What is your favorite western?

Try blazing saddles or the hateful eight (fairly new ) both of which use older actors with a long professional career, (Kurt Russell was a Disney favorite), if you want political incorrectness. If you want historically correct , all the guns were historically correct and that was a real 150 yr old martin guitar. priceless and smashed to pieces.
 
We're (my wife and I) are Hopalong Cassidy (William Boyd) fans, and we have all of "Hoppy's" movies and TV shows on DVDs. My wife’s favorite “Hoppy” movie is “Renegade Trail,” and mine is “Trail Dust.”:)
Modern day movies, we like “Good, Bad and Ugly,” “Lonesome Dove” and “Open Range.” And “Quigley Down Under” gets an honorable mention.
None of the above beats the old “Gunsmoke” TV shows though. We have a lot of them on DVDs too. I wish we had a lot more. So if you're thinking of buying ol' .308 Norma a Christmas gift this year, shoot me a PM and I'll let you know which "Gunsmoke" shows we already have.;)

Open Range was pretty good, Costner was sick with the flu when they were shooting the shootout scenes and you’d never know it.

1. Unforgiven
2. The Johnson County War
3. True Grit (2010)

Honorable mentions for The Shootist, Pale Rider, and A Few Dollars More.
 
This may have been mentioned earlier...don't have the time to sift through all those pages!!!...but I've been watching 'Gunsmoke' nearly every night and James Arness is one bad-a** marshal! Especially in the rarely seen pre-1960 episodes. As a kid I didn't fully appreciate Gunsmoke or Arness, preferring Bonanza and others, but now that I'm older and wiser I can see the actors and realism is top-drawer.

Actually, I think he had appendicitis. Didn't realize it at first and just thought it was stomach flue or some such.

As for favorites, Open RAnge is up there but my all time favorite is Conagher.

We watched “The Highwaymen” last night. Kevin Costner gains 15# to play Captain Frank Hamer opposite Woody Harrelson as Ranger Maney Gault in their manhunt for Bonnie and Clyde. Not bad although Cap’n Hamer might not have appreciated it and Ranger Gault would have been downright insulted.

I’ll never understand why they have to make some sort of lame ptsd conflicted half drunk sidekick out of the other half of a pair of real life bad asses. In at least one instance in real life, Maney opened fire on a mob when Captain Hamer would not, and Hamers hesitation cost a man his life. Gault, like most Rangers of the day, was the real deal. Had all the hair on him as they say.

I like about everything mentioned- The Man who Shot Liberty Valence is probably my favorite, followed by The Outlaw Josey Wales-
 
The Man who shot Liberty Valance routinely rates in the top ten of greatest westerns ever filmed. It had one of my favorite western bit actors in it. Woody Strode. Woody tossed the lever action rifle to The Duke in the alley which he used to drop Liberty.

Although he didn’t receive titular billing Woody more or less was the star in the western film ‘Sgt Rutledge’, a film ahead of its time for the societal issues it dealt with.

Little known factoid: Sheriff Woody of Toy Story fame is an homage to, as well as named after Woody Strode.

His autobiography ‘Gold Dust’ is an uncomplicated read and very enlightening.

He knew how to cover a room with a rifle with class. He gave off that "I'm just aching for a reason to shot you" look. Stand down this Sheriff Woody is packing heat.

Came across an Interesting TV Series from the 70s starring Richard Boone

Hec Ramsey..

He plays an aging Lawman who starts using science as well as guts and a fast gun to take a bite out of crime in the 1900s West..

It's a pretty darn good Series...
