10mm coming back in style?

So, I've noticed in the last year or two, a lot more interest and factory ammo availability (well, up until the last 6 months when everything disappeared) in the 10mm Auto. Seems like more guns in production and more people looking for them.

So is this just a fluke in my perception, or is this round actually experiencing a resurgence in popularity lately? If so, what factors would you folks say are driving it?

I know it was the new hotness back in the 80s when the FBI started using it, before they realised that the extra oomph just made it harder for the average agent to use effectively, leading to a toned-down version, leading to the .40 S&W that duplicated the ballistics of the "mild ten" and fit better in smaller, lighter guns. And recently, it seems that the FBI has decided that, in the real world, caliber arguments don't play out to show that any of the common issue calibers has more inherent ability to stop the fight than any other, and so since shot placement is more important than caliber, then more capacity means better odds of a critical hit, and seems to be moving back to 9mm's.

Meantime, I've heard and read of more people looking for 10mm guns and ammo in the last couple years than i have in the previous 20. I have a friend that just bought a 10mm Glock for a "woods gun" (seemed an odd choice, but far be it from me to urinate in his whole-grain cereal).

Is it me? Or is some factor pushing the old 10 back out in the limelight again?
What is the best pistol for taming 10mm recoil?

Some guns seems to just soak it up.

I Personally like the Big Oh Glock M40 MOS, a lot of Mass in that big Slide. With reasonably Strong target ammo It is like shooting a 9MM. But I can shoot some hot loads without getting beat Up Bad either. Plus I have 2 LW barrels for Mine. A 9 inch barrel as well as a Threaded barrel That I can Run a Comp on. Both Barrels Suck up a LOT of recoil from the Gun. When I shoot the Threaded barrel with the Comp it is Very soft with my mid Range Target hand loads. The gun Just runs those cleanly and I don't have to run down casings all over the range LOL.

When the next mag capacity restriction comes, would new shooters want 10 rounds of 10mm, .40 or .45? or 10 rounds of something else? In 1995 (after the assault weapons ban) the shooters bought into the .40 and .45 in droves... We'll see what happens this time.

When I got my Delta Elite over 3 decades ago, it was bought expressly as my woods gun. Seemed I couldn't convince anybody else of that, though, back then. Shot mostly PMC's 170 gr HPs @1200fps and Winchester 175 gr STHPs @1250 fps out of it, as both were readily available anywhere, whereas Normas were scarce. It was these or my own reloads. Seems only in the last 10 or 15 years has the 10mm been truly recognized as a woods gun, something I thought it deserved from the start, but I put much of the lagging off to the revolver crowd, of whom many have hunted with their handguns since forever, and therefore don't really need to convince anybody. My Delta was replaced in the first decade of the 2000s, to keep it as pristine as it was, by a Glock 29, which now usually has 200 gr XTPs from DT in it.

I have both. Got the 15 rounders with my Glock 40MOS. bought the 10 rounders mainly for hunting. I even modified one of the 10 rounders down to 4 so as to meet Michigans hunting rules about hunting deer with a semi auto Rifle. Can't hold more that 5 including 1in chamber. I have a Meck Teck conversion Rifle. Really could care less as I think 10 rounds is more than enough to get the job done. And who just carries one mag anyway.

Bought my Glock 40MOS as all around Hunting and Just Pure Fun Gun. Got A lot of Goodies for it Too. It is my Pet Gun For Sure!!!

I bought my first 10mm close to 20 years ago. I've loaded every round of 10mm I've ever fired. Carried my 29 for years. Recently picked up a 20SF in new condition for $400. Only reason I can figure it was that price is that noone could find ammo for it. Put night sights on it last weekend.

Very Cool. If i seen one for that Price I would Buy It Too. I load all my own stuff Too.

pairof44sp, the Glocks are pretty good at soaking up recoil from the "real" 10MM ammo, as are the discontinued S&W series of 10MM pistols. The big S&W N-Frame 10MM revolvers also do a good job of moderating recoil from the warmer 10MM ammo.

Spot on, 10 rounds is more than enough unless you plan on missing a lot. For me I carry only the mag in the gun, and so far after some 30 years of teaching (other than my LEO students) I think I've had one or two students that carried a spare mag.

It's not coming back, it is back, 10mm is more popular today than it was in the 80s and early 90s and the ammo is comparable to .357 in price.

What remains to be seen tho is if mags over 10 rds go away again if the 10mm will too. The appeal of 10mm is the power to capacity is excellent, but make everything 10 rds and it's hard to argue that .45 isn't better in something smaller than a full size, which if a mag capacity limit passes, I'm not gonna bother with full size pistols that use 10 rd mags, I'll get a compact instead.

Never knew they were out of style. I had a G20 for close to 30 years. I did sell it recently when downsizing, but only because I find I like the smaller G29 a little better. It is just as accurate in my hands, is a bit easier to carry and still takes the G20 magazines holding 15 rounds if I need more than 10+1.

The hottest loads literally do anything a 357 mag revolver will do, and come closer to 44 mag than a lot of guys are willing to admit. Fire 44 mags from a revolver with the same overall length and you're down to a 3" barrel on the 44. From a 3" barrel 44 mag just isn't nearly as impressive as the published ballistics shown when fired from an 8" barrel.

Both my G20 and G29 fire 40 S&W rounds just fine. There is no difference in accuracy nor POI. I can't comment on how well other brands do that.

I started with G20's, the sold those for G40MOS and put a Burris Fast Fire 3moa dot on it for hunting. Then got a G29 for knocking around our 72acres. We have numerous bears etc and it makes me feel better. I like the 29 a lot. Carry both in a Alaskan chest holster. They both shoot .40 reliably as well.

Have the MeckTeck Conversion Rifle for my Glock 40MOS. Shoots Great But is heavy.
Do you feel it's worth having a 10mm carbine in the same mag config as your 10mm pistol? I've always been a proponent of doing this, but I've been thinking if I do get a 10 carbine I'm interested in the Hi Point and I'm not completely sure I'm going to keep my G40. Even if I did sell it and go with a different 10mm pistol, it's doubtful anybody is ever gonna make a carbine that takes anything but Glock mags, so it's kind of no matter what I'd choose, I'd have a 10mm pistol and carbine that uses different mags.
