Bought a couple of boxes of this 9MM ammo today.

I've shot a lot of Hornady ammo, but never this. Is it decent ammo ?

Price was high, but I'm really low on 9mm S/D ammo, and was glad to get it. About $1.08 per round.

I last bought 9mm at Bass Pro last Tuesday, $64.95 per 200 rounds of WWB, and there was a good stock left after the line died down. You have to get there the morning the truck comes in, and in Colorado Springs, that seems to be Tuesdays. They also had 380 at $49.95 per 100 rounds.

WOW!! That is expensive!!
I have shot the American Gunner ammo before. I have several boxes in 380, 9mm, and 45acp,
It's good ammo just lower on the Hornady price scale?

Yep. It really was.

Thanks. I live pretty close to one. I will check that out.

I think the Hornady stuff is sort of under rated. I rarely see it mentioned in the top SD ammo contenders. It is reliable and expands reliably. Their Critical Defense and Critical Duty stuff I think is fantastic. I think most of their stuff is. It was, keyword "was", significantly cheaper than the HST and GD's.

I admit to being a pistol ammo snob pre COVID. Hornady and Speer for my carry guns, CCI Brass and Winchester White Box for the range. Haven't seen any Hornady or Speer in 9 months and very little of anything else. Because of cost and availability my range time is almost non existent and all of the decent carry and range ammo I have is rationed. Around here, south central Texas, I see quite a bit of Wolfe brand steel but at 75 - 80 cents a round I'll pass on that for now.

Most of the Hornady stuff I saw pre-C19 was $15-$16 per 20. Critical line was a few dollars more and gold dots and HST's were $30-$35. Although, and I can't believe I didn't take advantage of it at the time every once in a while targetsports would sell 50rd box of HST or GD for $29.99 regular price being $39.99. Considerably less than the usual $1/rd. I should have bought a case. As it is now I have about a lil over half a case of 9mm JHP and it isn't all premium stuff, WWB 147gr JHP that was $21/50rd (pretty good deal) and Walmart had the 124gr Golden Saber for $13/20rd, also a good deal. Everything else I have is hydroshocks, critical duty. XTP's. I should have bought 500rds of each gold dots and HST's when they were so cheap. When I appeal to my more rational side I know I have more JHP's than any person is likely to ever need but collecting is part of the fun too I guess. Having the good stuff.

Seems like a good price to me. Premium SD Ammo from a reputable company and a proven projectile was always $20-27 / 25 where I’m at.

Not sure I would call XTPs THE BEST, but I wouldn't hesitate to carry them, especially in 124 gr., if I didn't have any HSTs or GoldDots on my shelves. Good rounds at a (currently) decent price.

I have the American Gunner in 38+p and 357mag. Seems to be good stuff. I noticed they use brass (not nickel plated) cases, and the XTP as opposed to the FTX projectIles, but otherwise good SD ammo.

I got a steal on some Gold Dots in the summer of 2019. Less than $20/box. I had them all loaded in tan colored glock mags. One of the last things I did with my best friend before he died this past fall was go shooting at the range, we did alot of shooting that weekend and I specifically told him not to shoot any tan mags because they were loaded with premium JHP.

I don't know how he confused it but sure enough I look into my range bag and didn't see my carry mags, went up to him where he was shooting, two empty tan mags on the ground and a tan mag in the gun with the slide locked back. Lol. I can laugh about it now but I was fuming. Lol. I said well that was a pretty expensive 30 seconds of shooting.

That's a beautiful thing. Love the pic.

Just dried out 1200 rounds of 9mm brass! I swore up and down years ago that I would never reload 9mm because it was not cost efficient. And here I am!

And to the OP, it's apparently not too expensive for "you." If it's too expensive you don't buy it! These days, anything not FMJ in 9mm would be considered decent SD ammo if it's all you can get. HST and Ranger T are my go to self defense handgun rounds. I have plenty. I put Gold Dots in a close third place!

I have a few cases of the 9mm Ranger T series. I think I could retire if I sold them!

That's not a bad price for what it is right now. The last 9mm I saw was $35 for 50 rounds of 115 gr FMJ.

I've run American Gunner in .380, .38 Spl and 9mm. Zero problems. It's quite decent ammo. And that XTP loading is a pretty well established bullet design. As someone else said, I might grab HSTs or Gold Dots first, but I wouldn't feel bad about XTPs in my carry guns.
Hornady, btw, is nearly always a decent bet.

Yeah I actually have some bonded ranger I got for a steal, I believe it's Q4364. The RA9T isn't bonded is it, the T series? I know one of them had a massive recall. I don't keep any of it loaded, I test fired a few and they work but I couldn't carry them knowing they could have bad primers or whatever. I just store them away. Check your lots maybe just to be sure you don't have the dud stuff people were complaining of...

I use the 115 gr load for carry. I used to buy American Gunner all of the time when it was $16.99 a box. I don't even see it on the shelf anymore.
It's reboxed Hornady Custom from everything I've ever read about it.
