“Ackley” improves the brass life, gains more case capacity thus giving more velocity or ability to load longer bullets than it’s parent case.

The nice thing about any AI cases is it is safe to fire form original non-AI cartridges thus giving a permanent brass supply with no hard to find unicorn brass. Many use the parent case for hunting, target shooting etc, with fine results and then reload as an AI case.
Neat! Thanks for the info!

Gotta throw in for the .30-06 here. It’s not the perfect cartridge for everything, but it’s never a bad choice for almost anything that you’d ask a centerfire rifle to do. And there’s no shortage of rifles for it in almost every configuration, nor shortage of ammo types.

I feel sorry for the poor 7x57 Mauser. Not a single vote so far. It’s kind of a textbook case of a nearly perfect round, but hampered severely by lack of rifles chambered in it, and lack of good factory ammo choices.

Not much you can't fix with a thousand bucks and a .30-06. (Cost went up...used to be a hundred bucks.)

Some AI improvements are minute, some have significant improvements. The 280 Remington gains quite a bit being Ackley’d.
The .280 is a great cartridge, especially for those folks who can't make up their minds as to whether they should get an '06, or .270. The Ackley'd version should be a great cartridge, for those who feel they need "MORE POWER".

Agree, the 280 is a very fine cartridge without it being AI’d, under different circumstances we would be talking about the 280 in place of the 30-06.

Not to take anything away from the 30-06 but in my mind I would have been more happy way back when if the world would have settled on .284/7mm.

You can teach an old dog new tricks, though. I used to shoot .30 cals, including .300 Win Mag, .30-06, and .308. After getting into reloading and learning a lot more about ballistics, I decided I didn't need the .30s. The first to go was the .300 Mag, then the .30-06s, and finally the .308s. I will admit to some sense of loss when I parted with my Model 7 in .308 that was my go-to hunting rifle for a couple of decades. But I replaced it with an almost identical rifle in 7mm-08 and you know what? I don't miss the .308 any more!

Here's the original .308. H.S. Precision stock and Leupold 2-7X.

And the 7mm-08 that replaced it. H.S. Precision stock and Leupold 2.5-8X.

I shoot a .270 but when it was time for my daughter, I bought her a 7mm-08.

The ‘06.

The M1 rifle, which is still a fine fighting gun, accepts it. Same for an ‘03 Springfield. Many excellent hunt8ng rifles like the Winchester 70 can be had in the cartridge, and there are many good hunting loads with modern highly effective bullets. And in modern loadings it edges out a .308 yet still has a manageable recoil and the availability of surplus cartridges mean isn’t too expensive to shoot.

The clear winner if there ever was one. In my opinion the .30-06 is the greatest full power centerfire rifle cartridge ever made.

Without a doubt my choice on this is .30-06. It's not the best at anything, but it'll get the job done in the widest variety of applications. It's a little more than you need on whitetail, just right on elk, a little lite but still workable on moose and grizzly. Heck a .30-06 is even workable for African plains game.

I chose 308 because it is a mature cartridge with loading information all over, it has proven to be accurate, it is heavy enough for most large game, has a wide range of bullet options, components are easy to find, and loaded ammunition is normally easy to find. I love the 6.5x55 Swede, but it will never be as universal as the 7.62x51.

Now that's next level thinking Legionnaire! :) To be honest there are many cartridges on this list I'd love to own such as 243win(Will be the next rifle I buy), 300win mag and 30-30Win. If you can't tell I'm a fan of Winchester cartridges lol!!

Ahh, 6.5x55 Swede... The OG 6.5 cartridge!

I have to question why I only get one. If it’s a “one cartridge to survive with” issue, I choose the .223. Good for squirrels if need be, can ear hole an elk or moose if I had to.

If it’s just a “you get one cartridge to hunt your big game with“, I’m changing my vote to 375H&H as long as I’m allowed to reload.

And if I’m not allowed to reload and have to buy factory ammo, I’ll take the 30-06.

Context matters.

I don't hunt anymore but Mule deer run all through my neighborhood. 7.62x39 (not on the list) or 30-30. The Colt 7.62 rifle is plenty accurate and I know it's limitations.
