My FIL asked me to find a magazine for a .284Win chambered savage 99.
They do come up on eBay and gunbroker from time to time, but those are really the only places ive found that may have them. Numrich dosent, and none of the other random contacts I've got have any.

Anyone got any recommendations on other places to check?

Nice find, I didn't get that hit on any of my searches. At this point don't really care about cost, they don't offer shipping to Hawaii, but I can figgure that out later.

Thank god I don't. It's a Hawaii gun, I'd be tempted to spend waaaaaayyyyy to much money on a resto project.

I may try buy one from the mainland tho. It or a win 88, are up there on my list of wants....I wonder if they ever made the blr in .280......

Try as hard as you can to get a 99 over a Win 88. Interesting concept but poorly executed and the triggers are both wonky and potentially downright dangerous with many reported instances of them "just firing" No manipulation whatsoever. Just bang at random. Get the 99.....or the BLR....I dont think they made it in 280.
 
I too thought he was tearing into a 99. I forget the C was a detachable mag.

On a side note I feel lucky to be one of those guys with an unobtainable part for a gun. An original Colt 1911 mag in 38 special. Not 38 super. 38 special, wadcutter only. Though it came in my colt 38 super 1911.

I never liked the 99 much, maybe the 88 s little more. I like the blr tho, I was very close to buying a ss takedown 358win a few years ago.

I think Ken waters did the article on a 99 they did in 375/284. It looked pretty impressive , he more so with today's powders.

I don't mind the early 99s think pre 25ish, after that they got blocky.

It's amazing how many eBay sellers seem to forget that Flat Rate Priority mail cost the same no matter where in the US it's going.

I have two 99s, unknown build dates. A 22 Sav HP and a 300 sav. And one BLR, a Japanese model, in 243. The 99s are better looking and smoother to shoot IMO. My 99s are very svelte looking, like a proper 99 should be. The BLR wood feels like plastic to me. Its a nice looking gun, dont get me wrong. But the 99 is such a classy looking firearm.
 
I think i need to spend more time with them, right now my opinion is along the lines of troys, the one my father in law has is tall, and kinda blocky.
I was looking at pictures of some other variants and they look svelter than his gun is. Either way its an intriguing rifle, and I look forward to eventually getting my own to mess with.....no idea when that will be tho.
 
So the seller declined to send the mag to hawaii, can't say I fault him too hard, stuff will sometimes disappear into the Richmond California container yard for months....

Anyway @edwardware was kind enough to offer to middle man the deal way early on, and did so for me, which I hugely appreciate.

Hopefully my FIL will take some pictures of the rifle once he's got it up and running....it's been long enough that I can't actually remember it, now that I think about it.
 
There is more bulk back there on all 99s compared to a traditional lever action because some of the action is embedded back there. Plus the actual visible metal receiver is relatively short. And the rotary mag makes it wider by nature. The 99C may be a bit different there too, I dont know. But they shoulder more like a traditional bolt gun, due to their wideness in comparison to the relatively thin Winchester pattern levers.

It definitely has more of a European flare to it vs the Winchester derivitives. But virtually every lever gun we are familiar with is based off the Winchester/Henry pattern.
 
i have owned a few and looked at quite a bunch of them over the years, 1, keep the butt stock tight(on any two piece stocks) as i have seen a lot of them with split butt stocks. 2, keep pressure to factory spects if you reload(no hot rodding) as i have seen some with headspace due to hot loading, the the rear tilt locking recess was peened pretty bad. seemed to happen more on .243-.308 rifles. the worst pinch i recieved with a lever action was with a savage 99 working the lever fast and not gripping the lever right(not the rifles fault).

No need to hot rod a 100 year old gun IMHO! Both my 99s have a smooth unlock action and 70% of the lock action. The last 30% before full lock takes a bit firmer pressure, and yeah, will bite ya if you arent careful. Though ive been bit by other levers too... I do love the shorter lever throw on the 99s. Not quite ruger 96 short, but still nice.

My oldest cartridge gun is 136 years old. I dont even like shooting "standard velocity" 32-20 through it. Its a Win. '73 btw.
 
i shoot and try to hunt all my older winchester rifles, top is a 1886 in 40-82, middle is 1876 in 45-60 and the bottom is a 1873 in 38-40. these three are my favorites out of all i own.
