I’m Scared (.22 Price)

Back in the late 1980s when I was a teen we used to buy the milk carton of Remington lr with 500 rounds for $5.00 and go shooting all day. Its a shame that in todays political environment kids doing what we used to will likely be answering an officers questions because some idiot sees them with a gun and gets scared.

Just to be complete, if in 1980 you purchased a brick (500 rounds) for $5.00 then adjusted for inflation that would be today $15.76. Some bricks today have 525 rounds or more and considering everything I would be okay with $20.00, but for a 333 pack, meh. You have not been on a fixed income for the last 40 years have you ;)? But now that I am on a fixed income, I am glad I bulked up my ammo supplies when I was not :)! BTW, it is not just politics driving the ammunition prices and scarcity (thus far), this time has been a perfect storm with politics just riding the crest.

I didn't mean that's all I shoot, I reload & have stocked up on my reloading supplys. In fact the one caliber I don't reload I stocked up on quite a few years ago at lower cost that you can buy .22lr for today. I bought this stack of 5.45x39 for about 9 cents per round when a local place was going out of business.

This is just one of the many calibers I have to play with. My kids will probably be shooting the ammo long after I'm gone.

That 5.45mm is a wicked little round.

Me and a friend (now passed away sadly) once used an AK-74 and fired on a heavy steel lock box. It didn’t seem to do much but poke small holes in the safe and we weren’t sure if it went through. Well on the back of the safe were huge golf ball sized jagged holes. I’d hate to be hit with one and the recoil is very pleasant.

Was browsing on ammoseek and found this:

The very cheapest .22s on the net are $0.35 a shot.

This is over TEN TIMES as costly as this time last year. I have enough .22s to last the rest of my days but I feel extremely sad the young men coming up will never be able to experience the joy of plinking away the afternoon for pocket change.

This is depressing me terribly and this price is even before the upcoming change in command which could bring even more demand. I am praying to God this will end and future generations can enjoy a .22 that is cheap to fire.

God bless all and stay safe during these awful times.

-Frank
I wouldn't say never. When this generation of gun enthusiasts passes on, there will be less and less demand - particularly for .22 ammo. That's my guess.

When people freaked out in 2013, it took a year or two for things to calm down and come back, but they did. And they will again.

People really need stop freaking out.

Stepped into a Sprotsmans Warehouse today for the first time in a LONG time. Holy cow. Looked like it had been ransacked. Almost no ammo, even shotsells. I was there for black powder stuff, so I went over to the little ghetto corner they devote to it. Not a percussion cap to be found in #10 and #11 flavor. I grabbed the last four tins of 4 winged musket caps and a couple boxes of round balls. I wonder how they make money these days since there seems to be little for them to sell.

Newtosavage: besides those who are freaking out.and actually use the items---

----So many of the others are simply wanting to Increase the shortages, so that they can >> resell for a profit <<,
like the same group of guys (20-25 people: the Gun Manager told me) lined up on M-W-Fridays when Academy normally has ammo.

I'm Truly looking forward --so much-- to when the "anxiety/Flipper Bubble" finally deflates, leading to a downhill discounting race....
...and for Their  anxiety to inflate; call it Schadenfreude, or simply "that's how the market operates".

That's a pretty penny for Wolf 22. lr. $525 for 1500 rounds.

Last week my local Bi-Mart and 800 round packs of Federal 22. lr for $25 a pack. Glad I bought mine when I did. Whew!!

Typo? 800 rounds for $25, is $0.03125 per round, which was a good price pre-Sandy Hook!

I thought so too, but I asked the sporting goods manager, and said that's what it was going for. It didn't last long, just like every ammo delivery currently.
Perhaps it was an error on their part, but who am I to disagree with a price like that?

i swung by walmart this am as i was having my tires rotated nearby. found minimag cci 100 ct containers for $7.82. pre pandemic i think it was 7.70 or so. bought most of it but did leave a few. no bulk boxes which is what i prefer. last time i bought 22 was 2019. at least i am shooting it and not just stockpiling it. they had stingers as well which i didn't get.

I don't want to be the negative Nelly, but people should be scared about the ammo market correcting in the future. It does not take much observation to see that the dynamics in place after this election have never been seen in our lifetimes.

We should believe the people in charge (or who will be in charge) when they say that they are intent on restricting the ability to get ammunition. I think what we have seen is that people tend to do what they threaten to do, especially when they gain power.

The ammo restrictors will have power over most of the Federal Government in less than a week. Friendly states can resist for some period of time. It's not a conspiracy to just talk about what we are seeing. That is why I do not think that things will return to normal anytime soon, if ever. We have already been told that the election of an outsider "Will never happen again". I believe them.

My point for the thread is that it is not crazy to grab more ammo whenever you can find anything reasonable. I think a buyer is taking a huge risk by just waiting for the traditional bounce back. I think we are in risk management mode. The extra cost is like insurance for the ability to shoot in the future.

Just my two cents.

Jmorris: Exactly.

And perhaps only less than a dozen people (or extremely limited number), last spring/summer, were actually threatened in the yards or streets by their homes.

But millions act as if they could easily be in a battle such as Ramadi Iraq. Constant staring at videos of burning shops and looting seems to have programmed masses of people.

Don't get me wrong--it just seems that those urban areas, despite being a large number, should be kept within their own proper context.

This whole thing, the Covid, the ammo, the elections, the fake news, the riots on both side of the spectrum, all of it needs to have some perspective. The news media hype it all and the 24 hour news cycle pushes it, not to be political, to the point of fakery. Everyone, everywhere just needs to CTFD! I saw a billboard sign today on the way to the Y for my swim workout, Mr. Rogers, "will you be my friend" and we need to ask ourselves on the larger stage, how would our grandparents act, I imagine with a bit more decorum than I have seen over the last year or so. And, to be clear, I am not talking about folks on this forum, which by and large is very decorous :).

I think we will have ammo again, I sure hope so.

Was at Cabela's last week Win 9mm $15/bx, Herters .22lr $21/350
They also HAD 38sp, .357, 32acp and .380

5 box limit, it all went fast.
And I only bought 9mm, primers and powder.

Swords and spears, guys, swords and spears. Another suggestion is a flintlock muzzle loading rifle. Small caliber might be better than large overall. You can gather flint. You can gather or scavenge lead. You can learn to make your own black powder out of what nature gives you.

After even looking for myself....I am even more convinced, some online ammo sales websites are full on taking advantage of the newest crop of gun owners.
They might not realize they are getting ripped off. Simply because they are new shooters.

To them, a hundred rounds seems like a lot.

I have had many friends ask why they would possibly need a spare high capacity magazine....

There are a couple sites charging 1.60 a round for .22lr (CCI). They must have bought it all up and now reselling it. Unbelievable. Should be .03-.15 per round roughly depending on brand and intended purpose.

I think we will see another AWB, which we have already had, and let's face it, majorities support it. I think any move to restrict ammo especially down to the .22 level will cause a massive backlash at the polls.

We really don't have an ammo shortage, we just have higher prices. What the future holds for those prices who knows. The dream scenario for the left is for us to be like Europe, no 'assault rifles', no 'hi-cap clips', limits on ammo, tightly regulated handguns. They'll leave us our hunting rifles and shotguns, they think that's what the 2A is about.
