New S&W Model 28?

View attachment 959669 My recently purchased revolver. Hope I didn’t overpay. It appears to be unfired since the factory. I have a more used 4” version that I picked up at a gun show in 1998. This one cost me almost 4 times what I paid for that one.
Looks like a dash 2; what's the SN# letter and first three digits? If it's an S prefix, it is pre 1969. The diamond stocks (yours is not them) were deleted in 1969, so I'm guessing 1969 or later. Definitely looks unused, no turn ring at all on the cylinder. Not sure what you gave, prices continually spiraling upwards on these older S&W's. The 4th Edition Standard Catalog of S&W says "as new in box" value, meaning unfired since the factory, box and all tools and paperwork, no marks on the gun, is $900, but the 4th Ed. was printed 4 years ago. I gave $1000 for a 1973 6" M28-2 without the box, papers or tools, and with magna stocks, less than a year ago. Does yours have a smooth or serrated trigger?

That's a fine-looking revolver you found.

Yes, it is a 28-2, N517***, serrated trigger. I gave $875, plus $32.50 FFL fee, (also had to drive 400 mile round trip twice to get it, thanks to my state’s stupid gun laws.). I thought it was worth the trips. Wish it would have had the target stocks, but I picked up a set for my 4” 20 years ago for $25 from a Florida gunsmith on the AOL Gun Talk message board. If I decide to shoot it, I could swap the grips. For now, I plan to keep it pristine. I have a nice 6” Ruger GP-100 stainless for range work, along with the 4” Model 28. And if I feel like a little punishment, there is also a 2.25” SP-101 in the safe.
Back in the good old days, I gave $225 for the more used 4”, showed the seller my concealed weapon permit and walked out the door with it. I miss those days. :(

Looks just like the one I got for $275 in 1997- box, tools, everything.

However, mine had the firing pin bushing set too deep into the frame, resulting in primer backout and locking of the cylinder when firing .357's. A local gunsmith fixed it pretty easily.

Something to check...

You almost never pay too much; you merely pay the correct price early.

I got this very early N serial 28-2 in 2017 for $650. It does not appear to have been fired outside the factory, but it had no box or anything else with the revolver.

Like DR505 I have a Model 28 4in---I just put a set of Altamont smooth walnut grips on it---made nice, fit nice and good price. Enjoy it !

Howdy

No, you didn't pay too much. I paid $650 for this Model 28-2 a few years ago, but it is not in as nice shape as yours.

Generally speaking, I don't think the box and the other goodies adds to the value. I can state several examples. That being said, your box and goodies look just about the same as I got when I bought my Model 17-3 in 1975.

That’s a beauty!

Once you get to shooting it I’ll bet you like it so much that even if you paid $150.00 more it would be worth every penny to you.

Let us know how it shoots. :)

Stay safe.

My local dealer had one, in similar condition last week or so that was tagged somewhere north of $1000.00...I want to say $1300.00 but can't swear to that. I'm not sure if they still have it or not. Things don't stay there too long.

If it had been in the range you're talking about, I might have bought it.
