested to see what they say about the .44 when they see it; the receiver has already turned a rich plum color which I assume means it wasn't blued properly from the factory. It looks pretty cool, but it shouldn't have changed this fast. I think I'll include a note asking them to take a look at it.

I bought the single shot in .308 and was very excited to get it. It was probably the prettiest rifle I owned. I was quickly disappointed. My trigger pull was beyond horrible, heavy with a "step" immediately before let off, as well as many failure to fire rounds. On researching this online I discovered that this was very common and very difficult to fix (there were several "easy fixes", but none of them were sure, and I tried them all. As I expected MUCH more from them, I traded off the gun after about 8 months of sweat and toil. My brother in law now has the gun (he knew about my problems with it) but was satisfied with it, but will be sending it in for the upgrade. If his is greatly improved when it comes back I may try one again.

This is news to me. Thanks for letting us know about the recall. I have one in 223 which is a sweet shooter. My wife hated the AR platform but liked the cartridge, so we went with the Henry. It's a beautiful piece and I really enjoy single shot rifles. I'll start the process this week. I don't hunt anymore so time to return is not critical.

Now if only Henry would offer it in 41 magnum. SIGH!

Jeff

Thanks for the heads up.

I have a 223 and a 308 in them and yes the triggers both suck (ed). Hard to pull and this gritty in between stage once you finally get the trigger to start moving. I've done the spring replacement thing on one of them and feel I managed to safely improve it some. Guess I'll put it back to OEM. Will save the springs though. Never know what they'll be like when they come back. Hopefully, much better and no need to resort to mods.

@Bandit67
Thank you for posting. This is the first I have heard about this.

I have a 45-70 steel model. Wonderful rifle. Trigger pull is just a little stiff but not bad. I will check and see if it’s part of the recall.

Thank you.

So first person here to get theirs back, please give us a report. Henry acknowledged my contact, but that’s as far as I’ve gotten. I’ll post again when I have the mailing label and ship.

Not sure why but my curiosity is piqued. If you can will you post a picture of it?

Did you contact Henry about the issues?

Thanks for the heads up just filled out the form. Henry is a good company and after this is dealt with I will be purchasing another Henry Rifle just because I like their products and have a lot of respect for the company. (been eyeing their Pump action in .22 Magnum)

Did you contact Henry about the issues?
Nope. They were well aware of the problems folks were having, and it was all part of the inherent system...basically poor design due to liability issues. Check out the Single Shot Shooters site (think thats a name) there is a very extensive thread there in regards to this.
I am not sure what you want a pic posted of...I traded the gun off.

I recently picked up the Henry single shot .223/.556 and it's super accurate.Simple and very fun to shoot.I would think if you pulled the hammer back half way and let it snap forward hitting the firing pin it might fire. Not sure if I'm sending it back yet.

One of the first rules of firearm safety.Always keep a loaded firearm pointed in a safe direction.Or a firearm thats even believed to be unloaded.

August 1, contacted Henry via their website.
August 18, received email from Henry that my "H015 Upgrade Request" is approved and that shipping carton(s) are on the way.

I shipped my rifle back to Henry in the boxes they sent me. It was a branded rifle box just like the original box my rifle came in that was inside of another shipping box. I felt confident sending it in that packaging. Tracking showed it was delivered today.

August 21, received the shipping cartons and labels, boxed up both rifles; will drop off at USPS tomorrow morning.

My .44 came home yesterday via UPS.
It came in a brand new factory box with all original contents wrapped up in the same paper as a new rifle. Oh and a Thank you note. Lol.
I'm very impressed with Henry.
I never measured the trigger pull before because it didn't bother me but I'll measure it and give a range report when I get a chance.

Good to hear. They sent me UPS shipping labels (not USPS), so I wasn't able to drop them off until yesterday. But they are on their way, scheduled to arrive at Henry on Thursday.
