I’ve handled and fired several 1911’s over the years, but have never owned one. After giving thought to what I liked, preferred, wanted, etc. in a 1911 I came to the realization that a basic “mil spec” type pistol suits me just fine.

Was preparing to purchase one, when I was surprised and given one as a gift. It’s exactly what I was planning on getting. A parkerized Springfield Mil Spec.

Finish is a nice, evenly applied and dark parkerized finish. It’s soaked up a few coats of oil, and looks perfect.

The fit is not what I’d call loose, nor is it overly tight. In my opinion, it’s just about perfect. Takedown was no problem.

Trigger has a slight amount of take up, with a nice clean break. The safety was a bit on the stiff side but seems to have smoothed up after some use.

The factory mag inserts/ejects smoothly. No issues in the first 80 rounds with the supplied mag.

In terms of functionality, it’s only got 80 rounds of assorted ammo down range. No failures to include Sig, Hornady, and Federal Hollow Points.

In terms of extraction, I’ve loaded the pistol with a single round, dropped the mag, and fired. Repeated this several times. Each time, the pistol fired and cleanly ejected the spent casing at the 4 o clock position and landed about 8 feet away. A good start in my opinion.

The pistol fires to point of aim at 30 feet. Using two hands, and taking my time, it is grouping about 2” and I’m sure it would tighten some if I shot it off a bench.

Personally, I find the steel 3 dot sites easy to acquire and use. They’ll be staying.

So far, so good. I’d like to put at least 500 rounds through it to get a better sense of reliability with a broad selection of ammo. Assuming it continues to perform as it has, I could very well see another in the future.

I have the very similar Defender model. Perfect for my needs. Basic 1911, reliable, affordable, and free of all the frills. One of my favorite pistols.

I also have the Defender model and like it. I was looking for a CZ97B, but when they were available the price was more than I could afford. The Defender is my first "1911" style pistol, it feels and aims great, and shoots anything so far.

I have a Springfield like yours (except stainless) and I can guarantee you that your gun will only get better with shooting and time. Enjoy!!

My first carry gun was born as a Springfield Armory GI model. I had to have my gunsmith tinker with it initially, but it's been fantastic since it got back from him. That was about 10 years ago. If memory serves, the Mil Spec came with the lowered and flared ejection port, which the GI model lacked. In any event, congratulations! I don't shoot anything as well as I shoot my 1911. There's also very little that I enjoy shooting as much as my 1911.

Oh, and no 1911 thread is complete without pictures. :D

I've had a stainless and parked versions and both ran 100%.

Springfield ran a deal on the "defender " 1911, a milspec model. Everything you need and nothing you don't.

White dot sites work for me, 25 yards no problem. Enough of a beavertail to avoid bite not enough to be obnoxious or slow my draw. Lowered ejection port, feeds every bizarro jhp I've tried.

I'm a fan!

Sounds like a good, solid 1911. And to get it as a gift is even better. Enjoy it and give us an update a few thousand rounds down the road.

Many people seem to think they immediately need to tinker with a 1911. A good stock 1911 that works is nothing unusual, and nice to have. I have a couple and they have been running just fine for decades....clean them and swap out worn springs.

Mine is reliable and the autoloader I most often shoot at 50 yards. The only malfunctions I've had were from reloading errors or work-ups. It has run with everything from 150 gr swc to 250 gr xtp. My personal favorite are light-loaded 230s with a 12-lb recoil spring.

Mine is a Defender Mil Spec too. Pardon me if the Defender is a different model than the non Defender Mil Spec. No misrepresentation was meant. I assumed they’re the same except for grips.

When I asked the MEUSOC Pendleton Armorer to build a brand-new MEUSOC 1911 for me and what I should start with - he immediately and with no reservation said the S.A. bone-stock 1911.

High praise, that.

I had thought about having him tune-up one of my righteous G.I. 1911A1s but then thought better and asked his opinion.

To paraphrase "Jeremiah Johnson": "He settled for a S.A., but damn, it was a *genuine* 1911A1... you couldn't go no better."

Todd.

I think you're right. Im not sure if there is a difference short of the cardboard box and single magazine. Being that I never use the case my guns come in and have half a dozen magazines anyway, I'll take the cost savings ;)

I like mine too. I use Chip McCormick 8rd Shooting Star mags. I put a flat MSH in it from Brownells and a Greider Precision V Series trigger also from Brownells in it. It is a good one. It is a superb shooter and it's what I'm holding to the left in my avatar.

The buddy I bought it off of had it and a Colt SS Gold Cup NM he was selling. The S.A. shot better for me than the Colt and it was a no-brainer to go with it. It was the cheaper option as well.......
