Oh, I now see that yours is a bolt gun. Will be interesting to see if I get similar results.

it had a bullish 24 inch barrel on it. Loved that gun. I sold it after a 1000 rounds because I Knew that it would lose accuracy. So I sold a good rifle that I miss. But it paid for other fun. Can’t remember what though.

The reason my target rifle is a 223, is that I should be able to get five thousand rounds out of it before any serious degradation of accuracy, i.e. greater than 1.25 MOA.

~2MOA is not bad for an FMJ, Hornady’s being some of the best. But a VMax, they are not.

For a fighting AR, your DD7 is doing well with the lighter bullets, @peeplwtchr.
The seven is a fast twist for a 60 VMax, but I would try those for some accuracy. They best the 75bthp by a fair margin at shorter ranges.

If it doesn’t work with Varget and a VMax, your rifle is broken.;)

Using a red dot for ladder testing at 200 yds is probably not the best method. 2MOA for those bullets is pretty good. Same bullet and CFE223 dialed in around 26.5g for me.
That's right where they dialed in with CFE223 for me as well. Really opened up after 27.

Welcome to your journey. I started with an AR, a 3x prism, and the cheapest ammo I could find.
Learned a lot, but learned a lot more when I ventured outside those parameters.
Don't be afraid to experiment. It can (will) be fun and frustrating

My DD is a v7 pro. The 18 inch barrel does spin them fast, I once keyholedbad russian 55gr Ammo, but a good hornady 55gr does okay. The 75gr is tacks all day.

I will try vmax too, thx.

Yeah I forgot I had the dot on it. I haven't shot it for 5 months, because its been 100 degrees plus here for that long. Pointless testing in those temps. When I got to the range yesterday I was like :what:

BTW after around 5k rounds, I noticed about a .5-1moa degredation, I thought it was me, as I have read that .223 barrels aren't shot out until 13k plus. But the S&W M&P is a pencil barrel, and has been shot in extreme heat for half of those. And yes, I remove copper when the borescope sees alot. Just did it before this test. Another factor may be that it was my first AR, and I did all kinds of crazy stuff before I knew better, like cleaning from the muzzle end of the barrel, or from the chamber with no bore guide.
It's a fantasticly reliable gun, I'd buy it again in a second. Maybe a carbon fiber barrel and freefloat next?

I've been looking FOR TAC for a while... but it seems to be Unobtanium right now.
I found and ordered H322 last night, it is often compared to TAC for accuracy. Its also in the Extreme line fot non-temp sensitivity. I need that here.

I use BL-C(2) . The target in my avatar is two groups at 50 yards, the first centered, the second after adjusting the scope for 200 yards. I then used a new target at 200 , group was about 2.25" , a little over MOA. This was from my first Axis, standard contour barrel, 1:9.25. Mixed brass, CCI 400, 25.8 gr. BL-C(2) Hornady 55 gr. FMJ-BT. 2.23"COL. (2.2" works fine, also.)
This loads shoots well from AR's also, It's been used in both of my son's AR's (DPMS Sportical and Oracle) and the 10.5" PSA upper/Anderson Lower I have.
I will expect better from my varmint barrel Axis II come spring.

Yeah, doing 75gr loads for my DD 1:7. No point in trying to get accurate w/a 55gr FMJ in 1:7.

Fixed it for you. If you don’t believe me, try some Berger 55 gr HP, Nosler 55 gr Ballistic Tips, Hornady 55 gr V-Max or Sierra 55 gr BlitzKings and get back to me. Heck, my cheap PA-15 1in 7” twist even shoots factory Fiocchi 40 gr V-Max close to MOA. The bottom line is that open base FMJ bullets are cheap for a reason and hollow point or soft points are more expensive because they are more expensive to manufacture and perform better. My “all around” load for our AR’s is the Hornady 62 gr BTHP, which used to be available for just over .10 a bullet from Mid-South Shooters Supply over 24.5 gr of TAC. It doesn’t quite equal the 69 gr Nosler Custom Competition or Sierra MatchKing, but is pretty darn close. It may not work in your particular rifle, but has given great performance in the 6 AR’s in our extended household. (3 1 in 7”, 2 1 in 8” and 1 1 in 9”, with barrels from 12.5” to 24”)

Home build, has a FN CHF/CL 1/7 Barrel. Loves 75/77gr. Accurate enough to be fun (1.5-2.5moa) with 55/62's.
I gotta say, my friend has a Saint , and it's as precise fitting between upper and lower, as my DD. I think that and my M&P 15 are my favorite mid level ARs in terms of quality. My ex-sniper instructor agrees.

I was looking for th 62gr bthp last night, no luck.

My buddy has a saint and an m&p15, and yes, I'm very impressed with both, especially for the price! If you do end up finding some TAC, it does a little better than the CFE accuracy wise for me.

I have only recently started loading for the 223 and started with Hornady 55gr SP (#2265 and #2266) Loaded over Ramshot TAC. Started with the #2266 with a cannalure as recommended here and loaded up a ladder of 5 loads. Thought I found a node between 22.3gr and 22.6gr. Unfortunately loading 20 each of 5 different loads used up the box of 100 I had. Assumed the #2265 would be about the same, WRONG. The 2266 are boat tails while the 2265 are not. The #2265 did not repeat the same accuracy as the #2266.

While working on those loads I found some Hornady 62gr FMJBT at Midway and bought 500 and now wish I had at least doubled that. The 62gr bullet cut my group size by half! They were that noticeable. With these I loaded 4 groups again .3gr apart starting at 22.5gr of TAC up to 23.4gr. so next is to try and load some at 23.3, 23.4, 23.5 and maybe 23.6 to see what happens.
