When you want a new firearm, but...

Who else has wanted a particular firearm for a long period of time, but just can't quite convince himself or herself to buy it? What was it? Did you finally cave?

I've wanted a Marlin 1894 in .357 magnum probably right after I got my Ruger GP100 back in the early 1990s. For whatever reason, I never saw a .357 mag 1894 in person when I had the money to spend. That was until earlier this year when I came across a gloriously modernized new 1894 CSBL in a gun shop. I made it mine, and it may be the one long gun I keep until the day I meet my maker.

I'm holding off on buying more guns unless I part with at least one or two that don't get used much. But my current wish list is a S&W 686+ 3" barrel, Spanish FR8 in top shape, and still an IMI Timberwolf. Reality will be that I get the S&W some day and let the others be just a dream.

several that I want, but none that really do anything I can't do with what I have, so - no I have not caved. prices being generally up - has no inspired me to do anything, but further the idea that they would do nothing other than satisfy my desire to have them, which would immdiately be replaced by a desire for others that I also do not have, but do and will want.

I have a hankering for a .308 truck gun...

My dreamed about rifle for decades was an H&K SL-7. As a high schooler in the early 1980’s I loved creating an image of the cowboy pulling one from his saddle scabbard or the gun rack from his pickup while defending the herd from a predator. Even the ads were ruggedly cool:

$500 then was about $1,300 now, since those are now super scarce and mega pricy . . .

I got the poor man's version of that. Some people call it an SKS.

Several I'd like, but I have so many safe queens/haven't fired in years that taking one of them to the range is like getting a new gun.

I have wanted some Marlin lever actions for a while, but kept putting it off thinking it could wait. Then the Remington takeover and the fear of buying junk. Finally, the latest Remington bankruptcy forced my hand as who knew where Marlin would end up. I traded for a 45-70 Guide Gun and a JM 336 in 35 Remington (both new to me and in excellent shape), finally located a new
1895CB Octagon 45-70 at a Scheel's in Montana, and lucked across an 1896CB in 38/357 and an 1894 in 45 Colt locally. The fit and finish on my Remington guns is excellent and I have had no functional issues (so far) and am happy with accuracy before even working up my loads. With the Ruger acquisition, maybe I jumped the gun, but I am satisfied with my purchases. I have had a blast playing with my new rifles and the trades/sales that funded my purchases haven't appreciably deleted the utility of my gun collection. Now about that 9MM pistol caliber carbine and 1911 to fill that hole ....

Regards,

Kris

44 Magnum Ruger Redhawk. Wanted one for a bear gun for a number years. Always felt they were overpriced. (Still do in fact.) Kept waiting and watching for a sale, or a deal, or a price drop. Of course I'd rather throw rocks at a bear than own a Taurus, which, in my view, is priced about where the Ruger should be. (And the Taurus should be much cheaper.)

I finally bought one about 3 years ago. Paid full price for it, which was about $200 more than they were when i first started looking. Moral of the story, there is no better time to buy than now.

Actually, I could likely fill the Grand Canyon with this list. Guns I'll never own.

I've owned dozens of different guns and enjoyed each one. Now I own only a handful and that's OK as I am no longer physically able to shoot much and there also is no close range . About the only gun that would still tickle me is a flintlock long rifle of a somewhat fancy nature. would be nice to have, but isn't something I loose sleep over. I would much prefer getting out of my wheel chair and walk. A simple walk in the woods with single shot beat up .22 would be worth more to me than any firearm I can think of.

For about 6 or 7 years I have wanted an S&W 327 TRR8.
Ever since I saw the Batman movie with Jack Nicholson and his S&W 25 I have wanted one. Not with a 30” barrel though. o_O
I have wanted an S&W 586 for over 20 years.
I have wanted an S&W 27 or 28 for just as long.

One of the reasons I have not gotten these guns is whenever I find them, I do not have the money. When I have the money I cannot find them. It’s a game of car and mouse. I have purchased many other wanted guns so it is not like I sit around pining away for them.

Someday, maybe.
I’ve found the irresponsible key to getting current production, but hard-to-find guns.... go to Grab-a-Gun and find the model you want. Click “Notify Me”. When the notify you, buy it immediately. I just got a TRR8 last week that I thought I’d never see new again. Price was decent as well. Had I acted on the emails, I could have had a Colt SAA a few weeks ago and several Pythons. Don’t wait on it though.

Aside from some NFA items, the two that come to mind are

H&K MK23
Steyr AUG

Owned an AUG many moons ago but there is aftermarket triggers now-a-days. Never been a fan of HK DA/SA.. So those are my "second guesses" anytime it comes time to put my money on them.. The money is in the "gun fund" Just always pick something else.

There is definitely a lot of truth in that. I bought a Browning O/U a number of years ago, and comparable new ones are $250 to $300 more than I paid for mine. The Model 70 has been increasing in price for a number of years (or actually, the value of my dollars has been decreasing), so I probably should just pull the trigger (pun intended) on that one.

Good choices.
Back in 2012, I also got a 4" GP-100, then a couple of years later, started looking at a levergun to go with it. Looked at Uberti, Winchester, and Henry. The first two were too expensive, didn't have a side loading gate, were top eject, and had an uncomfortable buttplate. The Henry was too heavy and I didn't like that shiny brass receiver (not good for hunting). In 2017, I finally scored on a GB auction (after 2 years of trying) with a 21 y.o. JM stamped Marlin. Now, I'm reloading for both. :D

I recently bought a Colt Delta Elite pistol in 10mm. I've been wanting one most of my adult life, but other priorities have gotten head of it until now. Maybe it's all the more satisfying to have it now.

There are always guns I think I "want" but don't need. If it is something special and it shows up I usually buy it and worry about the finances after the fact. And it always works out and 6 months later I realize I don't even think of it or that it affected me in the least. And I'm just a working class stiff now living on social security and the occasional odd job. Life is short, get it, enjoy it, and don't look back.

Lots of them over the years:

Dan Wesson 44/744. Finally got one around 2010 for a very good price, I wanted one they day they came out. 1980?
S&W 629. Got one a couple of months ago. Just saw a nice one on GB and bid on it.
S&W 625. Wanted one about 30 years. Finally got it a couple of weeks ago.
Lever action .357. finally got a Marlin from a friend after decades of wanting one. Still want a Rossi r92 in SS.
9mm AR. I have 2 of them, one is parts, the other was bought for a great price just before the prices went nuts.
CZ-75's and clones. I have no CZ-75's, but I have a ton of clones, most of them Tanfoglio made.

It is a perpetual cycle. In my instance something breaks to take the $ away now. I sold the Sig 229 Enhanced Elite which had been my top of the list choice when Covid hit to cover bills. Still not clear but I want to buy one back and Sig looks to have dropped them from the current listing. The Legion variant which is more $ and unavailable in CA. Most mine have been dropped from the CA roster so that's just been timing on my part with the lack of funds.

Always wanted a SA 1919A4. At least until I was in temporary custody of one (owner deployed).
Takes tree trips from ride to bench (ammo; tripod; & weapon).
Not having a loading machine is under-fun, too.
But, you are always popular at the range when you bring one, though.

I have firearms that I have wanted for four or five years, but the opportunity cost and lack of specific need has prevented me from ever buying them. I keep thinking that, some day, I'll buy them. Who knows? Anyway, here they are.
  • Benelli M4
  • Winchester Model 70
  • Browning SA-22
