Ruger Am Ranch is just stupid loud

I hunt with a 458 Socom that I struggled with the idea of using a brake on. Don’t want any more noise,I don’t hunt with earplugs,but I was concerned with recoil. Wound up using a soft pad and a blast can instead of a brake. It’s much more pleasant to shoot than my other,brake equipped ARs,noise wise,and the recoil is not bad with the pad. The can I found on EBay, I think they listed it as a blast forwarder,and they were available in several different threads,and cheap too.
 
I really wanted one for a bit, I want a bolt action .223 and it was very hard to walk away from one the other day at my LGS when I told him I was looking for a RA Predator .223/5.56 with the longer bbl he said he would sell the ranch to me for $350 which sounded like a good deal. I have enough 16" bbl 5.56, I would like an 18"-20" bolt action that will accept 5-10rd AR pattern mags.

First shot at a deer had my ears ringing for several minutes and had me very worried it wasn't going to go away this time. I spent a little under $50 on a pair of walker electronic earmuffs and while I wouldn't wear them without plugs on a long range day they are perfect for firing a couple shots in the field without losing your hearing. Bonus is they keep your ears warm.

If it still bothers you with ear protection I'd try the compensators listed above but I have no personal experience with them.

How do those electronic muffs work. Is it crisp clear natural sound until you crack off a shot or does it take a lil getting used to

I bought a fairly inexpensive set and I would say the sound quality is good, but not quite like natural hearing. You can crank them up and hear noises much quieter than the naked ear picks up, but there comes a point when you start to get a background hum. If you keep the volume at a reasonable level and the wind isn't excessive they are great. My biggest complaint is sometimes if you have a hood or a high collar on your coat you can rub the volume knobs but for the most part they are well out of the way. I have not tried the higher end models to see if the sound quality is any different.

I wear mine on the range over a set of foam plugs if I am helping new shooters out and need to hear them asking questions, and I wear them on every hunt by themselves, even squirrel or rabbit where I'm using a rimfire. I think they are a game changer as far as being able to protect your hearing and not compromising the hunt.


Edit- just grabbed them to check the model. I have the Walker "Alpha Muffs" and I'm really happy with them for what I spent. If I had it to do over I might look into a higher end pair now that I know how much I use them, but if these died tomorrow I'd have no reservations buying another pair just like them either. They're pretty low profile and don't bother me shooting rifles like some of the larger muffs I've tried do.

Thanks for the rundown on that. I'm gonna have to try a inexpensive pair like those and if I don't like em I'll buy a better set for hunting and use the others for range use or whatever.

I'm not crazy about the idea of a pair of muffs on my head though, I'm weird about my ears but also don't wanna destroy my hearing. I find if I'm hunting and there's no wind or leaves rustling, birds chirping, squirrels chattering around I start to go a lil nuts in the dead silence. Like the term "deafening silence". I will have to try them out in any case and check out some options. Thank you
 
Hope they work for you. I didn't think I would like them, but I also have done a lot of hearing damage over the years running tractors, saws and what not that I occasionally get ear ringing anyhow. The day I shot the deer and my ears started ringing loudly and it didn't go away for a minute or more scared me pretty bad. I am better about using plugs or earmuffs in my shop and on tractors now in addition to when I'm hunting.

Ditto. Everyone thought I was silly for sticking napkin pieces in my ears on demo days, now they just say “what?” when I talk to them. I wish I had learned even sooner...:(

Likewise, I took a while getting used to reusing the foam plugs on my Walker’s RTZ electronic plugs. A box of alcohol wipes and plenty of replacement tips fixed that. And now, I LOVE THEM! I can not say enough good about them. Muffs over them when the big bores come out, and I’m am great!

It may be weird to have something hang on your neck, though. I wear so much other gear I don’t notice. Walkers makes great stuff. Hearing is valuable enough to warrant the expense.:thumbup:

I am really pissed at gun buyers right now. I got a call from a douchebag acquintance today telling me how happy he is with his $400 Mossberg 500 purchase.
He did turn me on to an estate sale of guns, though. We'll see what happens if lowball offers get accepted.

Yep, same here. People looked at me strange like I couldn't take the noise like a man or something when I'd grab a piece of napkin and slightly wet it with my water bottle for impromptu shooting or construction noise or whatever. Like, nope. I value my hearing and didn't like the results of being deaf for days after shooting without ear pro. Knowing that it does permanent damage. Something like, once you get over a certain decibal threshold you will never hear in that frequency again, the ear just dies a lil each time.... like the guy in black hawk down. "Whaaaaat!!!!!

My Mini 30 was fairly loud, but I always wear the large black plastic hearing protectors. It sounded just like my SKS and any other 7.62x39 rifle I own.

JCooperfan1911 made me wonder, are you using only ear plugs?:scrutiny:

"Loud" is my AMD-65 (by TGI) with its 12" barrel :) and the required, welded (or pinned) 4.25" barrel extension.
