Why do people chintz out on scopes?

No experience with the scope. The company operates out of Slovenia. Now, I've been there, loved the region, the people, the food and drink. But I've never heard of the company, and absent any credible (verifiable) reviews from U.S. customers, I'd be a little leery of ordering from one of the former Com-bloc countries...

I do have to say that when I started this thread, it was in no way intended to be critical of, or disrespectful to, those who choose not to buy (or cannot afford to) or use higher-end (expensive) optics -- I really wanted to hear opinions and thought-processes from both sides. I found almost all of the responses well-reasoned (and trust me, I understand the economic side of it; I had little disposable income for many years and then put two children through college), many quite interesting, some enlightening, and a few quite entertaining. My thanks to all those who've responded.

I know nothing about the vendor. The scope? It truly doesn’t get any better than Schmidt & Bender. That’s the definition of an alpha scope.

According to people I respect the S&B Polar T96 is the absolute best low light scope on the market today. The Klassik has been around for awhile but IMO is still in the top 10% of all scopes made today.

Since having both corneas and lens replaced i find my dependence on optics has really decreased, Almost better than 20-20 even the original 3.5 PUs i use on resnipering 91/30s are more than clear for me.

I do not know if I saw this in this thread or another. Has anyone had experience with this scope? Has anyone in the US used this supplier?
The Klassiks are the current production versions of long-time S&B model series, available in variable and, like in this case, fixed power configuration. The 6x42 has been a popular all-rounder as a compromise for all hunting, particularly before variables became common. The "Hungaria" designated scopes are assembled in Hungary: https://revivaler.com/schmidt-and-bender-hungaria-rifle-scopes

This supplier has been around for a while now. It's one of the better known sites for good prices in quality optics inside the EU, along with optics-world.nl (which sells that same scope for €511.57 tax free for export, btw) and a number of others. Remember to include shipping and import duties to the US when you compare prices to avoid unpleasant surprises.

Good to know, both about the site and the fees and tariff.

Compared to my 700(on sale) dollar zeiss..... surprisingly close optically, turrets are squishier tho.
Ive actually GOT My FFe1 on the rifle the Zeiss would normally ride on.
I just mounted one on my new Rem Model 7 and ordered another for a Weatherby.

Yeah as optics for general use go, ive found the Burris to generally be a solid option. Ive never tried the droptines but, the other Burris ive used have all be really sweet.
Bought a few of the Pentax badged Burris before other folks realized what they were. Those were a steal

In my experience, saying "I can't afford it" is usually wrong, it's closer to say "that's not a priority for me". I know people that buy cheap scopes that own expensive cars. I understand there are very poor people out there that cannot afford the scopes. I get that. There are far more people out there that choose to put their money elsewhere.

This is exactly right. Unless you are quite wealthy, you can't buy the best house, the best furniture, the best vehicle, the best tools, the best electronics, the best fly rod, the best firearms, the best scope, etc., etc. Some of those things have to be a compromise because everyone runs out of money at some point.

When I see people at the range with a >$40K truck and a $200 scope, I just have to remind myself that everyone's priorities are different and that's OK. It's their money and none of my business what they do with it. It doesn't mean that I understand it.

Also exactly right. And you never know if those people have a Nightforce on an Accuracy International in the truck as they're sighting in a rifle for a friend. :D

Having used some really expensive scopes and some less expensive scopes I’ve found that price isn’t a good indicator of quality anymore. Why spend 600 when I can spend 300 for nearly the same results?

Caveat: I don’t shoot much past 4-500m

All who have gone on an African Safari, please raise your hands... I'm not trying to be smart, and I'm really glad that you've been on African Safaris, would be an awesome experience, however like @chicharrones stated totally different animal (pun intended). If I were spending $20,000+ (travel, tags, PH fees, room and board) on an African Safari my rifle and glass combo probably would be in the $5,000+ range.
In a situation like that, 2 is 1 and 1 is none no matter the quality/price.

A Burris is one of the scopes I recently had issues a M-Tac 4-14X, you would dial it and it might take a couple shots before the POI would move.
Not to condemn Burris everybody has a bad day.
To quote myself from another thread.
"After working in manufacturing (aircraft) for over 30 years I'm amazed we have anything more complicated than a hula hoop mass produced."

Resized_20200818_165239.jpeg I bought my second Sightron for my KIDD SuperGrade 10-22. First one was their S-Tac 4x20x50 with 30mm tube. Replaced it with this little SVSS 10X50X60 with 34 mm tube. Resized_20200818_165239.jpeg Having Tony Mele build a stock for it. Should be here soon, after bedding/fitting.
