I am about to purchase a set of Talley rings for my Weatherby Vanguard. I will be mounting a Leupold VX-R Patrol 3-9x40 to the rifle. What size (high, med, low) are most appropriate? Thanks!

I installed medium Talley rings for two Nikon 3x9X40 scopes, one on a Kimber 84M and the other on a Savage Axis II. I would say that medium is correct. The Axis II for example:

I do not know how I managed to not know about Talley rings. But I love them, high quality, very solid and lightweight. This is much better IMO than a rail and rings or any sort of two piece mount system.

@3Crows

a quick aside, did your Axis ll come with the laminate, or did you get it aftermarket? If aftermarket, whose?

thanks!

That is a Boyds Prairie Hunter stock. I added the V3 pillar kit (same thing at Ace Hardware, just cut your own to fit) and the V3 aluminum magazine latch (NICE!!!). I also selected on the Boyds site the stainless steel trigger guard. This and the V3 latch allows for full metal to metal pillaring and fastener torque. It was a near perfect drop in fit. I did bed it with Devcon and epoxy in the pillars.

I liked the Prairie Hunter stock because it is hollowed out in the front to reduce weight and the comb is very close to perfect for me to get a proper cheek weld for the scope. The weight of the rifle with scope and magazine is 8 pounds and 10 ounces. For comparison, my M77 Ruger in OE walnut with a similar scope is 8 pounds and 6 ounces and my Savage Scout with scope is 9 pounds or slightly under. In the original plastic stock it was right at 8 pounds and 2 ounces with scope and the Warne steel rings I first installed with a Weaver rail. Here it is still with the Warne rings and Weaver rail:

Sorry OP for going off subject, I got the Axis II at a much reduced price at Walmart and it was missing the box and scope (it was an XP) so the manager further reduced it (then later they found the box and all and I got that to!). My project was to enhance the rifle and make it unique to me and remain within the original MSRP. I am probably over a little bit but not much and I recycled the Warne rings and Weaver rail to upgrade my Axis II .223 heavy barrel which was also a deeply reduced Walmart clearance.

The Leupold’s objective (outer diameter) is .14” slimmer than a Nikon’s so you can add that amount of clearance to what @3Crows has. On both scopes this is the largest diameter to consider which just might allow for Low rings.

Remember too that different rifle stocks will place the scope at different heights relative to your eye as will your facial structure, and so the best way to determine height might be with a good lump of modeling clay or PlayDoh. Take care not to drop the scope: simply add a good bit to the top of the receiver and press the scope into place until your eye aligns properly, then measure the thickness with a depth gauge (also found on the end of calipers).

Lows would not have worked for my installs, the bell would have made contact I think. To clarify your measurement of ".14 slimmer" do you mean the objective diameter is .14 inch less overall so then the the OP would have.07 inch more clearance (than my install) between the scope and barrel?

That’s the ticket, my brain was not fully awake. Yours appears to have an 1/8” or so, which again may be different on the OP’s rifle.

Medium for me as well.
lows should be ok for 40/42s and maybe 44s, depending on barrel contour. And from what I remember of my vanguard and Howa having your bell will be tappering out bout the same time the barrel tappers down.
Mediums will give you a bit more room without being too high.

I actually went with a Leupold Backcountry one-piece rail and Warne Steel medium height rings. For my particular scope/rifle combo, I would only have about 1/4” of play front to rear when mounting my scope which means that I may have to crane my neck to get the right scope mount. I really wanted to go with the Talley rings as they receive positive reviews, but I figured a two-piece setup with the proper eye relief was more important.

I really like that Axis 3Crows... very sharp!
