This situation could've been easily dealt with if he didn't just sit there. Didn't need to speed off at a high rate of speed, but could've simply started moving, picking up speed.

Don't think a gun would've been the first choice, or necessary at all

I suppose the lesson to be learned here is to use avoidance whenever possible, even though these people were obviously surprised. I take avoidance to a different level by avoiding places such as ny. Not to trash any specific part of our great Nation, I just prefer to not place myself in an area where risk is higher, I'm unable to be as prepared as I feel I should be allowed to be, and I truly feel as though I'm not welcome there by a large segment of the population. People who act like these animals certainly aren't welcome in my small town, and behavior like that just won't be tolerated.

I watched the video. The driver had no place to go. Welcome to NYC traffic.

If you read the article, the driver said he sat there so he wouldn't hurt anyone. He only moved because they broke the windshield. I've driven in NYC traffic, it's not as bad as people think. He had plenty of space to move.

" a gun" would not likely have been legal !

That is NYC and to get a CCW there is about like knowing the pope on a first name basis.

In fact ,I doubt that would be good enough.

A city of approx 8 to 10 MILLION,guess how many CCW's are issued to citizens [ NOT counting retired cops ].

And you cannot own a long gun without a permit either,a bit easier to get BUT do not carry that loaded ever.

So fact is that "shooting your way out" would be a horrible idea [ and not legal use of deadly force either ] .

Best bet would be to keep going as your vehicle is getting damaged either way = IF you leave,at least you stand a better chance of staying alive !

That isn't the point. Everyone here is aware of NYC's draconian laws, the OP was just addressing the situation in general.

Really ?.

I doubt that many ever actually heard of the "Sullivan" laws that are ONLY for the city of NY.

And since a gun was mentioned,I was thinking not all are as well read as you.

So please let me mention that which I will not 'presume' all know !.

Here's how some folks handle it:

Yep, some parts of the US are going to wind up like Johannesburg- where you need an armored Mercedes with grenade launchers and smoke generators to enter........if you want to leave alive.

Im not sure how to link it, but check out the Pentagon training video "Megacities Urban Future: The Emerging Complexity"

Exactly.

... Not to trash any specific part of our great Nation..

Aawwhh, go ahead; New York City officials routinely trash talk the free states. A couple years ago, NYPD staff directly and publicity blamed Georgia’s “lax” gun laws for NY criminals ability to obtain handguns. It seems Georgians could responsibly handle such easy access to firearms without descending into criminality.

Truth is that dense, huge urban centers generate their own peculiar problems (just like sparse, rural areas have their particular challenges). Traffic jams and mob behavior are two of NYC’s particular problems; it’s unfortunate - although not unusual - that the situation developed for the victims. The Branca article is excellent.

It was a BMW, but that's not the point, obviously.

Unfortunately, all large urban areas experience this type of behavior, not just NYC.

We can all be Monday morning quarterbacks, but when you're surrounded by a violent mob creating loud noises by pounding on your car, you might tend to become disoriented. Luckily, the violence stopped, at least for them.

Next victim wasn't so lucky. I don't think the pair in the first car would have been, but the cab driver would definitely have have been justified in using deadly physical force, having been removed from his vehicle by a mob. Unfortunately, it might have been too late, physically unable, to take action at that point.

We simply avoid population centers. Our county of residence is rural. We were selective when relocating to present residence. The local broadcast news sources confirm that shooting incidents are more common in population centers especially in the economically depressed areas. The other thing is we blend in thus we don't display wealth that some individual's do thus we look like unlikely targets of opportunity.

I'm guessing if that guy moved an inch and bumped one of the little darlings he would be sued immediately.

In Denver last summer protesters tried to shut down I270 but a couple of innocents unknowingly entered the highway and were immediately threatened. They wisely didn't stop as one of the protesters was armed and opened fire. The miscreant missed the Jeep but managed to hit two of his fellow protesters. The cops investigated the Jeep driver for hate crimes but backed off after a few weeks. No matter what action taken there's a good chance drivers will be in trouble.

In that NYC swarming, my assessment is the driver would have been best served by leaning on the horn and then driving through at 15-18 mph. Even if he had to sideswipe a few parked cars or whatever to keep moving. Slow enough to give thugs time to jump away yet fast enough few would be athletic enough to chase the SUV.
