Woman visits the old neighborhood, gunned down in what appears to be a random attack:

This article says she was living in Atlanta and was visiting her old neighborhood in Philadelphia. There isn't enough information to know if she was the intended victim or if it was mistaken identity.

I don't know how you protect yourself from an attack like that outside of following the good advice of not going to bad places.

I'm not sure there's any solution besides avoiding the area. If that's where her family is, then avoidance is more difficult. If it was her old domain, you'd think she'd have been aware if it has a bad reputation. I do wonder if she became comfortable in the familiarity or was just oblivious. Like when people who grew up poor didn't even know they were poor, because that's all they ever saw.

I cant speak to this particular person and their experience but I can relay mine. I have family in the bad parts of the local big city, I refuse to let area dictate my seeing family, that does mean that kiddos are placed on increased commands to stay close to me and that does mean that sometimes a couple more mags or speedloaders come with me. Visiting grandma shouldnt feel like Im back in the service with a bunch of gear but it does, to my kids its just visiting grandma and their uncle, even if they think dad is being more protective than usual around the neighborhood its for good reason.

I repeat this often enough, avoidance of stupid people, places and things solves a lot of potential problems. If you choose to place yourself in situation's that are problematic, negative outcomes are problematic!

I'll bet that each of these thugs had rap sheets a mile long.
I'll bet that each of these thugs had records/conviction for assaults, robbery, attempted murder (if not actual murder) -- multiple times before.
I'll bet that each of these thugs had been released w/o cash bail....

If you want to know how to prevent these situations....
Deal w/ the cause -- and do it without compassion for anyone but the victim.
... with prejudice.

Either do that... or quit complaining.
In a democracy you have no one to blame but yourself.

It may not have been the place she thought it was, things change, what was "tough" when she was growing up there may not be now. Or, she thought the was still a "part" of the neighborhood but wasn't. Or, she had left a lot of hard feelings there and people took it out on her when she returned. You can never go home again, sadly real in this case.

There were many places I would go decades ago as a younger me but I would NOT go today. I, and the place, have changed a lot.

I had the same problem. I was in Manhattan on business after 40 or so years away from my old neighborhood in Brooklyn. I wanted to see and asked a beat cop about the area. He said that I should not go there on my own, on foot. So I got a cab to drive me around. Circled the old house, high school, etc. The area was covered with graffiti, no old business still stood. Was a touch sad but I needed to do it.

Social media broadcasts a single voice to countless people. In this case, her broadcast was heard by someone with an old grudge.

This was not random, but orchestrated. My opinion, of course.

The news report says she was shot multiple times with casings being found just inches from her body. Just doesn't sound like a random robbery gone wrong. Being shot multiple times and at close range sounds like the shooters had a grudge against her and they really wanted her dead.

There is really no telling these days. It has been several years ago now. Several high school kids not too far from here had a house party while the parents were away. After everyone went to sleep one of the guests that had left came back & went through the house killing everyone. When asked why he did it he said he wanted to know what it would be like to kill someone. It would be nice if we could figure out reasons things happen & figure out ways to avoid them happening but reality is anything can happen anywhere & there might not be anything we can do about it. There are things we can do or not do to lessen the odds but we can not eliminate danger entirely.

Most of the places where I used to live have improved dramatically since I left.
A home that I picked up for $17,500 just changed hands for $400,000, for example.
I don't think that my leaving caused ALL of the improvement, though... .
Anyway, I've got no reason to go back to any of my old neighborhoods.
All of the old family or friends are either dead or no longer friends of mine.

My sargent said it best " 90% of murders are done by someone you know. 10% wrong place wrong time". Not much can be done. Im a firm believer that when it's your time it's your time. That being said we can choose to try and stay away from troublesome places. Sometimes trouble travel's.

I don't suppose it ultimately matters but it sure looked like a hit. They were there to kill someone, maybe her or maybe they didn't care. There might have been some history there. We probably will never know.

Wrong time, wrong place, sure.

Wrong time and place to be slowly crossing the street apparently alone, looking at your phone, with zero situational awareness.

Then again from the video the murderers acted immediately and I am not sure what anyone, armed or not, could have done even with good situational awareness. Maybe wear body armor, be armed and travel only with armed friends? I don't know.

I do think behavior like this, on both sides, is a sign of the times. Life sure is cheap these days.

Yeah, every time and place is the wrong time and place to have zero situational awareness. Maybe in your bed at night, unavoidable there. We wargame every situation that we think of, but some situations are probably unwinnable; we can only win by not playing.
