Hello,
I recently won an FN Browning model 1922 in an estate auction. I was wondering if anyone could help get me an idea of what year it was manufactured, and it's possible value.

I also have the original box(which is not in great condition)

What a beautiful pistol!! I saw one recently on Gunbroker listed with a starting price of $750. I don't know what it ended up going for. Too rich for me. But it wasn't as nice as yours. I don't see any Nazi-era proof marks on it and it's marked "railway police" which merged into something else in 1939. I'm no expert on dating, so don't take that for fact, but based on those two observations I'd guess early 1930's at least.

I'd be happy to tell you, but it would be deleated as "totally inappropriate," which is probably what will happen to this one too!

I've never seen one with the original box.
I hadn't either until this one. It's what prompted me to try to get it. Lol. I appreciate everyone's replies. I guess I'll have to find an appraiser who can get me more information on it, and give an idea of it's value.

That's a large importer's mark on the right side.

Bahnpolizei is Railway Police, US Zone would mean post war divided Germany under allied control zones, not "West Germany".

The marking itself shows the need for the allies to keep track of lawfully issued arms to German civilians. It's definitely an interesting piece.

The lion over P.V proof mark is Belgian done at Liege for rifled barrels and parabellum pistols.

Nearly the same pistol listed here: http://littlegun.be/arme belge/fn/a fn 1922 gb.htm

Same importer too.

I can't find any info on the importer, just checking that is is stamped: RSI Milford NH ?

I've now seen several of these online and it's ESI Milford NH

Keep an eye out they are apparently not as rare as we thought. One source suggested they are all post war pistols, but I'd like to verify that.

All that are marked for the railway police US zone were made between 1945 and 1949. After digging further this one was manufactured in 1946. And besides importing a large number of these pistols, ESI seems to have disappeared off the map. I can't find any information about them. There were an estimated 40k+ in the US in 1971. The biggest oddity I'm seeing is that I have the box (mostly) intact.

ESI seems to have bought a bunch of them. I've found a number of them online now and they all have the ESI mark.

I haven't found any record of ESI as a modern entity either

ESI seems to have bought a bunch of them.
There's now about 20 of them being auctioned on Gunbroker. When I posted my first post to this thread there was only the one I mentioned in that post.

Bizarre that FN was contracted to make guns when mountains of surplus guns were available.
After WWII the governments were desparate to convert back from war production to civilian, so a huge amount of military supplies was destroyed, much of it having never been used. It seems wasteful, but it was critical to put people back to work.
