I don’t know when Hodgdon took over Winchester powders, but it's been quite a while. Now you know why W231 and HP38 are the same powder. Different labels to appease brand loyalists.

On face value, it doesn't seem to make sense, but under certain conditions, and if the margin was right for Hodgdon,,, Hmmm

Preface:

I was dinking around earlier today, ran across the link I posted above. Far more curious than anything, ,,,
To confirm it was legit, I decided I would take it as far as possible w/o actually buying anything.
Standard internet transaction,,, enter name/address/shipping method,,,,,,
and then payment,,,
Saw that they accept Paypal,
When using Paypal, they usually send you back to the Vendor to complete your purchase.

Didn't quite happen that way, as I went straight from Paypal to a 'Thank you for your order' screen. (Ooops! )

Here's my receipt:

Just checked PV
The same purchase would have been $189.90:
$156 powder (+$0.95 Hodgdon)
$13.95 shipping (+$1.01 Hodgdon)
$19.95 Hazmat (Assumed to be designated as 'Handling' by Hodgdon, + $0.04 Hodgdon).
No Tax (+$15.84 Hodgdon.)

$17.84 (+ Hodgdon) difference, all but 2 bucks of it in tax,,,

Wondering if a Hodgdon Vendor is fulfilling the order, or Hodgdon is fulfilling it from their own warehouse, or if it's coming straight from Hodgdons supplier

Hmmm.

When did this option become available, or has it always been this way?

From Hodgdon's website - https://hodgdon.com/company/about-us/

"In March 2006, Hodgdon Powder Company and Winchester® Ammunition announced that Winchester® branded reloading powders would be licensed to Hodgdon. Winchester smokeless propellants, the choice of loading professionals, are available to the handloader to duplicate the factory performance of loads from handgun to rifle and shotgun."

I was aware of the Winchester/Hodgdon alliance.
Was not aware Winchester smokeless powders were available for purchase on a Hodgdon website.

Hmmm.

I'm not really sure of anything at this point, but if this all started in 2006,,,,,,,,, and with today's order number of 142, Dang,,,, that's only 0.85 orders per month!

Maybe their order counter rolled over at 999? :D

Not sue when Hodgdon offered to sell Winchester powders on their website but likely customers probably ordered their powders from online vendors at lower prices and when free shipping/HazMat were offered.

I think that is something new... I don't remember seeing that before. About 4-5 months ago I was researching powders for .45ACP and 9mm, so I was looking at their product pages... and I don't remember seeing a purchase window.

I don't see where you can buy Hodgdon powder or IMR powder online from Hodgdon. That would be really nice.
No, Hodgdon website won't be selling any Hodgdon or IMR powders as they are the manufacturer. We have to buy Hodgdon/IMR powders from other vendors.

Hodgdon is licensed to resell Winchester powders under Hodgdon label like HP-38 (W231), H110 (W296), etc. and selling Winchester label powders as a licensed vendor.

When manufactures sell their product direct they usually sell it at full Retail not to undercut their vedors.

Yup Lee does it as well as just about all others that I’ve bought from. Sometimes they have matched or given better deal due to getting lots of complaints from the retailer where I’m at. The Lee dealer where I’m at is a complete crook and never has anything in stock it all must get ordered from Lee.

In response to my order, I rec'd the following from 'Hodgdon':

We are just now starting to open up our sites to where you can purchase directly from us. Thank you for visiting or site! Please feel free to reach out by phone or email if you have any other questions

I'll let ya'll speculate on what 'starting to open up our sites' (plural) / 'thank you for visiting our site' (singular)' means,,,,

"At Retail?" I know what you're inferring, and I can't really disagree on how that usually works, but it kinda depends on what you (and others) consider retail to be and where ya shop.

"In line- somewhat comparative' might also apply,,,.

Same 'Keg of WST' order:
Midway taxed me - $210.58 (not surprising)
Hodgdon taxed me - $207.74
Graf's taxed me- $200.79
Powder Valley- didn't tax me - $199.90
Brownells didn't tax me - $195.89
MidSouth didn't tax me - $186.11

Like anything, ya gotta shop around, and while it's not necessarily the absolute best price as-is, if I wasn't taxed by Hodgdon, they would have had been beaten only by MidSouth
@ $191.94. (On that same product, on that same amount, no other items, yada yada)

What's it all mean!!??!! :what:

Probably not much, but I'm curious if anyone might have an upper hand relative to availability of Product?

I reckon we'll find out, and it's always nice to have another option
