Winchester 70s

I’ve been wanting a 70 in either .300wsm or .308win for a few years now, and like many when considering a purchase I check availability now and then. They’ve always been plentiful. I am not looking for anything rare or a pre-64 or anything remotely out of the way. I just want the claw extractor in a featherweight or sporter.

I am finally ready to purchase, but now I can’t find one anywhere. What’s the deal? Is there a problem with Winchester, is this pandemic related, or do people just get way better Christmas presents than I do routinely and I was unaware?

I understand supply and demand and such, but to just drop from the face of the earth like that seems crazy.

Just about everything is sold out everywhere. If you have to get one right now then sure, Gunbroker, but honestly its a seller's market right now. I'd wait.

The model 70's have been manufactured in Portugal for some time now and have never sold in high volume. I don't know how much the Pandemic has effected Portugal, but that could be a problem. I know some scopes made in Japan were unavailable for at least 8 or 9 months and are just now starting to show up again. Japan was really hit hard by the Pandemic and shut down much of their industry. And even when they got back up to speed on production it takes time for products to get across the Pacific and into retailers here.

I think its the Pandemic! But like you, I'm surprised to see it hitting things like the Model 70.

Grabagun also has the M70 FWT in .325 WSM and .300 WinMag.

In .270 or .308, the FWT is probably fine. In .300 WinMag? Probably not gonna get shot very much at my house.

The Portugal plant may be shut down due to the virus. Anyway, they are good looking rifles and I don't have a problem per se with overseas guns. I own Brownings, Uberti, and Franchi. Somehow, though, it just seems like sacrilege to make the "rifleman's rifle" outside of the US. Anyway, now is not the time to be buying any gun. It is a great time to be selling guns. Prices are stupid high.

My nearest Cabela's (Lacey, WA) had several in stock as of two weeks ago. Including a few Super Grades in maple and some Featherweights.

As a side note of encouragement, I went to the range yesterday with my M70 EW in .308. I literally shot a 5 count group at 200 yards that had a 1/2” spread - 3 of the 5 rounds were touching each other. This rifle does not like factory rounds but it really likes the hand load that I developed for it - I amazed myself also as I have old eyes and 200 yards is a good long distance shot for me. It is a shooter!

The reason for either .300wsm or .308win is simple and may seem silly, but I don't want to have to buy stuff to reload in another chambering. I already have a .300wsm (in a Remington 700 that's been a problem from day one) and a .308win (in a fantastic savage 10) so I figured I would get the rifle in one of those chamberings. Thanks for the advice, y'all.

Actually, Cabela's, Bass Pro Shop and Sportsman's Warehouse still show the pre-pandemic prices on all their Winchester Model 70s.

Bolt and lever-action rifle prices haven't gotten "stupid high" yet. Maybe at some local retail outlets, or it could be regional.

If you want o buy one now, go for it. I picked up another Featherweight a few weeks ago at the same price it was 18 months ago.

Just my opinion, but I don't think you can go wrong with even the new production Model 70s. They look good, shoot great, sure doesn't look like any corners have been cut in the production values of these rifles. I'm a huge fan.

I meant guns in general, particularly used guns. And, my local Sportsman's WH is empty for all intents and purposes. As far as the model 70 is concerned, I just took a look at Gunbroker.com. They do have significant listings of new model 70 rifles. I scrolled through a few pages and the majority of the prices were north of $1000. A significant number were north of $1200. One featherweight caught my eye at $1485. I am sorry, but that is stupid money to me...

What? Where was this? I just picked up a new Featherweight for $849 at my local Cabela's a few weeks ago. Didn't have to order it, they had a bunch in stock. And my Sportsman's Warehouse continues to get bolt action rifles in stock; right now, I'm going back and forth between a Tikka and a CZ...

The $1200-plus rifles should be the Super Grades.
