Let's see the .22 rifles that make you smile

When I first started helping out with the Junior Rifle Team I decided to make my own cheap rifle for competition as the club rilfes/ammo were for the kids only. I bought a Savage MKI single shot with Williams peep sights for about $350.

The plastic stock was crap so I bought a Boyd's Tacticool wooden stock, modified the pistol grip area and cut it down to accept my Anschutz 8001 air rifle butt plate. The palm rest is one made by a local machinist that fairly well matches an Anschutz model.

Unfortunately it was only good for about a half inch group at 50 meters so this limited my scores. After I competed with it once, the head coach told me to use the extra KK300 for the next competition.

My granddaughter has it now.

I have 2 old style Model 60s from before Marlin shortened the barrels and magazines. This one wears Tech Sights and is quite a shooter with the 26" sight radius.

I got a Henry for Christmas. With the ammo shortages, the ability to handle short, long, cb, lr, quiet, stingers, etc is a big benefit.

Many people seem to dislike scopes on lever actions but this rifle seems like it would be a waste without it. The hits in the X are with the scope once sighted in.

Back when I was first getting serious about rifle competition the rifle I longed for above all others was the exotic Swiss made Hammerli. I they were the royalty for target riffles at that time and figured that getting one in my hands would put me on a sure path to Olympic glory. But Royalty also came with a royal price tag, which greatly exceeded my teenage financial prospects. But I promised myself to own one when my financial situation improved, which eventually came to pass. It has been upward of a quarter century since I last fired it in International Style competition and it now resides in my retirement rack for old favorites. But I still consider it the Royalty of .22 target rifles..

Both rifles got some excercise last week. Definitely big smiles!

Three of mine. 1926 52 Win. Late 455 CZ455 varmint, and late 60s Savage/Anschutz 141 Sporter. A Frankenstein 10-22 with Shaw barrel, Kidd trigger, Ruger laminated stock and a few other goodies is fourth. Wish I had my 39 Marlin but #2 son is taking care of that one.

I have a couple that make me smile, but this one takes the cake…smile and laugh every time I take it out.

While my old Marlin 99M1, Savage 120, and Romanian M69 always makes me smile, so does the 4.5" AR22 pistol I built and here lately the Kel-Tec CP33 with a micro reflex sure has made me smile with its 33 round magazines and its accuracy.

Which site do you have on the CP-33?

This one that I put together in the last month; Ruger 10/22 receiver with a Volquartsen Firefly bolt replacement. Tac-Sol fluted threaded 0.920 barrel free-floated in a Butler Creek folding stock. Trigger at 1.75#. Shoots and cycles CCI Quiets or 22 Shorts. Cheap 4X32 scope, Talley 10/22 lightweight mounts. Weight right at just under 4 #'s. Sweet as candy.

I am running a Swampfox Optics Kingslayer on my CP33. I actually have several Swampfox optics, two Kingslayer's and a Liberty on pistols and a Blade 1X prism on an AR along with their Tomahawk 1-4 LPVO. The Kingslayer that is on the CP33 is the green circle dot version which I love for how quick it is, especially when picking up clay birds at 50 yards.

This sears Ranger I bought at a gunshow for my youngest daughter before she could walk ... the stock had been cut down and I thought it would be a perfect trainer. My wife said it was ugly, when I introduced Abby to it, she said ICK its ugly! Fortunately I found an unmolested stock on ebay ... after getting a front sight insert and drilling out a holly carb jet for the rear peep, its a tack driver and I enjoy it!



Next, 2 Crickets ... the Birch, I bought for Abby when she was 6, she didnt like it because "its loud and jumps" ... she was wearing plugs and muff's and didnt like the recoil. Then a year or two later she said she'd go shooting with me if I bought her a pink gun (yes, she's a girly girl) and she wanted a "looky-through thing" (scope) ... so, got her the Pink Cricket and mounted a 4x I had in the shelf ... this one is still unfired

Anschutz 1712.

I turned my inner kid loose when I built this. I turned down a .920 20" Green Mountain barrel for it and trued, head spaced, and jeweled the bolt.I polished the receiver and scope rail and have recently added a better trigger. I glued up 1/2" spruce plywood to make the stock and hollowed out the fore end. The butt plate is made from 1/2" aluminum and is hollowed out on the inside. No, I wasn't on any drugs when I did the paint job which is protected with several coats of MInWax clear gloss poly. It is topped off with a Mueller APV scope. I don't remember the exact weight but it's pretty light and is an accurate little fun gun. The trigger group is now aluminum color to match the rest of the rifle.

Probably one of my most used. A JW-15. I bought five of these in the 90’s and kept the least accurate one to play with. Eventually sold the others. The paint on it is close to 20 years old now with an epoxy top coat.


Next would be a 10/22 I put together this year. 18” Feddersen barrel, Kidd trigger, Victor Company stock FX1000 Black, etc.... it’s a shooter, but it doesn’t see any field use.

GOOD JOB!!!
That makes me smile just to look at it ... not in a laughing way either!
Then to read all the special touches you added (or subtracted) while building it makes it that much more impressive ...
That's not just throwing parts together like some of mine, its a REAL BUILD!!!

That Ranger looks like the single-shot version of my Marlin M80 (made for Sears). For what was a fairly inexpensive rifle in its day, it certainly punches above its weight, accuracy-wise.

Anschutz 1808. Olympic match action 5 shot mags, and a MacMillan thumbhole silhouette stock.

Marlin 882. Tube fed bolt action. Easy to carry in the woods with no box mag poking my hand and insanely accurate. A Lakefield mk ll resurrected from the dead.. and my old friend the Marlin model 60 I purchased new in 1984.
