The patch of woods is essentially a small canyon with a spring fed creek in the middle. There are several small cave openings in the hillside just across the creekbed. It’s a really peaceful place, and it is home to some endangered native flowers. In the winter, it stays a few degrees warmer than most areas and in summer a few degrees cooler because of all the 60 degree air that rolls out of the cave constantly. There are salamanders, skinks, lots of birds, a bumper crop of squirrels, and now there is a beautiful redhead living in the cave. She’s an older gal from what I can tell through binoculars and she is quite large. She has clearly lived around humans a lot as she knows to be aware but not worried with cars moving and stuff going on, she seems to understand that she is perfectly safe in my small patch of woods. I hope she has a litter of babies this year, and I hope she stays around. Maybe she can thin out the rabbits and squirrels. I will try to get better photos of her. She seems content to stay put with me at around 40-50 yards. I tried to get a better photo this morning but the good camera was dead... so all I got was crappy cell phone pics.

We had a vixen raise a litter of Cubs near our house one spring. They were fun to watch playing outside the den.
Time to buy a new trailcam. Not too close though or she'll move. I learned that the hard way,

Such pretty animals. We had a family with four kits living in the culvert under the road by the cabin. The kits would come out to play in the mornings and early evenings. Once they got grown we hardly ever saw them again. Had one(don't know if it was mom, dad or one of the youngin's) trot by me during deer season last fall. First time in my life I didn't try to get a shot.

Very cool. I agree with Armored Farmer that it's time to put a trail cam out there. Got a few around here in the woods next to me. I have a few trail cams out and get plenty of fox pictures. Except most are in the middle of the night when they are out & about the most.

She has been out and about more today. Seems odd to be out and about during the day, but it seems like she is a bit protective of the cave entrances. I hope that means that she has pups in the cave. I got some better pictures, but I don’t have a way to pull them off of the memory card until I get back to my laptop on Monday. Now i need to get the neighbors to leave her alone. Some want to walk a bit close to her cave without realizing what they are doing. They ran her out into the field today and she acted like she wanted to lure them away. As soon as they left she came back on a mission to get into the cave. Her behavior really makes me think she either has pups there already, or has decided that she wants to use that cave to raise the pups she is about to have.

She is the first red fox I have seen on this property. Before her I had seen a couple different gray foxes.

Red fox were introduced down here by fox hunters. They are not native. They compete with our native gray fox and probably put a damper on their growth. However, the all-knowing FWC has made all foxes off-limits to kill. They say it's because we would be overrun with rabbits if we killed any foxes. They must be doing a good job because I live on 60 acres and only see a rabbit about twice a year. However, they allow bobcats to be hunted as well as coyotes.
Between hawks, eagles, foxes, owls, bobcats, coyotes, and rattlesnakes it's a wonder there are any rabbits at all.

PS: Fox hunters are not allowed to kill foxes. They can only let their dogs chase them while they sit on their tailgates and drink beer.

Here are my "redheads".

A few towns over from me they do Fox hunts, so the Fox population is high. Never see grays at all anymore, I'd love to have a nice for mount. That coffee table is great rembrandt

Beautiful fox and land to boot!

I have only seen one red fox that wasn't in permanently frozen in position, it was as the wife and I were driving along a coastal road in Maine just South/East of Portland on the way to Bailey Island. It popped out onto the asphalt, stood still for about half a second then jumped back into the thicket. I stopped but we never saw it again.

All we get at home here are rangy coyotes that eat the neighborhood cats and regularly leave scat on my hillside path... :( I'd love to live far enough outside of town where I could thin some of those a-holes out with one of my .22 WMR.

Keep us updated on how she does!

Stay safe.

Momma fox has a litter of 6! They have finally came out of the cave and started playing. They look to be about a month or so old, maybe a bit more. This field is adjacent to my woods. The sinkhole is clearly connected to my caves as it is only about 30 yards away. They have been sunbathing, playing, fighting, and what seems like it may be daddy fox apparently took down a neighborhood cat. I still need to get a trail camera out but I’m afraid to get too close to the den and there aren’t any good spots up near my house. There are good spots on the other side of the creek but it’s too steep to get to them without coming right through the den area. The pics are terrible on here... sorry.

Ultra cool ! Thanks for the pix. When the young ones start growing and exploring you may see them more. Friend of mine sometimes saw them sit at the edge of a woods watching him as he went by on the tractor. They are still young, dumb, and curious and are easier to see. I've seen them out playing and in 2016 I had some in the woods next to me that occasionally played like a couple of puppies. Managed some crummy shots holding the camera lens up to the spotting scope eyepiece.

I caught one in my skunk trap last year (live trap). I let him out, he took about 10 steps and stood there looking at me, I chased him down the driveway and he just stayed a few step ahead. When I stopped, he stopped and just looked at me. Brave little guy.

Interesting thread....... Sitting here in viral hermitage got me to poke around and find some of my other trail cam fox pix that are here on the computer. Once in a great while I get a decent daylight one. Seems like 98% are taken at night . But once in a great while one shows up in daylight......Here's one that was taken back in 2016...

Question for any one who knows. Can they be domesticated. When THR slows I visit Reddit. One category I use is animals/ pets. There are RedFox photos there on a semi regular basis.

The fox family continues to grow and they seem to be healthy for now. They are getting their eviction notice though. I hate to do it, but 2 adult foxes and 6 babies is taking a toll on the neighbors cats, chickens, etc. the general concensus for everybody else in the neighborhood aside from me and my next door neighbor is that the momma fox needs shot. I’m trying to prevent that, and have put in a call to the TWRA in hopes that they will come and trap the whole family and relocate them to a less urban area. I’m also concerned that people are trying to poison them as we have come across a couple chicken legs that have obviously been left to be found. I have had to take one away from each of my dogs.

As a young man I used to trap fox, back then at 65 bucks apiece it was good money. Now days I save meat scraps and feed them at my place of business. I'm kind of ashamed now of all the fox I killed. They are beautiful animals.whughett, I've been around a "domesticated" fox. One minute he would let you pet him the next he would bite you:) I'm not sure you ever get all the"wild" out of them.

Couple years ago I had a trailcam set next to a woodchuck hole. Not only got some close up 'chuck pix but I got some of the young fox pups that were out and about exploring the area. Here's one of them that stopped and was looking down the 'chuck hole........ WGI_0128.JPG .

Thread revival time - Remembered this thread the other day when I saw a fox leap from the edge of the woods at some birds on the ground beneath our bird feeder, (he didn't get any), and hung around for 20 seconds or so. Which was long enough for me to grab the Canon Rebel and get a few telephoto shots of him before he vanished into the snowy woods. IMG_0620.JPG .... IMG_0621.JPG ... This is a rough time of year for foxes, or just about any critter. In winter I rarely see them except on night time trail cam pictures.

I don't know if they can be domesticated or not but we used to have one come into our gazebo at work and beg for food at break time.
Didn't seem to be afraid of us at all, but people were feeding it so.
He had a front leg missing, probably caught in a leg hold trap at one time and chewed it off.

Ours we call Opie. We think it’s a male and the name came from the Andy Griffith Show. We see him a lot, and have some great photos of him but my wife lost the card reader for her MacBook and we don’t have a good way to move pics off of the camera to a usable place. In fact he is out sunning himself right now but I suspect he will be in his cave in a bit. It’s starting to get nasty out and he will go in.

Nice kittens? 1C5B3E5C-6AAC-4CC7-B623-1602ABBC249B.jpeg They were having so much fun with a young red squirrel
