Arrows work a little different than boolits. Not a good comparison.

The kid got a nice buck, kinda hard to argue w success. But some will try LOL

Not unethical. Depending on distance and load. It could equal many high power cartridges. Including a 40 yard shot would equal a 400 yard shot with a 45-70. Honestly only thing unethical here is your knowledge of ballistics.

45ACP with the good shot placement, proper bullet and sensible distance should be a great option for whitetail deer.

There was a time, and not so long ago, when I'd have said it was unethical as well. But over the last 10 years or so I've just seen way, way, too many animals killed with cartridges and bullets I'd have considered underpowered just a few years ago. Part of it is better bullets, but most of it is simply that we really need to rethink what is possible.

When I started hunting a 30-06 was considered middle of the road, 270 was borderline and 243 was too small to ethically kill deer. I think that has been proven false.

Arrows work a little different than boolits.

Handgun calibers out of handguns with a double lung shot or heart shot is more similar to archery than to rifle.

The best handgun bullet is a wide flat nose cast bullet that punches one drain hole on the way in and one drain hole on the way out. High velocity is not needed.

Confused handgun hunters select expanding type bullets because they are thinking “rifle”.

The carbine turns an 225/230grain/800fps bullet into one doing 1,000/1100fps.
The carbine means shot placement accuracy at 75 yards comparable to 5-8 yards w/ a hand-held handgun.
The carbine effectively means walking up to the deer and placing a near-contact handgun shot into its chest -- at 75 yards

-'m pretty sure anyone shooting a 1911 would be fine with that for any four (or two) legged animals.
So it's like shooting deer with a 45 Colt. No one argues that is unethical.

On the OP's two posts.
First thing is we don't have enough info. Kept to appropriate range. It will work.
Second. What we read on the internet should be backed up by our real life experience.

The picture tells the story. Out of a rifle, .45 ACP would be traveling @ between 1100 and 1400 fps depending on bullet weight. This would be similar to a .44 mag revolver with a 6" barrel using similar weight bullets. Nuttin' embarrassing or unethical at all.

45acp doesn’t pick up much out of the 16” barrel. I get between 950 and 975 FPS from my HiPoint carbine - 230 grs Berry’s over 7.8 grs HS-6. Doesn’t matter much. Hit deer at 50 yards in right place, deer dead.

People do shoot them with bows.

If required to use straight wall I'd do 44 mag rifle for kids. But anything in the lungs, will do it. I go bigger where i hunt, because of lack of deer, and thick brush. If you are in hunting close in wide open country. or have the abilility to wait, good gun for kids, I suppose. Slower than .357, but heavier and bigger hole.

I certainly do not see it as unethical, especially to the point I would create a thread.
That’s on me. I honestly had no idea that 45 out of a carbine was likely over 1200 FPS. I always heard that many pistols use a fast burning powder so they don’t gain much with additional barrel length.

Yep, depending on the powder you can really get them moving with some extra barrel length. Some faster powders probably don't gain much but
I know that 7.4gr of power pistol under a 230xtp does over 1050 from my 8.5" barrel in my AR.

If it was unethnic why did the state make it legal?
You can't argue with sucess, last year my son shot a 8 point buck with his Kimber 1911 in 10mm and the year before he killed a six pont buck with his Ruger Blackhawn in 44 magnum I gave him.
So is hunting deer with these two handguns unethnical?
No matter what any one does people will have a beef about it. It's human nature.
Congrats to the kid.

Just wanted to see what you guys thought about this. High Point posted this on their Instagram today it’s from the Ohio youth hunt in the past week. In my opinion 45 ACP is very unethical to use against whitetail deer. I would actually be embarrassed to post that pic.

I'll bet you don't think .223 is ethical for deer, either. o_O As long as it was legal in Ohio, and Jaelyn was taught correctly, which it seems evident she was, I seen nothing wrong with using .45 ACP for deer at short range. I commend young Jaelyn for her good aim, and her father for raising her right.

State laws on legal big game calibers are all over the map, barrel length and cartridge length and Muzzle velocity wise, because they are drafted and presented to state legislatures by legislators who may know little about ballistics. In some states, .25 ACP is legal to hunt with in a rifle, because it meets the 'centerfire over .22" requirement many states have. Rarely do states attach a minimum length to the rifle rounds. In my state, WI, it would be legal with a pistol also, because WI only has a barrel length minimum, (5.5"), whereas a .500 S&W Magnum with a 4" barrel would not be legal. Show me the logic there. In neighboring MN, a snubnosed .357 Magnum is legal, because it meets the 1.285" minimum cartridge length for pistols, but an 8/38" .38 Spl. , which would be legal in WI, would not be in MN.
Of course, if one is selective in taking shots, any caliber could do the job. The reason many aren't legal is the method of hunting, how built up an area is, and the fact that there are still hunters out there who take unethical shots, no matter what the caliber used. Substituting power for accuracy is also unethical, and lazy.

I'm not going to dispute the gist of your post but I WILL say that a state's legal stance does NOT always equal ethical. In this particular case, I have no issues with the .45vs deer, but never just assume that legal=ethical.

I know a guy who hunts with a 1911 in 45, he says it works just fine, and no runaways. He's usually close range, but like others have mentioned, a 230gr bullet at 700 fps 50 yards away, is not all that different from a 220gr bullet at 700 fps 100 yards away from a muzzle loader, or even a 147gr ball at 500fps at 100 yards that were used to kill people in a few wars.

.45acp gets a bad reputation because of it being big and slow coming out of a handgun. Put it in a carbine and it builds a bit more speed and is a lot more easily aimed. Add to that that when hunting, bullet selection is better than range blasting ammo. A 4595 in a hunting situation might actually be ideal if hunting thick scrub where a bow might do the trick just as well.

Don't care if it's a suppressed .22.

In Ohio, dead deer is the only good deer. Big caliber, small caliber, run them over with a truck, throw a spear at them, bow and arrow, drop a rock on their head. Don't care, slaughter them all.

I think we all get too tied up in what other people shoot deer with. I’ve killed a pile of deer with a 223 Rem and been chastised for it. The deer never seemed to know they were shot with an under-powered cartridge. Live and let live and let’s worry about what we shoot our own deer with.

Deer are not armored creatures. The reason for a lot of power is basically range.

If you are close enough a 45 carbine would probably do quite well and would work for a small child that can't handle loads of recoil.

It's still subsonic though, I wouldn't take a far shot at all

Says the man from Yakutsk. Most states manage their deer herd well, though some of the states in the Midwest are a little overpopulated, (like OH, and my state, WI) even with all the loss to truck and car bumpers.

Quite a few have seasons that are way too short. Those are the states with the highest instance of deer/vehicle collisions. You would think the insurance companies would lobby for longer seasons.

I think slappy’s second post is an important one from which all of us and the whole internet should learn.
Before we make quick judgements, let’s look into the matters we judge for ourselves.
That’s all from me tonight, happy thanksgiving.

I like his post. He gave an honest opinion. It gives everyone a chance to comment on their thoughts. I have certainly used 45 Colt on hunts with somewhat similar ballistics.
