This pistol has been well documented on several forums over the years! I think I got her damn near 5 years ago... Regardless she holds a real special place in my heart... This was the first full blown custom 1911 I ever got! What makes it even more special is my friend Brandan Bunker built it for me. The gun was built in both 9mm and 38 super comp (but it will fire 38 super with no issue as well).

I am not going to get into the history of Bunker and myself, but at the time he built this 1911 for me, we were going through a lot of the same things in our lives. I really did connect with him... we talked for hours about this build. As documented, the pistol was supposed to be collision course of "old meets new".... meaning if JMB had access to modern day machines, what would his vision of the perfect 1911 be (Spare me that "the original 1911 was just that talk").

The reason I wanted to write up a bit more on this pistol is because I am giving a rare in detailed peek at the internals of the gun. Something most will never, ever, ever see posted on the internet. Most 1911 threads are pics of the outside of the gun... the "look at me" pics. But it is rare is the soul of the gun pictured...

For a recap, here is the work up on her...
  • Premium Oil Grained Blue
  • Kart 9mm Cone Barrel
  • Kart 38 Super Cone Barrel
  • Deep Bevel Magwell
  • Fabricate and Blend Custom Lanyard Look MSH
  • High Power Cuts
  • French Boarder
  • Ball Cuts in Slide
  • Full Blend Front Sight
  • Hand Made Gold Bead Front Sight
  • Ultra Match Hammer Set
  • Trigger Puil 2.8lbs
  • Harrison Controls
  • Bull Nose Front of Slide
  • Bunker Arms Cartouche under Mag Release
  • Short Steel Trigger
  • Spur Hammer
  • Marvel Disconnector Cut
  • Top Slide Serrations (Leave top of slide round)
  • Nitre Blue All Small Parts
  • Extra 9mm and 38 Super extractors

To add to the top, this was the very first 1911 Brandan built on his own frame variance. I requested the serial number 7 for many reasons, but in religious context the number 7 is the number of completeness and perfection.

5 years ago the 1911's Bunker Arms was building is very much different than the 1911's he is building today. When I got this gun, the approach was the way the old masters did it... all over sized parts, all hand fit, and all very labor intensive. You can see the contact points of the barrel fit, the slide stop wear, and the utter perfection of the inner workings on the slide. Today, Brandans approach is much different... He approaches things practically with laser precision of CNC machines. His guns have evolved a lot... Coding a machine to do a lot of the labor that he once did on a mill. He now makes all his parts in house vs sourcing them. Bunker still does some of the best blueing in the business... His trade mark oil grained premium blue work (which is pictured) looks very turnbull charcoal like in color but still has that blue vs grey look. Its a dead give away that he did the finish work! Today you will see much more PVD, DLC, or "Ion Bond" coming from his shop, which look equally as attractive and the finish work he puts on the newer guns also is a dead give away that it was done in his shop!

I am lucky blessed to own a 1911 build the older way he approached guns, and the new way he approach's a custom gun as well. Both extraordinary guns, yet very different from each other.

I am not joking when I say this, to date I have not had a malfunction with this pistol... dead nuts reliable and spot on accurate!

As always enjoy the pictures and I hope you all liked the write up!

Are you crazy? Buying a gun that nice and then laying in in the dirt! ;)
That Is one sweet looking gun. The grips look like they are some type of wood burl that has been stained blue.

Beautiful gun!

What can you tell us about the grips?

My question too as the grips go perfectly with the gun; both are beautiful beyond compare!

Sure! These are actually not the original grips for the gun. When the gun was originally delivered it had double diamond grips to really bring out the old colt military feel. I honestly just didn’t think they did the gun justice.

A member on another forum was posting pictures of grips by Bob Hall... who these were made by. They are double died wood of some sort.

As picky and choosey as I get about my 1912’s and the quality of them, I’m equally as goofy with grips. Bunker does make some amazing grips in house... like first runner up to Brain Challis... but getting grips from Brian these days is damn near impossible. Bunker also has high high demand for his grips and catching him at a time where he has time to do them is also very difficult.

These Bob Hall grips were actually bought for another gun. Bunker has a set that was supposed to go on this one... however, these grips do look fantastic on her and may have found a permanent home. I do need some o rings to retime the screws to 12 o’clock.

The Hall grips shape is fantastic! I really do like the profile of them! A bit wider, and the tops do not have the “hump” that I despise on many 1911 grips. Fitment to the bushings is tight and fit properly with step depth correct where you don’t get screws sinking into them.

the only issue I have is that the grips top profile (which I love in terms of look) don’t play well with the thumb safeties on most of my guns. It’s an easy fix, but Sonce they work on this gun and look good to me, I decided to just leave em alone.

As far as Bob goes...

Bob has a full-time day job and makes grips on the side, but you wouldn’t know it from the quality and attention to detail in the end product. A member from another forum provided the blanks and he turned these out.

Hope that was helpful!

That’s always a point of discussion... my reply is typically always the same. If some dirt hurts a gun of this quality... it’s probably not as quality as I thought and has no place on my stable:)

Thanks for the info on the Bob Hall grips. I don't think I have ever seen another pair like it in terms of the color variations and the craftsmanship required to make them!

Definitely not for the faint of heart! The closest I get to setting my guns on anything remotely natural would be a wood surface and even that has to be really clean and free of any rough spots.
