.270 Win long action?

Here is the old Monkey Ward '06. There wasn't much of a choice for background.

This is the only rifle that has ever given me scope eye. I forgot one other thing that I did to it. I jeweled the bolt.

Thanks for posting the photo!

The extractor on mine was jeweled when I bought it, as was the extractor on my friend Ron's example -- jeweling the rest of the bolt was a nice touch on your part.

I'm looking at a Bergara Premier barreled action for drop into an Oryx chassis to be used as a long-range precision target rifle. It has a 1:10 twist rate. Just love those Bergara bolts ... gotta have one. Was originally thinking 6.5 Creedmoor, but it looks like the .270 Win gives similar ballistics, has a heavier bullet, and is cheaper per round (I'm not a hand loader). Not to mention for resale, if it ever comes to that, would be more attractive as a hunting rifle, no?
.270's make a good hunting rifle but they don't have a good reputation as a target round. The .308 family is way better for precision or a round designed for competition like the 6.5. It is the last round I would pick for that job. It's been tried many times with little success.

Thanks, ya, I'm pretty much going to go with something in short action; most likely 6.5 mm CM, though I might prefer 6 mm CM if I could find a rifle or a barreled action in stock in that caliber.

If I were to be choosing between a .264 or a .277 caliber cartridge for said purposes it would be the 6.5 PRC hands down.

Being you are not a hand loader that rules out the .270 WIN, it would never really be in the race given your perimeters in my view. And I’m not too impressed with the stories of the 6.5 CM on large bodied elk out west here, probably just shot placement or poor projectile choosing but nevertheless. Maybe large bodied hunting is not in your future with said rifle, then the 6.5 CM would do great for target shooting.

The 6.5 PRC adds another 200-250 FPS on the 6.5 CM and has factory match ammo being produced for it currently and will probably only increase over time in offerings.

I had a 50's era Mauser Sporter .270 Win built on a "Standard Modell" 98 action.
Some manufactures 150gr loadings did not fit into the magazine.

When the Norwegians coverted ex-Nazi K98s to 30-06, they had to grind or mill a rounded notch into the back of the receiver ring to make enough room for stripper clip loading:

I have a Peruvian FN M1935 M98 type originally chambered for 7.65x53 that was sent back to FN in the 50's to be rebarreled to 30-06. It has the magazine box lengthened, the forward clearence cut into the front receiver ring, and "30" stamped into rear receiver bridge. The conversion by FN is done very well, and the rifle is very accurate.

Some South American M98 7.65mm to 30-06 conversions were done in country with just the original barrel rechambered. Because of the oversized barrel they tend to not shoot so well.

If you don't have a long-action, you'll need an "action stretcher", (which, to my knowledge, doesn't exist).

Thanks, I'm pretty much decided to go with a short action. Brownell's still has in-stock status on Howa 6.5 CM barrelled actions and Oryx chasses for same, so that's my top candidate at the moment. Though I'd really rather have a Bergara or a Tikka.

Right now, Cabelas has a few new Bergara Woodsman rifles in their "Used Guns" section online. I just ordered a .30-06, but there are 6.5 CR, 7mm-08, .308, and .243 out there. All going for $699. Mine is showing up tomorrow.

Fwiw....

Rem 700 BDL had pressed checkering at first. Stock design changed ( wider forend and other? ) And they went cut checkering.
Solid panel.
Think around 76 they did skip line.
My .243 and .300 winmags were solid panel.
Nice little set I had LOL.
Been a synth on 700 guy since.

As for long or short action. Like shorts for looks and lesser bolt stroke.

But get a #1 and none of that matters :)

Hunting round vs target round......if I was shooting deer from a bench maybe itd matter.

.5" diff at 100 is huge for scoring points on paper. Doesnt mean diddly for scoring points on a rack in the back of a pickup.

Yeah, smaller groups help w confidence.

Dunno how much " bench bravado " influences shooting afield.

Bench to field isnt fully transferable.

I shoot decent and tweak my gear. But am proly a 400 and in shooter, if using bipods, as thats what im comfortable with.
No bipods, proly 250.

Sorry, I don't buy used guns from Cabelas anymore. They won't let me take off the trigger lock to test the action. No exceptions.

Eh, these are actually new guns (still have Bergara sticker on the barrel). The Woodsman configuration is being discontinued, so I guess they are pushing them out as "used."

OK, I was thinking about running up to Green Bay one of these days to see what my nearest Cabelas had, though their online catalog isn't too hopeful for stock there.

My personal feeling on the 1-10 the .270 and the .25s carry is that (this is gonna be pretty irrational) I feel like I'm leaving performance on the table.
I had the same issue with my 6-284.
Its like, I got all this powder, I should be able to stuff a long slippery bullet out front and put it to use.

Don't NEED any of it, I do just fine on steel and squish, with a .450ish bc bullet at 2850fps.....but i WANTS IT!

So take anything I say on the matter with grain of salt, and that in mind......

The .270 WCF... is a very well-balanced cartridge.

130-150 gr. bullets have ~ the same energy.

...and if you go over 150 gr...? You run out of gas pretty quick.

But the .270 Nosler ABLR 150 gr. has a BC of 0.591!

270cal-150gr-ABLR-Bullet-Info.jpg

Almost identical to the .30 Nosler ABLR 190 gr., just 0.025 of BC behind the 7mm Nosler ABLR 168 gr., and just 0.035 of BC behind the 6.5mm Nosler ABLR 142 gr.

... or ~ 12-17 fps/100 yds respectively.

And will hold (from a 2800 fps/22" Bbl.) ~ 2,146 fps/1,534 ft-lbs at 450 yds.

What can't you kill w/ that?

Pretty much everything with my .270 lol, it wouldn't stabilize the 150ablrs properly.
If those had shot ok, they would probably have been the only bullets used in that rifle. The slightly shorter and lighter 145eld-xs tho shot great.
I'm 99% sure I gave the rest of the ones i had to one of the forumites.....might have had better luck than I.

This isn't to say they WONT work in a 1-10 twist they just didn't work well in mine. Marginal stability also reduces the effective BC of the bullet. Even if they HAD shot well, they may not have given any real advantage over an accubond or Eld etc.

My 280AI shot the 168s pretty well, but had enough random fliers I went back to the 162Elds and 160tmks.

In Maine, they let me test several triggers on handguns last year and I bought a Rem 1911 R1S...(Best trigger on any 1911 I've ever tried. It's even better than the Colt National Match .45 that was passed down to me.)

They told me it was corporate policy. Maybe they lied to me, and it's a local thing. Apparently some idiot brought a bullet into the store, asked to look at at used gun, then shot himself. That's the story anyway. Since they couldn't come up with any better way of dealing with that scenario and still be able to accomodate a repeat customer who is looking at a used gun I elected to not do any more business with them.
