So if I'm actually considering spending close to 1800 on a new 2020 python
But don't really want to spend that much,
Even though the Colt mystique does have its talons in my brain especially as I was raised in Hartford Connecticut,
What other revolver in more like the eight to 1200 dollar price range matches or exceeds it in both function and Gravitas?
I'm thinking some type of original or near original model Smith & Wesson.
But what are your thoughts on something that matches the sheer grandeur and awe of the Colt Python and matches or exceeds it in accuracy and reliability?

A few year back I was jumping back and forth thinking about buying a python, just couldn't justify the nearly 3 grand price tag, ended up buying the above pictured DW 715 as a slightly used but rusted working gun...400.
A little over a grand later I have what I was looking for...
1, awesome looking gun
2, awesome shooting gun
3, DA pulls like butter
4, SA will scare the $&!# out of you( slightly alot less than 2#) :what:(for professionals only, don't use at home)
5, Its a Dan Wesson
Moral of the story? Read above...

Huntolive,

Based on your glowing description of the
Python, I suspect that if you don't buy one
but something else you'll continue to pine
for the big snake.

So get one.

As a long-time double action shooter, my
preference would be a S&W K or L
frame .357. (I have owned a number of
Pythons and shot them extensively.) The
L frame is dimensionally the same as the
Python.

But I still say, get the Python as nothing
else will satisfy your wishes at this time.
There's more to owning a revolver than
just a preference for DA shooting.

For a perspective on DA shooting the
new Python, check out "Shooting the
New Python with Ken Hackathorn" on
You Tube.

A fellow just sold a nearly new 2020 Colt Python 6" for $1450 on another forum. If I had seen the post an hour earlier, I would have bought it. I want one, but not for over $1500.

I wanted one but I refuse to pay msrp or over. I just picked up a 4inch 686 for way less than msrp. Damn fine weapon with a great single action and double action pull. 6 inch is next when I find one at the right price.

Model 27 model 586 model 19 model 66

come to mind if I were to buy a .357 magnum a used one at that not the classic line that Smith is touting now

Here's my take on it. You get a Python because you want a Python. If that's what you want, nothing else will scratch that itch. I know. I "settled" for something "just as good" for about forty years before finally buying a couple of 2020 Pythons.

Are they any better? I doubt it. A Smith and Wesson, a Ruger, even a Taurus will put holes in paper just as well (at least in my hands) but they're Pythons. And that's what I wanted.

Oh...I forgot. What else would I buy in place of a Python. A Smith and Wesson Model 19-9 (one of the "new" Model 19's). I've got one of those too, and I think it might be the best Model 19 I've owned. Fantastic revolver, right out of the box.

If I was going to get something else in a DA revolver in that price range, it'd probably be an older S&W. I've always wanted a 1950 Target .44Spl. Though a few contemporaries qualify. Such as the 29 Classic or DX (full lug).
