Breathing life back into old milsurps

Well, this has become my main hobby. Buying a cheap, trashed and neglected old battle relic and turning it into something beautiful again. Its extremely satisfying. The problem lately is the cheap. Even the worst specimens are still $200+ where I live. Puts a damper on things. Heres some pics of a swede, chilean, a czech, and a turks aftermarket stock. I generally just refinish/checker the stocks, turn down the bolts, drill/tap for scope, and sand/cold blue the rest. Im very much interested in getting set up for real blueing and cerakote.

I went thru a few years of tinkering hard on Milsurps. I prefer to start with an already "defaced" (I have no issue cutting up pretty much anything, but others really value the original configurations. Thus I prefer to send along those that arnt already molested or are restorable) sporter.... preferably one without TOO many holes in the wrong places.

I just realized ill need to sit at my pc to post relevant pictures and descriptions lol.

I had a 1903 before any of these guns listed but its pictures died with Photobucket. The gun was already nicely sporterized in a bishop stock when I got it, including a professionally installed bolt handle and low throw safety. All I did was have our local smith screw in a new rem 2 grove barrel and drill and tap for a set of vintage scope mounts. Gave that gun to a friend of mine 10 years ago or so.

index.php

Gun went thru a few iterations and was one of my first "major" projects. started life as a common 91/30 eventually ended up as the ubiquitous ATI stocked Mosin sporter.

index.php

A different and less heavily modified 91-30Mosin, rounds fired were 174SMKs.

Both of those Mosins actually shot SMKs REALLY well. The full sporter job would hold MOA +/-

Next up are the Arisakas

First one I got was a midwar T-99, already wearing a fajen stock. I modified the bolt to turned down and drilled and tapped for a scope mount. also added a thumb stud on the safety so I could use a thumb to get it on and off.

Next was actually THIS thing.....

This one got a lot of work, including sitting at the smith's place for a long while before i got it back.
Stock went away, so did the barrel. bought all the parts to put the bolt back together stripped it and hot blued it, then sent it to shaw for a 6.5-284 barrel and having the action tapped for a savage scope mount.
It had a couple stock changes and got some random add-ons as well as a Timney trigger.

Bought this next one off Gunbroker, but from a local seller. This was already in 6-284, with a fajen stock and bent bolt handle, as well as leupold mounts.

all I really did to that one was install a new extractor, re-profile the bolt handle a bit to give it the lines rather than being a lumpy....lump, and installed a savage centerfeed mag box so it would actually FEED the rounds i wanted to use.

I'll contribute. Not quite a refurb, but more of a transformation into something I wanted but could not find, nor afford when I saw it.
It was a 1916 Spanish Mauser originally. Scrubbed receiver, run of the mill when they were plentiful. So, with help from my brother in law's father, with a barrel kit from Numrich, and other CETME parts,
I was able to turn it into an FR-7, chambered in 7.62x39. Its pretty fun to shoot, though I cannot use stripper clips in it. Its one of a kind though, and it goes well with my Star Super. :)

Mosin, how does the numrich 7.62x39 mag filler thingy feed? Been curious about that option for a while.
The filler block is positioned in the back of the magazine. Feeds pretty well, though not fast action. Some soft point brass I have does feed well, and I only feed it brass 7.62x39.

If you want more in depth pictures, I can post them tomorrow. Just let me know.

I've always wanted to get ahold of a beat up rust bucket milsurp (Mauser 98, Lee Enfield SMLE MKIII, Mosin Nagant M91/30,ect) and make a hunting arm out of it. So what are ya'll's examples of milsurps you've made shine again ?
My ugly as sin mosin model New England hunter.

I’m thinking I’ll eventually put it in an ATI or something (the stock on it is an original that was cut down) and get a new bolt handle for it. @LoonWulf where did you get that bolt for yours? I like the “flat to stock” look.

Here is pictures of the receiver, etc.. You can see the plastic block is colored black here, but when you get the kit, its white. I am able to load 5 rounds of 7.62x39 in the magazine box easily. It feeds well, but of the two rounds included in the pictures, the domed head I can only feed one at a time. It gets jammed in the receiver if I try to load it with multible rounds in the magazine. Hope this helps.

Nice whiteface there,

My older brother and it seems like everyone back in the fifties sporterized cheap and common surplus rifles then. My brother prefered .303 British guns for the fast smooth action but lots of guys liked Mausers.

Made it from 5/16" stainless rod and a ball bearing. It was actually for a different project and just go stuck on there.

As few months ago I saw a badly sporterized Lee Enfield No. 4, Mk1 at my local FFL dealer. I mean I could still see the saw marks where a previous owner cut off the end of the lower forearm. But the barrel and action metal seemed recoverable. After ordering new forearms, barrel bands, etc., I spent too much but the end result looked okay. I was able to use the original butt stock.

It laid around our shop for years and nobody seemed to know where it came from. I asked my uncle if I could have it to try and sporterize and he said have at it. It still had a few rounds left, still in the stripper clips. I burned them up in a local gravel pit then proceeded with my plan. With the help from an old time basement gun smith I knew I got it rebarreled to 25-06 and the straight bolt cut and rewelded then drilled and tapped for scope mounts. I bought a Bueller safety ,a Timney trigger, new for 35 bucks! and a Fajen stock. Did a lot of filing, sanding and polishing then sent it out to get blued. The Stock was a 98% inletted one but with the medium weight barrel it took a lot of work to fit but I finally got it done. It shoots sub MOA and I was a pretty happy kid in my early 20s. All in all I concluded that monetarily I’d of been better off buying a rifle but the experience and satisfaction of making something out of the beat up old Mauser was definitely worth it.

Need I say more. No 5 Roller that had a shot out barrel, part burned stock and other issues. Now its a 45 Colt Single Shot with a heavy barrel. Made the wood myself. (well I didn't grow the tree part). And the brass buttplate that I made out of a brass scrap piece which I got from someone at Revere Copper and Brass.

Here’s a No4 Mk1 that I restored a while back.
The stocks that was on the rifle was hacked up pretty bad in an attempt to make it a sporter. Lucky for me, the metal parts had not been altered and I got the rifle cheap.
I was able to find a stock set with all the hardware, that came off of a demilled rifle.
Wit some cleaning and some TLC it came out nice.
