This thread is for the purpose of posting pictures and/or written observations of your hunting results with shotgun slugs, rifled and sabot. This thread can be an archive of sorts to document the capability of shotgun slugs on game.

I’m watching this thread. I have 16 slugs sitting on my nightstand right now waiting for a chance to get them halfway sighted in and then use what’s left for hunting. I have 4 Hornady Ballistic tip low recoil slugs that I will carry just in case a shot is needed to put an animal down, but I will be hunting with 3” 1oz truball slugs. I have only shot a few and they work well in my XTR12 so I’m hoping to make meat with a slug this year.
 
Years ago I had a Savage 24 (30-30/12 smoothbore) dropped a small doe at 40 yards, thru a bush with a Brenneke slug. She dropped right there. Never took a step.
Slug went clear thru, from left to right, lung/heart shot.
 
My first deer was hit with a slug from a 12ga. Mossberg 500, it carried a piece of branch it hit with it into the deer, talk about brush busting. lol

I wasn't long out of the Army and used a technique they had trained us in called "quick kill". You just quickly shouldered your gun and looked over it with both eyes open and fired. The deer was running across in front of me and I didn't think about it, just did it.

Hit the spine just behind the neck and it dropped like a sack of potatoes. It did require a coup de grace from my revolver.

Spine shots look cool and can be the result of so many lost game animals. If the round only did a "shock" job and didn't damage the spinal cord, once the shock has worn, off, I've seen deer get up from what looked like a quick kill shot and run off never to be found again! I've seen it with rifle/shotgun and archery!

Larger rounds such as a shotgun slug can have a larger temporary wound channel. Any deer that drops right away after a shot always has another round chambered quickly and in my sights as quickly as possible in case it so much as twitches again. Lost a handful this way myself and by friends with me as well. One got up as we were walking towards it.

Shotguns and shotgun slugs have been around and done an excellent job on game animals for a long time. Great thread and I hope we get a lot of responses. I always leave the shotgun home most of the time when hunting. May need to use one more often. I am a fan of heavy and slow to get the job done in most cases. The energy dump is amazing from a slug.
 
My best slug gun has been a 11-87 with a red dot sight and the best accuracy and performance has been with Winchester Premium Sabot slugs. I have shot dozens of deer. In my experience faster Sabot slugs are better for accuracy and performance.
 
I took my trusty Rem 100 Sporting with a 20" rifled barrel (having taken a bunch of wood off a second fore end that I bought to use with this barrel) to the range today to sight in with Fed 300gr Sabot slugs (1500 fps) and the iron sights that came on the barrel. I ended up producing a1-1/2" group of 3 at 50 Yards, centered 1-1/2" high at 50 yards. I hunt with rifles here in CO but I do feel comfortable with these slugs and shotgun/barrel set-up.

I like to use buckshot in my shotguns as the first 3 rnds and have 2 slugs as backups, a couple of times I have dropped multiple deer with followup shots using 00 buck when the deer were grazing, one year I dropped 2 and while getting them in the truck bed I dropped another, none ran off but all were shot within 100ft.
My experience with slugs are the Remington 12ga and they have always dropped DRT with lung and heart shots, I think the big slow slug has a good knockdown effect and I would feel confident with them out to 100yrds which is about the max shot in NW Georgia.
 
I hunt with Lyman 525 grain slugs cast with WW alloy, bases filled and struck flat with hot glue, recipe from Lyman manual with a healty charge of Blue Dot. Out of my H&R Ultra Slug off a rest, it shoots 1.3" center-to-center groups at 100 yards. Pic shows 5 slugs, center is unfired and the other 4 went through deer and into the ground. Most of the shots are so close to my tree stand, it's easy to find them and dig them up. This combo is pretty effective. Slugs.jpg
