Smith and Wesson 1076

they seem to be collectible. i see them disappear quickly if priced reasonable to even a bit high. meaning even outside of gun runs like we have been seeing.

its 10mm and 3rd generation. not much to not like.. if salvageable and priced right id grab it, assuming ya like 10mm.

They are very good guns, I had one for quite a while just didn't shoot it much a decided to basically trade it for a beautiful nickel 39-2 and ~$400

The weight it posses really helps to reduce the recoil felt with the 10MM. I had a 1006 and carried it a few times in the field but the weight was just a bit too much on the hip. Ended up selling and moving the G20. The trade off was the recoil due to lighter weight with the Glock

I've owned a couple 1076s. They are very robust, reliable, almost "bullet proof" pistols IMHO. The S&W 10XX series of pistols can handle the "real" 10MM ammunition, e.g., the old Norma, current Buffalo Bore, Underwood, and equivalent reloads without issue. My 1076s, with their 4 1/4" barrels did suffer some velocity loss as compared with their 5" barreled model 1006 and 1026 counterparts. Since they were introduced, I've owned at least a half dozen S&W 10MM semi-autos. Also had a Glock, Colt Delta and a Kimber in 10MM. The S&Ws remain my favorite 10

I owned a 1076 for over a decade. I sold it because I got out of 10mm. It is just a superb 10mm pistol. Very good DA/SA trigger and utterly reliable (like all 3rd gen S&W's). The only downside is the scarcity and price of spare mags and grips. Prices are between $80-100/mag IIRC and grips are made of unobtainium

What's your side of the trade?

Have your man ensure that the recall has been performed for the de-cock or factor that into the trade in any case.

Finding out that it was a righteous FBI gun would add cool-points for me.

These are moving into the collectable category these days. Mine had acquired enough value that I worried about scratching it, and decided it was no longer fun. I sold mine and bought two nice new automatics with the proceeds. But if this one is rusty, maybe it is just a shooter, and you can get a good deal. If so, it is a great 10mm because of the weight.

Update: Dropped it off at the gunsmith today. He gave it a once over and thinks it is probably good on the inside. It has 2 magazines with it. Did check and it has the 2 dots showing the recall was done. Thank you for all the tips and information.

I have a chance to trade for a S&W 1076. Problem is it was not properly stored and has quite a bit of rust on the non stainless parts that I can see. What is the prevailing view on these semi autos? I know there were not a ton made. I am taking it to a gunsmith to have him let me know if it is ok to shoot and the cost to repair it.

If I ever get my hands on a 1076, I'll pop for the *letter* too to see it was an honest FBI/Cop gun or not.

I had a 1006 that I had to sell when I fell on hard times. Congrats on your new purchase.

I located a mint 1006 on gb a few years back and picked it up with the idea that it would be a collectible for me. It is the same size as a 4506 that I carried professionally many moons ago but unfortunately no longer have. I know I overpaid for it at the time (the price would be cheap now) but it appeared to have never been fired except for the proof load at S&W. You’ll love it.

Have you contacted the Mothership (aka Smith & Wesson) to see if they still support the Big-10? I’d be willing to bet they still do. Might be a great place to start. I’ve had very good success with them in the past servicing guns and re-finishing.

I had a 1076 for a while, it carried very nicely in a Don Hume pancake holster. I acquired a couple dozen magazines for it as well.

I did not get the letter, I just called S&W and the customer service rep looked up the s/n and said it was sold to the VA State Patrol. They may or may not do that for you.

I love the 3rd gen Smiths, but even though I carried it from time to time, I was never comfortable knowing it wasn't supported by S&W any more. When the price of 10mm Smiths and magazines went through the roof, I sold it off.

Only thing better than the 1076 is a 1086, had one and let it go, wish I still had it

OP, here is a SMOKING deal on 1076 mags over on ARFCOM.

I think it would be worth having it refinished. Not a cheap option but considering it's a collectors gun, I would expect an outfit like Fords Plating would do a real nice job on it. Just a suggestion.
