While there's some expected anti drivel, it is surprising that the NYT would publish a recognition that people who have never wanted a gun are driving the sales boom.

Many gun buyers now are saying they are motivated by a new destabilizing sense that is pushing even people who had considered themselves anti-gun to buy weapons for the first time — and people who already have them to buy more.

The nation is on track in 2020 to stockpile at record rates, according to groups that track background checks from F.B.I. data. Across the country, Americans bought 15.1 million guns in the seven months this year from March through September, a 91 percent leap from the same period in 2019, according to seasonally adjusted firearms sales estimates from The Trace, a nonprofit news organization that focuses on gun issues. The F.B.I. has also processed more background checks for gun purchases in just the first nine months of 2020 than it has for any previous full year, F.B.I. data show.

F.B.I. data shows sales spiked earlier this year as virus fears spread. And sharp increases in sales are seemingly occurring everywhere: The states with the lowest jump in sales in September, for example, were Alaska and North Dakota, each up about one-third compared with September 2019. States with the largest gains included Michigan, up 198 percent over September 2019, and New Jersey, up 180 percent, according to estimates by The Trace.
It’s difficult to know exactly who is buying guns at any certain time in America. Gun shop owners, gun rights groups and gun lobbying groups said they were now selling more weapons than usual to Black shoppers, and to women in particular, and more weapons to first-time gun owners generally.

“The year 2020 has been just one long advertisement for why someone may want to have a firearm to defend themselves,” said Douglas Jefferson, the vice president for the National African American Gun Association, which has seen the biggest increase in membership this year since the group was formed in 2015.

But when it comes to gun ownership there’s something uniquely American that cuts across party affiliation and social boundaries — leaving liberals and conservatives jostling for ammunition because they want to brace for whatever comes next.

Other shoppers said they bought a weapon because they were scared that calls to defund the police would be heeded. Some said they were scared of the police. Some were scared that Joseph R. Biden Jr. would become president. Others were scared of four more years of President Trump.

Don Woodson was overseeing the Trojan Arms and Tactical table of dozens of 9-millimeter black, pink and Tiffany turquoise semiautomatic guns. He estimated 70 percent of his sales at the show were to new gun owners, many of whom told him that they are afraid of rioters.

“People who never ever would have had guns before,” he said. “Now, they’re looking for security.”

Normal people- those who don't believe Civil War is coming and/or openly fap over it- are a great addition to our arsenal to defend 2A rights and it's NOT a good idea to tie this to one party. That's what the NYT times is saying- the 2A cuts across all stripes of the political landscape and I believe that all politicians should divorce 2A from the rest of their platform.

It is 2020. It's a little nuts. I keep telling myself it is like Y2K. Don't get me wrong I'm still watching closely. I'm cautiously thankful that my family and I live in the sticks. One more day and we shall see what other crap 2020 can heap on us.

Everybody stay safe and watch out for each other.

So, the sad thing is the below comment to the NYT story was highlighted by the paper. The commenter states you can't walk into a dealership and buy a car without a driver's license, but you can walk into a gun shop or show and buy a gun. Yet, there is no requirement to have a license to purchase a vehicle, and no FFL would sell a firearm without ID. As far as a face to face cash purchase....no one is required to verify much of anything with a car or a gun. Where's the outcry about the "craigslist loophole" for uninsured people buying cars?

Can anyone without a driver's license walk into a car dealership and buy a car? No. Why is it so easy in this country to walk into any gun shop or gun show and buy a gun? They're both killing machines. Of course, the specious argument is that one is in the Bill of Rights and one isn't, but until it's mandatory for people to go through some sort of training and licensing to operate a firearm, I will never feel safe from people that panic-buy weaponry to defend against this or that.

Lol, now that is funny. "EVEN the NY TIMES". I guess so, considering the crime wave is more of a Tidal wave since Marxist leader de Blasio de-funded the Police. And for sure he knew exactly what would happen when he did this. Just part of the plan.

Yep, they will have a gun to protect themselves but without training they probably will harm themselves or other innocents when they pull the trigger.

My local jeweler was held up by two Arabs. He shot himself 3 times below the waist as he tried to draw and fire at them. He lived....barely.

Can we stick to the topic without irrelevant remarks. Articles like that from the NYTimes have appeared in quite a few media sources not usually associated with gun rights. The basic points are similar:

1. Need for self-defense
2. Concerns about the political climate.

The industry sources also point out an increase in sales and esp. indicate an increase in sales to women and minority members. The latter's motivations are concerns for a political climate not friendly to them and police actions which are not friendly to them.

Just anecdotally, I was in the LGS doing paperwork some handguns and there were many buyers. It was split almost equally between men and women and almost half minority members. For the men, pump shotguns were the long arm of choice. The neutered ARs of NY seem not appealing to many. The handguns were various semis with the smaller 9s and 380s for CCW.

Possibly the best things to pull from that article are the 91% increase and that being 15 million arms.

If we, arbitrarily, say that half that 15 million (or right at ±10% of the US populations) are first-time buyers, and that they are buying two boxes of ammo, each, that's 15 million boxes of ammo. That, there's your shortage right there.

The Comments from these articles are telling. They also appear to suck intelligence rout of anyone reading them, too. Sigh. But, the sheer number who are surprised to find that such sales are relatively anonymous (outside of FOID States) continues to gall.

I personally got an interesting tidbit of information from that article.

The NAAGA. I didn’t know it existed. I think it may be a good idea to join.

Were exactly were you at? What smaller guns? What 380's? Were the heck are they even getting 380 ammo?

Glock 43s, 48s, SW Shields, the smaller Sigs in 9mm. SW 380 Ezs. The store had ammo and is too far away from you. You can find FMJ 380 on line for off brands at $1.60 per round.

I was in one of the LGS today and there were 4 ladies talking with one of the sales personnel about hand guns. I shoot there 2 or 3 times a week and there are all kinds of people there looking and buying. The previously mentioned 4 ladies were disappointed as all the concealable and reasonably priced hand guns are out of stock and the staff have no idea when they will be replenished. It has been this way for the last 4 or 5 months, very limited amount of firearms on hand. Most of the conversations I've listened in on while browsing the merchandise is that people are afraid of the social discord happening and want a means of protection.

I had to laugh at the characterization of "normal" people.

Is there a new "norm" a-coming?

Where everybody's armed and polite?

Shades of Louis L'Amour. Shades of Robert Heinlein. Shades of Terry Twothirtyaren.

Interesting article in Military.com and fear of a Marxist revolution.

I had to laugh as well. You might not use the word Civil War, but total chaos or Revolution is believed by many including top ranked Military. A fallen economy, open borders, more Antif and BLM attacks and growing, defunding of police and on and on and on. Yes, this, the people in this Country do not all have our head in the ground. Regardless, here is the letter, you be the judge.

It has been a Silent type of Mental divide for a few years.
With four very close family members, we Can Not discuss any Current Events (not even news overseas), because it would lead to various types of disagreement. This doesn't factor in that (with two of them) wearing Hearing Aids and old age makes it so Much more difficult.

This Mental Divide has created a psychological split preventing/precluding >> almost any useful discussions <<.

At least the widespread sense of insecurity around the country has allowed a somewhat shared awareness of self-defense issues inside of cities, and the growing need for our Constitutional Gun Rights.

A "destabilizing sense", ok. Or what I call "looking" and "seeing".

What the NYT calls this "destabilizing sense" is a much more prolonged drawn-out replay of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which I suppose most of us recall with great clarity. I happened to be standing outside the terminal at Newark International Airport that clear morning, since I had landed about an hour before the first attack on the WTC. The smoke was rising into the clear blue sky. A well dressed middle-aged lady was standing at the curb, also looking up and clearly alarmed. She may have arrived on the same flight I was on; I don't know, but this total stranger asked me something like, what does this mean? What should we do?

Knowing nothing more than we were under attack, not knowing from whom, or how long the attack would last, I looked at her and spoke calmly. "Go home," I told her, "and prepare to defend yourself."

Her alarm turned into a look of sheer terror. She had no idea how to defend herself.

That's what's going on now, only it's been going on for months. The time to prepare has passed.

Similar article. There are quite a few of these out there. It has implications for all kinds of RKBA issues and lobbying for gun rights. Discuss it some other day.

BTW, in another thread we had the usual 'gun is a tool, toy' ploy to make guns sound nice. MSRs as a palliative. This sort of article clearly shows the new wave of purchases is for implements of lethal force and not toys.

Any “secondary” panic buyers out there?

I went insane and bought up guns and primers in a panic, because I saw the market going crazy and everything I wanted to buy was disappearing or doubling in price.

I didn’t actually fear that protestors were going to come get me.
