The velocity doesn't surprise me. When I made my bullet flower arrangements several months ago, I did extensive testing to get the right results with 10mm HST projectiles in my hand loads. If I pushed them much past standard 40 S&W load levels in my 10mm they would shed their jackets. Not the look I wanted. I had to keep them kind of anaemic for the 10mm.

Standard Federal 10mm velocity, but the penetration is good. Would be fine for a lower recoil 10mm load.

Indeed, looks fine for defensive purposes.

Does make one wonder why you wouldn't just carry a .40 at that point though.

Then again, I like my 10mms for 4 legged critters so I like em hot and to penetrate deep.

Does lend some creedence to the whole "most service calibers perform about the same" philosophy, in large part because that's how manufacturers currently design them to perform.

nice shootin.

a thousand fps minimum has been my standard for self defense for a long time. i can't get there with my 380 acp, but i don't shoot hollow points in that gun.

I see this said a lot, people using a reduced power load in magnum revolvers and powerful semi autos and my view has been you carry a lower recoil load that has sufficient power for self defense, but you have the option for much more power for woods carry or when you think you'll need improved barrier penetration.

The 10mm can do things the .40 cannot and the polymer 10mm's that are out there are not much larger than .40's. Besides, when the 10mm Glocks can shoot .40 without any modifications, you're not losing anything but fractions of an inch in length and width.

It's a phenomenon in regards to 10mm because I can't say the same about any other semi auto calibers.

Federal doesn’t load very hot. I too want 10mm ammo to run faster. It’s not .40 S&W....
There are no factory options that can throw a 200gr hollow point in .40 S&W at ~1075 fps, so to say this 10mm is basically .40 S&W is false. No, it's not full power 10mm, but the versatility of 10mm is you get the option of a lower power ammo like this HST load, a full power Underwood or Doubletap load, or something in between.

I don't disagree with most of that except the "most 10mm are not that much bigger than .40" point. Apart from a full size 1911 or the Glock 29 I can't think of a 10mm small enough for carry, for most folks. And even the 29 is pretty fat compared to the similarly sized and higher capacity Glock 23.

If we are talking full size, OWB, options, sure that's very nice.

I personally really like 10mm and these rounds certainly would do the job for self defense against two legged threats, just not my first choice, especially watered down a bit.

Not a ton though, I usually only get right around 1200 FPS with my 200 grainers, so definitely not bad.

Self defense is more than just carrying a concealed pistol, it can be a home defense gun, a truck gun, or a woods gun which in that instance only open carry is acceptable to me because of the faster draw and as we know open carry is not limited by size like conceal carry is.

And when I talk about 10mm's I pretty much leave the 1911 and other steel frame pistols out and focus only on the polymer guns. That would be Glock, EAA, and FieldSpring.

The point is that that 10mm load is a weak sister. DT does have a 200 grain .40 S&W load that runs 1,050....close enough in my estimation.

Which is why I said OWB is a different story.

Even so Glocks and XD 10mms are a good big bigger than their .40 counterparts. Can't speak for the EAA and FieldSpring, never used one.

1078fps @ 200gr is 516 lb ft. A bit stiffer than most any .40 round. Tops I see in .40 from mainline mfrs is the 155gr Ranger stuff at 502, though there's probably other out there that might be hotter.

Good for defensive purposes, but a GS 185g 45+p is slightly hotter. Speer's 200g +P GD in .45 is almost identical at 518lbft.

A good round but kind of one of those solutions really looking for a problem given that it's 10mm and your firearms choices are narrowed quite a bit and ballistically equivalent ammo might be tough to acquire.

This isn't remotely close to a capable woods load and in terms of power from a fullsize pistol; you can do as well or even better with other calibers. That said, it's solid if you want to rock 10mm. You're just not gaining much with this particular combination over what's offered in .40 or .45 +p. But you can't scoff at the oomph it delivers.

I am shocked, SHOCKED to hear that a lighter bullet in a case with similar powder capacity is as hot or hotter than a heavier bullet.

What you gain in energy foot pounds using a light weight bullet in a larger caliber is decreased penetration. To some that's not a good trade off. IMO, once a bullet expands and hits 12 inches, it's fine for most general defense use except large animals.

No, it's not a woods load and it's not marketed as a woods load, it's HST, which is purpose built for self defense against people. The topic of caliber is irrelevant because if someone owns a 10mm and doesn't care to buy a .40 barrel or take the chance of a malfunction using .40 ammo with the 10mm barrel, they have a lower recoil option than boutique 10mm.

This hst load would likely be very pleasant to shoot from a full sized pistol. There's a difference between the 40 load maxed out and the 10mm load of similar velocity just getting warmed up. Nothing wrong with matching the ammo to the task. Doesn't always need to be full power.i like my 10mm loads hotter though.

Pretty much the same feeling here. My G20 is for personal defense out in the field for 4 legged critters so I like my 10MM reloads hot and heavy. I like the HST bullet in 9MM and .40 offerings.

Good info though on how the HST performed so thank you for that info here as well.
