Me too; and if the Model 760 is of early fifties vintage they came with stock dimensions more appropriate for irons (mine wears a Williams "FoolProof" aperture rear sight) than for scopes-excessive drop to the comb makes craning your neck necessary to find the optical image.

My '63 in .35 rem wears a Weaver base and Burris low Zee rings.
Scope is a Leupold 2-7X.
Stock is not high comb and it works fine.

If you’re just dead-set on a 4x or similar type bush/scout scope, you may have to look to Fleabay. Otherwise, hard to not find a decent quality 3x9 that will let you see well enough to hit a deer. Seems everyone has some version in stock, from numerous manufacturers. Good luck.

Not many options for quality fixed power scopes anymore. You'll get more scope for the money with a 3-9X40. You'll probably never take it off of 3X while hunting, but that's OK. Other options are a 2-7X32, or 1-4X20.

That is still true, but due to inflation decent quality now starts at $200.

These are about the least expensive I'd recommend.

Burris has discontinued their FF-II scope, but if you look around they can still be found. They sold for $200 when in production, but sometimes bargains are out there. If you can find one it is at least as good as the low end Leupold, maybe better. I've seen this sell for closer to $150 occasionally.

Stop at your LGS, often they'll pull the scope from a trade-in, and sell the glass separately. You can often get a used Leupold on the cheap and it has the same warranty and customer service.

I needed to upgrade the scope on my old Savage .270 Win. The salesman talked me into a Vortex Diamondback, 4x12x 40 for 200 bucks. A year later I liked it so well I bought another one for my .243 Win. Bright clear and a great warranty. hdbiker

My lower-priced go-to used to be Weaver's V1-4x, but Bushnell recently bought out Weaver and killed the brand. If you need warranty service on a recent Weaver scope, I understand they'll just swap one of the Bushnell line scopes.

Most of my other scopes are Leupold, Burris or Nikon. Nikon has often provided the best value for me, but I'm admittedly no optics connoisseur. I'll even admit that I put cheap Barska scopes on a couple of my .22s.

Usually I purchase new optics through Optics Planet or (gasp) Amazon.

I’ve had a Leupold M-8 4 power on my Ruger 77 since the early 80s. It’s a nice compact scope. I’ve hunted in some harsh environments for many years and it has been totally trouble free and has always held its zero even having been banged around quite a bit. I’ve made shots up close in the dense timber and as far as 300 yards and the straight 4 power has worked to perfection. My dad had a 760 for many years, my brother has it now and dad always used Weaver tip-off mounts with various scopes. I remember once when I was young dad had to use the tip-off to kill a buck when his scope had fogged up. I’m not sure any of these items are still available. The 760 is a fine rifle.

And for an inexpensive but nice scope, I like my Vortex CrossfireII. They work well for me at a good value. They also make a 2-7x 32 I’ve been looking at that should be nice for one of these.

If you are not dead set on sticking with "old school" optics, consider putting a Prism Scope on it. Would make a wonderful woods gun. Many are out of stock today, but it might be a great fit for your ought-six...

Another good option is the Cabelas AR line. I was told they are made by Vortex and have an excellent service record.

I have an older Remington 760 in '06 that has put up a lot of meat over the years. It wears an El Paos Weaver K6W that works great and looks good on it.
E bay is about the only place to find one now. Just a plain cross hair is all I want, can't stand the BDC scopes.

Doesn't that rifle have iron sights?

I just put a Leupold VX3i 1.5 - 5 x on a little bolt action sporter this weekend. Very trim, and it worked well for me at the 100 & 200 yard range.

I have a early 1970's/late 60's 760 in .270. I put a Leupold Freedom 2-7 in Warne QD rings in case I follow a animal in a thick cedar thicket and shots will be under 25yds and fast. I think for a 760 platform this is a good power range. Not hunting squirrels with it.

I have a vintage K4 on it that makes me appreciate modern scopes on my 308 Winchester 760. I will swap it out for a Leupold 3x9 at some point..

Back when I was growing up Re. 742s and 760s were everywhere. Most I saw either had a 3-9x or 4x scope of the Weaver or Redfield brand. And a lot of stupid sight through rings (yeah I had them).

If I was doing it again I would have a low power variable (1x-5x) of a reputable brand (Leopold, Meopta, etc..).

The Leupold VX-Freedom 2-7x would probably be my choice. The magnification range is a good match I feel.

I've used a number of similar priced scopes, and I don't think you'll find anything with better glass, adjustments, lens coatings, and overall size/weight anywhere near its price range. It's a real nice package for a hunting rifle. At $200 it's practically a no-brainer.

That's what I put on my 760 .270. Very satisfied

I would go for a 3-9x 40 Leupold. They are rugged lifetime scopes. I do have Weaver Grand Slam on My Tikka, The last scopes I bought were a Burris and Leupold. The choices have narrowed down lately.
