Looked at a couple 22 handguns this week

1st off I really enjoy shooting my 22 caliber handguns, which at the moment are 4 Rugers. so this week I looked at the Ruger LCPII & Keltec P17. The Ruger is a tiny handgun, way too small for my hand. Just don't see how it would be fun to shoot for me because of its size. The other was the KelTec P17. The KelTec fit my hand much better and its really inexpensive, $179 at my LGS. But it felt like a toy, was mostly plastic and I'm concerned how it would hold up under heavy use. I've been burned by the cheap, poorly designed Taurus TX22 & I don't want to go through that again. I've read that the KelTec does at least have decent customer service so if it does fall apart KelTec will readily repair it. I know that it's inexpensive but I buy my handguns to shoot not to spend half the time being repaired. The other issue is will it run any brand , type bulk 22 ammo. 22 ammo is getting very scarce & getting pricy right now so I want a 22 that doesn't care what ammo is running through it.
 
I have had the SR22 since they first came into the market. I have shot the heck out of it. Replaced many parts not too long ago to keep it running for the next decade. This gun is crazy in how reliable it has been. Also kind of a strange in the fact that it seems to never get very dirty.

I've noticed that also, even after shooting a few hundred Remington Thunderbolts, it amazes me how clean it is upon takedown.
 
I got one of the new LCP II's just before COVID 19 locked us up for months. Took it right to the range from the LGS and shot it with the mish mash of cartridges I had in the truck at the time. shot to point of aim all the way out to about 20 yards or so. and nary a bouble.

If you want a medium size frame .22 that's going to last you several lifetimes and don't mind paying a bit more for it, I would recommend the Beretta Model 70S. Have had mine for many, many years and it's been 100% reliable with any ammo I run through it, possesses decent accuracy along with an adjustable rear sight, and has one of the nicest SAO triggers you will find on just about any quality .22 pistol. Main drawback is pricey and hard to find factory magazines. This gun just flat out shoots!

I would have to second the SR from Ruger. Wife bought one couple years ago and it has been amazing. It was her carry gun for a good while. Has proven to be very reliable and is fun to shoot. Perfect for someone looking for a smaller .22 that does not want a mouse gun. Recently got a LCPII in .22 also and while it is very small it's super easy to shoot. Has also been top notch on reliability. Certainly not a plinking gun with the very small size but super easy to shoot.

Now that firearm is what I consider pure class, absolutely beautiful! I've never seen one for sale anywhere near my area. Thanks for the heads up! Typical Italian Beretta gorgeous design. Wow! Wow! Wow!

You definitely would have to hit up the online auction sites (just checked and there are two currently listed on Gunbroker), to get one but I think it would be well worth the effort!

As soon as I saw it in an article in Guns and Ammo magazine I knew I was going to get one...and I did!
 
I have the Ruger SR22, the LCPll but what is my favorite Plinker/Trainer that I love the most? The LCR22. And if you want reliability this is your gun. I love DAO guns regardless of Revolver or pistol and this gun is not only fun to shoot but really hones your skills. Short barrel, DAO, fast action shooting. Worth every penny I paid for it.
I really enjoy shooting it for training, and at the end of every training session, I set up shotgun clays at the 50 yard bern and have at it with the LCR. Something I always look forward to doing.A certain kind of satisfaction comes with hitting them with a Small Snubbie that I just do not get with my other 22. cals.

I really like shooting my .22s.
A few weeks ago I traded for a GSG .22 1911. It shoots great. Very accurate. I have only 150rds or so through it, and no issues.
What a great trainer for my 1911 SD gun.

If I were to purchase another 22.cal it would be a GSC. Love the feel of the 1911. I have a replica BB gun that I shoot frequently and have a lot of fun with it. The GSC has a good Reputation. Thanks for reminding me.
 
I bought one of these the other day. It is a GSG 1911 in 22LR. It is a fullsized 1911 and fits in standard 1911 holsters. It has useable combat sights, functional thumb and grip safety. It weight about the same as any alloy framed 1911. I don't think it will be a lifelong shooter but for my intended purposes it should serve me well. They are reliable enough with standard ammo and extremely reliable with HV 22. It allows me to train with a platform I use for pennies instead of half dollars. These days.

Not to get off subject, but since there is a ammo shortage and if you get the GSC 1911, you could also get this BB Pistol replica that has blowback and just a fun gun to shoot. Well built, good trainer for fast action shooting.

Heh-heh, I have one of those 1911 bb guns. Everything operates the same as a real 1911. Closest thing I could get to a High Power action. Granddaughters love it. And they're deadly with it on cans! The younger girl already wants a 1911!

Now if my Dan Wesson 715 pellet revolver would come in. Backorder forever. Current times are affecting the airgun world as well as firearm world.
 
BTW, triplebike, I once had a Bersa Thunder 22. Decent .22 for a decent price. Sort of ppkish in appearance. One of the few guns I regret getting rid. Oh well, it was the recession.

I totally agree! I have a Remington 1911RAC and a SIG M17 BB gun and both make for fun (and relatively inexpensive), trainers in lieu of shooting the real thing.

I found the same results as Ayoob. I have had a lot of malfunctions and the gun is not as accurate as I like for a small gun. I actually shoot both the Kahr P380 and the Pico much better. I really do not like the trigger, but I do like the size and great for training with the small pocket pistols I love to shoot of often. I continuously have a problem on occasion with the weird safety becoming engaged when I shoot it.
I am hoping it breaks in better and shoots other ammo. right now the favorite ammo is Remington Goldens. No malfunctions using this ammo. All the others I get constant failures.

Below is a size comparison with the Kahr, Pico and a Phoenix HPA 22 cal which is a especially great shooter. I have two of them and been training with them for years. And you cannot beat the price of about $150.00. The HPA Phoenix is a serious accurate gun out to 15 yds and loves cheap ammo.

While I've not had a really great amount of shooting of my LCP II Lite Rack,(got it about two days before our dictator shut everything down last spring). It went thru about 100 - 200 rounds right out of the box with nary a hick up. Also shot (for me at least ) Point of Aim right out to 20 or so yards. As far asI'm concerned it's right up there with my PPK/s (old and new), TPH and Jennings (yes, I would be fine with one if it's was all that there was).
 
What do you already have? Why do you want another one? Just use the money to buy ammo.

If I wanted ridiculous reliability - I'd be looking at a revovler. or a pump action rifle, not anything semi-auto, but that's just me.
