I like these threads, but they make me anxious. Our bow season in NW Fl doesn't start until the 3rd week in Oct. The upside is that season doesn't close until Feb.!

Ditto!! I love seeing everyone's success stories. But I won't be hunting until the WI firearm season kicks off. The anticipation of getting in a stand grows more each day! Lol

LONG day making meat yesterday in some beautiful public land. The bulls were screaming, beautiful hunt.

Rifle is my do it all Sako A7 30-06 flinging 180g AccuBonds. The cow went a whole ten yards after I placed the shot behind the shoulder to save meat.

Today was the eastern rifle opener in NC. My 12 year old has been practicing with his 243 and was excited for the opportunity to get his first deer.
We have a stand overlooking a sweet potato field with a small creek and woods with lots of oaks bordering 1/2 of it and a cut down and a bean field on the rest.
A cold front came through overnight and the wind was perfect, so I headed out to that stand this morning. Just after sun up i heard a diesel, and a tractor entered the field and started mowing to prep for picking.
So we went home for a while but returned for an afternoon hunt.
It was a beautiful afternoon and we saw a big spike, and a couple of does. They stayed out of my sons comfortable range, so we just watched them graze.
With about 10 minutes of legal light left, I could hear something moving through the woods behind us, but couldn't see it through the brush, so I told my son to keep his eyes open. 50 yards to our right a deer walked out, and I could tell right away it was fairly big.
He stopped perfectly broadside and looked right at us, I told my son to take the shot.
He fired and the deer took off stumbling, did a wide 180 and headed back into the woods. He went about 75 yards before crashing in some thick stuff.
He put the bullet right behind the front leg and got both lungs.
The deer is a nice 8 point with 16.25" inside spread. We've got a few trailcam pics of him and he's at least 3 if not older.
My son is ecstatic over his first deer, and I'm one happy dad that I got to share this moment with him.
Sorry for the long winded post.

Got out for my waterfowl opener today. Official opener was last weekend but I had other commitments.

Took out a new to me 1967 Wingmaster AP fitted with an Express barrel. It loads and cycles smoothly and is very nimble.
First shot out of this 870 folded a decoying duck. Picked up another too. This gun fits and shoots well for me.

Anybody can identify the ducks? I think one is a molting mallard drake. The other I'm not sure, and none of the images on Ducks Unlimited match up. Thanks!

I can't tell if the mallard is a drake or not from the photo. The other is a widgeon hen I'm pretty sure. The drakes have a lot of white on their wings. Some early season ducks are difficult to identify. The bill gives the widgeon away.

Thanks, I think it is a wigeon as well now. The other is a Mallard of some sort, although if it were a hen I think there's be a lot more brown feathers for the wings.

Nope. I just looked again and again the bill gives it away. The dark blotches and orange color identify it as a hen. A drake has an unsplotched yellow bill.

15 year old Grandson bagged this buck last evening for the early Blackpowder season.

As a parent and Grandparent you wonder how deep the "hunting bug", training, and time spent will manifest itself in the future. He got his first deer at five years old....the desire to develop hunting skills has steadily grown. My son and I have tried to ease him into solitary hunting, being on his own and it seems to have paid off. Add to it, he's been going thru chemo treatments for the last couple of years and isn't always at his physical best.

My son had Guard drill and Grandson went hunting on his own. By the time his father got home the boy had already gutted the deer, drug it to the shop, hung it up and had it skinned out. Together they boned it out and put the meat in the freezer. By contrast I was in my 30's before I could do what he did. Thank the good Lord for these moments in time.
